OpenData.OpenMinds.033016

Open Data / Open Minds is a prototyping project that explores ways that paper, electronics, data-literacy and connectivity -- for workbooks, for communities -- can bring together new opportunities for interdisplinary teaching and learning. We are working on a pilot offering for the Letters to the Next President initiative, L2P2.0, as a potential engagement platform.

This presentation was shared with lead educators, program directors and researchers on March 30, 2016 at the National Writing Project.

Paper as Interface and the Undeniable Appeal of the Coughing Panda Jeannine Huffman, adjunct faculty at Teachers College of San Joaquin, STEM and Design Instructor, and dedicated notebook hacker, is working with Dr. Sherry Hsi on a servo project for the Hack Your Notebook series. The goal: actuate a small, low-cost servo causing the panda to move based on air quality levels in Shenzen, China. Find Jeannine @HuffmanJeannine and visit her Weebly site, http://jeanninehuffman.weebly.com/ , for more information on her work with notebooks, paper and electronics. @HuffmanJeannine

  18. 18. •  Middle school students are interested in asking the new president to protect wildlife. They decide to make a menagerie of animals affected by different human actions: a coughing panda, etc. •  A museum leads an event in Golden Gate Park in which people use their Bookmark displays to tell a story about themselves. All of the pieces are brought together to make a community art project.  •  High school students decide to give the President a "letter" that displays how their generation is feeling based the changes in Instagram hashtags. •  As part of Hour of Code a museum offers a half day workshop in which visitors create data visualizations with preloaded datasets that they can then take home. The workshop is designed so that the visualization project teaches you enough about the tool that you can do more with it once you get it home. •  Middle school students carry counters and will count every time they witness or are a victim of bullying. These can be compared to national statistics, across school or classes. Program is taught between Health, Math, and English. •  Upper elementary students use accelerometers to track their movement on the playground and then create displays with it. Taught between Computer or STEM Lab and Gym. •  Middle school students are interested in asking the new president to protect wildlife. They count the number of different wildlife in their town. They create a visualization of where in the town the wildlife is located and use it to find land that should be preserved.
