The Confidence Gap: Igniting Brilliance through Feminine Leadership - Voices 2015

Editor's Notes

  1. MY Story…When talents or gifts collide with our burdened or trauma – calling / purpose emerges. Courage is your foundation, Passion is your momentum. Have you ever had an idea, thought, or suggestion….? Peer learning, we are meant to teach we learn and heal. The confidence gap between men and women, why it exists and how courage and passion are foundational to building confidence. Confidence combined with inspired action allows us to live our dreams and play big for not only our own happiness, but creates impact and serves the greater good. Feminine leadership is both an opportunity and responsibility for the western woman. Unity, women bonding together in a sisterhood to create a tidal wave of change to heal, evolve and transform the world.
  2. Self compassion, self affirming. “The Confidence Code” – confidence assessment. Half a dozen studies have found that companies employing women in large numbers out perform their competitors on every measure of profitability. Our COMPETENCE has never been more clear, we earn 60-65% of bachelors and masters degrees, we are ½ of the workforce and closing the gap on middle management. Success is the result of confidence, just as much as competence. 2011 leadership study in the UK, ½ females reported self doubt, yet les than 1/3 of males reported self-doubt. In studies, men overestimate their ABILITIES and PERFORMANCE, and women underestimate both. But their performances do not differ in quality. A study done at HP to try and figure out how to get more women into top management positions – what they found women applied for a promotion only when they believed they met 100% of qualifications listed for the job, men were happy to apply when they thought they met 60% of job requirements. Women feel confident only when they are perfect. Perfectionism is a confidence killer… it is about seeking approval. Being liked over being heard. If life were one long grade school, women would be the undisputed rulers of the world. We got a lot of praise for being perfect and we began to crave the approval we got for being good. Risk taking, failure and perseverance are essential to building confidence. Passion…think of a baby learning walk… Confidence and action are interrelated…when we hesitate because we aren’t sure, we hold ourselves back. Stop thinking and analyzing and just act. We are hard on ourselves, we over think it instead of taking action, we want to be liked over being heard, we don’t celebrate our wins enough, we focus on where we lack. So men hold back sometimes, of course, but they don’t let self doubt stop them as often as women do. MEN ASK FOR WHAT THEY WANT!
  3. Courage is your foundation to building confidence, it’s a muscle that must be exercised to grow. Passion and Purpose are your fuel. Vulnerability is how you truly connect and foster creativity and innovation. You can’t be armored up, on guard, or afraid of failure or making a mistake if you want to play big, create big. Vulnerability is the birthplace of creativity, it takes courage. (patience, integrity, kindness, etc.) You are an emerging woman – here to emerge and align with your purpose, to live the truth of who you are. There is a unique gift, within each of you that will allow you to live with your whole heart, from your truth to lead by example, pave the way, and leave a legacy. The emerging women is a FEMINISTA! Its about Beauty, Sensuality, and bonding together in Sisterhood is how we will create a tidal wave of change to restore balance and healing in the world. That is your opportunity and responsibility! It’s everyone’s job. Ignite your brilliance…, the emergence of your own very unique and important gift, no matter how small or how large in scope, it is in you and waiting for permission to emerge. The world needs your gift. Acting in the face of self doubt – overcoming with courage; CALF When anxious or in self doubt, remind yourself of what you appreciate about you.
  4. Corpus collosum In a study of Top 10 Critical Components of Global Leadership, women scored above men on 7 of the 10 traits, equally on 2 of 10, and men outscored women on only one – “Envisioning”. (The Global Executive Leadership Inventory (GELI) is a 360-degree feedback instrument developed at Insead's Global Leadership Center by Manfred Kets de Vries, Pierre Vrignaud and Elizabeth Florent-Treacy) Women earn more than 65% of all degrees. Yet, women make up only – 14% of executive roles, 17% of board seats, 17% of elected officials; and 7.5% of top earners.
  5. We don’t have 300 years to heal and transform the world.
  6. A recent analysis by Fortune revealed that Fortune 1000 companies with female CEOs earn higher stock market returns than those with male CEOs. There was a recent study done through corporate HR departments, that uncovered an astonishing fact about 360 performance reviews of employees. • 75% of women received reviews that included a personality criticism • 2% of men received a personality criticism Catalyst, a research organization, found that the companies with the most women board directors earned a 26% higher return on invested capital than companies with the least women.  McKinsey & Co. found that the international companies with more women on their corporate boards far outperformed the average company in return on equity and other measures. Operating profit was 56% higher.  Overall research suggest that companies are more successful when they promote more women to senior jobs.  Kindergarten study Corpus Colossus
  7. Don’t chase success for happiness, chase happiness for success!
  8. We each have a seed of an idea that will help heal and change the world! As western women we are privileged and empowered, but we have to claim it! We have to take a front seat, stand in your power, be willing to be heard over being liked or keeping peace… feel the fear and saddle up anyway. You have a calling – it is in you, Where do you find it? It is whatever you are resisting, it is what you fear, it is where you play small, it is what has caused you the most pain, it’s where you flow, and it’s your personal assignment in the world. You bring it out by being still, getting strong, and willingness to take risk, and you know in your core that true success is so much greater than any failure you could experience along the way. The bottom line profit of a company can no longer be the sole focus when it comes at the expense of the sustainability of the planet, true success means everyone wins.
  9. 3 C’s to STOP: compare, criticize, compete 3 C’s to START: developing clarity, courage, and confidence to play big Let go of: Perfectionism, Seeking Approval, and Sacrificing your voice Celebrate your wins, own them, claim and affirm your value, talents, and gifts. Focus on what you bring, not where you lack. What you put your attention on grows. A truly successful leader wants to lift you into the light where they reside. They operate from a place of integrity and support and encourage other to on their path.
  10. Many women focus on proving competence and seeking perfection, instead of taking action and selling their vision. It is a confidence problem. There is no such thing as perfection and there’s no way to grow and learn without risking failure. Thinking and planning without action is a sort of analysis paralysis. Creativity happens thru planning, but following up with action and implementation. This requires vulnerability, because you might make a mistake or look foolish. There can be no real change, creativity, or innovation without stepping into the risk of failure. Getting out of your comfort zone by having the willingness to be vulnerable is how to learn, grow and succeed.
  11. Support yourself, believe in your voice and ideas, stand in your power. Your worth comes from within you, not outside of you. What is waking up in you… is to self actualize your creativity that impacts others in service to something bigger than you. Remember what you appreciate about yourself when feeling self-doubt. Story: Engineering organization. Your core strength, your authentic self, is always your greatest place of strength. Your passion always leads to your purpose. Where do you find it? Its where you flow, its where you get in your zone, it’s what has caused you the most pain, what you lose all sense of time doing, it is where you have invested thousands of hours thinking about, it is what you are resisting, it is what keeps persisting, it is what exhilarates you and brings up your fear. Own your value, claim it, commit to it. Saying it out loud affirms. Toot your own horn, it is not bragging, if it is shared to inspire others in how you accomplish and create.
  13. Emotional intelligence, you cant be open to some and not all, no sensor. There is no amount of money, technology or strategy that can equal the a group of passionate people brainstorming new ideas.
  14. Persuasive presentations Vulnerability for Creativity & Innovation Balance = Gender & generational diversity Confidence, taking risks Authenticity / Transparency Envisioning
