    3. 3. Outline • Lev 10:1 Nadab and Abihu’s strange fire • Lev 11:1 Clean and Unclean Food
    4. 4. Let’s read Leviticus 10
    5. 5. Leviticus 10:1, Nadab And Abihu Offered Strange Fire • Leviticus 10:1 Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took their respective firepans, and after putting fire in them, placed incense on it and offered strange fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them. • “their respective firepans” equipment is right • “incense” is Biblical (referred to 24X’s so far in Bible) • “fire” is Biblical (referred to about 42X’s so far in Leviticus) • The problem “He had not commanded them” • They were “close but no cigar” (broad path)
    6. 6. Leviticus 10:1, Nadab And Abihu Offered Strange Fire
    7. 7. Leviticus 10:1, Nadab And Abihu Offered Strange Fire • Leviticus 10:1 …after putting fire in them, …and offered strange fire … • Some think the “fire” were supposed to use was the eternal fire which in Leviticus 9:24… “came out from before the LORD…” • The ESV CSB …unauthorized fire… • The NKJ …profane fire… • LXX in Greek; “fire, pur” and “allotrios” [GING] ἀλλότριος ἀλλότριος, ία, ιον belonging to another, strange, foreign Lk 16:12; Ac 7:6; 2 Cor 10:15; Hb 11:9. ἀλλοτρίοισ ἐπίςκοποσ meddling in other people's affairs 1 Pt 4:15 v.l. Hostile, enemy Hb 11:34. [pg 9]
    8. 8. Leviticus 10:2, Fire From The Presence Of The LORD • Leviticus 10:2 And fire came out from the presence of the LORD [panim] and consumed them, and they died before the LORD. • Before the presence [panim] of the LORD • These 2 had been highly privileged, Even Mt. Sinai. • Exodus 24:1 Then He said to Moses, "Come up to the LORD, you and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu and seventy of the elders of Israel, and you shall worship at a distance.
    9. 9. Leviticus 10:3, Holy • Leviticus 10:3 Then Moses said to Aaron, "It is what the LORD spoke, saying, 'By those who come near Me I will be treated as holy, And before all the people I will be honored.'" So Aaron, therefore, kept silent. • Leviticus is about all “holiness,” and approaching an infinitely “Holy” God!

    12. 12. Leviticus 10:5, Still In Their Tunics • Leviticus 10:5 So they came forward and carried them still in their tunics to the outside of the camp, as Moses had said. • Daniel 3:21 Then these men were tied up in their trousers, their coats, their caps and their other clothes, and were cast into the midst of the furnace of blazing fire…. • 27 … saw in regard to these men that the fire had no effect on the bodies of these men nor was the hair of their head singed, nor were their trousers damaged, nor had the smell of fire even come upon them.
    13. 13. Leviticus 10:6, Don’t Mourn! • Leviticus 10:6 Then Moses said to Aaron and to his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, "Do not uncover your heads nor tear your clothes, so that you will not die … the burning which the LORD has brought about. • God did it, and it’s serious! • NET Leviticus 10:6 …"Do not dishevel the hair of your heads… • Ezekiel 24:16 "Son of man, behold, I am about to take from you the desire of your eyes with a blow; but you shall not mourn and you shall not weep, and your tears shall not come.
    14. 14. Leviticus 10:9, Were They Drunk? • Leviticus 10:9 "Do not drink wine or strong drink, neither you nor your sons with you, when you come into the tent of meeting, so that you will not die-- it is a perpetual statute throughout your generations— • Some think that they were drunk, possibly celebrating the 8 days of “ordination,” when they offered strange fire. • Many spiritual highs end in disaster. • Christians can never get drunk and, many think that we should not drink any alcohol while “on duty.”
    15. 15. Leviticus 10:10, Clean Or Unclean • Leviticus 10:10 and so as to make a distinction between the holy and the profane, and between the unclean and the clean, • The Jews, and we also must distinguish this… • 1st customer: . . . I'll have tea. 2nd customer: . . . Me, too. And be sure the glass is clean! (The waiter exits, and then returns after a while.) • Waiter: . . . Two teas. Which one asked for the clean glass?
    16. 16. Leviticus 10:10, Holy Or Profane • Leviticus 10:10 …make a distinction between the holy [qodesh ] and the profane [common use(1), ordinary(2), profane(8)] … • <06944> qodesh … Meaning: apartness, sacredness… • Usage: consecrated(2), consecrated thing(1), consecrated things(2), dedicated(1), dedicated gifts(2), dedicated things(5), holiness(9), Holy(6), holy(263), holies(6), holy ones(1), holy portion(3), holy thing(2), holy things(12), most holy(25), most holy place(6), most holy things(6), sacred(2), sacred gifts(2), sacred things(3), sacrifices(1), sacrificial(1), sanctuary(65), set apart(1), thing most holy(2), things that are most holy(1), things dedicated(1). • Notes: a Lev 11:47; Lev 20:25; Eze 22:26
    17. 17. Central Theme Of Leviticus • Leviticus uses the word “holy” more times than any other NAS Bible book (76 X’s), 1/3 more than 2nd. Place Isaiah (53 X’s, but 2X’s chapters, 1/3 more verses). • Leviticus 11:44 'For I am the LORD your God. Consecrate[qadash …to be set apart or consecrated ] yourselves therefore, and be holy[qadosh , sacred, holy] , for I am holy…
    18. 18. Leviticus 10:11 torah= teach • Leviticus 10:11 and so as to teach the sons of Israel all the statutes which the LORD has spoken to them through Moses.“
    19. 19. Leviticus 10:11, torah= teach • Leviticus 10:11 and so as to teach [yara] the sons of Israel all the statutes which the LORD has spoken to them through Moses.” • Yara is the root of torah • <03384> yarah or yara (434d) • Meaning: to throw, shoot… • Usage: archers(2), archers shot(1), archers*(2), cast(3), cast them down(1), directed(1), instruct(4), instructed(1), instruction(1), instructs(1), laid(1), point(1), points(1), rain(1), set(1), shoot(10), shot(3), shot through(1), showed(1), taught(3), teach(27), teacher(2), teaches(2), teaching(1), throws(1), watering(1). • Notes: a Deu 17:10, Deu 17:11; Deu 33:10

(or Tanakh) • All Jewish law (Bible and Talmud) • Torah can include all the oral teachings or traditions of the rabbis • Some Jews refer to, "Torah that is written, and…Torah that is spoken“ Wikipedia
    21. 21. Torah • http://en.wikipe dia.org/wiki/Tora h
    22. 22. Torah, Strong’s • <08451> torah (435d) • Meaning: direction, instruction, law • Origin: from 3384 • Usage: custom(1), instruction(10), instructions(1), Law(1), law(188), laws(10), ruling(1), teaching(7), teachings(1).
    23. 23. “Torah”, I.S.B.E • “1. Torah ("Law"): “ Heb: Torah is from Heb: horah, the Hiphil of Heb: yarah. The root meaning is "to throw"; hence, in Hiphil the word means "to point out" (as by throwing out the hand), and so "to direct"; and Heb: torah is "direction." Heb: Torah may be simply "human direction," as the "law of thy mother" in Prov 1:8; but most often in the Old Testament it is the Divine law. In the singular it often means a law, the plural being used in the same sense; but more frequently Heb: torah in the singular is the general body of Divinely given law. The word tells nothing as to the way in which the Law, or any part of it, was first given; it simply points out the general purpose of the Law, namely, that it was for the guidance of God's people in the various matters to which it relates….”
    24. 24. Torah • The Hebrew word Torah may be referring to human direction, teaching, instruction, or Divine, either written or oral.
    25. 25. What does Torah mean in Hebrew? (An insight from Dr. Eli) • Leviticus 11:46 This is the law [torah] regarding the animal and the bird, and every living thing that moves in the waters and everything that swarms on the earth, • What does Torah mean in Hebrew? (An insight from Dr. Eli) • The word “Torah” most often refers to the Five Books of Moses. Although the Torah contains many stories, such as those of Cain and Abel, the Exodus from Egypt, as well as the story of Abraham’s life, it also contains various laws, statutes and commandments. • But what does Torah actually mean in Hebrew? • Simply put the word “Torah” means teaching, instruction and even direction. The root of the word comes from the verb LiR’ot, which illustrates the idea of hitting a target while throwing/shooting something. • Yours, Dr. Eli, Eli.Lizorkin@eteachergroup.com
    26. 26. Leviticus 10:12, Eleazar and Ithamar • Leviticus 10:12 Then Moses spoke to Aaron, and to his surviving sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, "Take the grain offering that is left over from the LORD'S offerings by fire and eat it unleavened beside the altar, for it is most holy. • The real “Survivors” • Exodus 6:23, 28:1,

    28. 28. Let’s read Leviticus 11:1-23
    29. 29. Ritual Purity in Israel, The Archaeological Study Bible • The Archaeological Study Bible on page 166 says; "Israel's purity laws (Lev 11–15), the details of which are unparalleled in any other ancient near Eastern literature, reminded the Israelites of the gaping divide between themselves and their holy God (cf. 10:3) and of God's burning desire for them to become like him in purity (11:44–45; 19:1–2; cf. Jesus’ words in Matthew 5:48). These laws also taught the Israelites that there uncleanness resulted not from demonic powers, as was widely believed in the broader world around them, but from disobedience to God's law. Even more fundamentally, uncleanness or ritual impurity (the condition that barred an individual from God's presence in the sanctuary) was a state that occurred in all people from time to time, simply by virtue of their human nature (cf. Lev12; 15).”
    30. 30. Central Theme Of Leviticus • Lev. uses the word “uncleanness” more times than any other NAS book (9 X’s). • Lev. uses the word “unclean” more times than any other NAS book (85 X’s), 4X’s more than 2nd. place Numbers (19 X’s, but 2X’s chapters, 1/3 more verses). • Lev. uses the word “clean” more times than any other NAS book (39 X’s). • Problem= How can sinful man approach a Holy God? • Solution= Sacrifices that look toward Christ • Chapters 1-7 are the offerings, 5 voluntary then 2 required
    31. 31. Let’s read Leviticus 11:24-47
    32. 32. Why Did God Make These Distinctions Between Clean And Unclean Foods? • Some think that God was arbitrarily testing the Israelites. This would be to test their obedience. • Some think there was a pagan association with eating the unclean animals which God did not want. • Some think it's all a large allegory. That somehow certain animals represented bad characteristics like gluttony or dirtiness. • Many think that God did it for hygienic reasons, that before the advent of antibiotics and other modern medicines, people were better off to avoid the unclean animals. • KJV Exodus 19:5 …if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people…
    33. 33. Why Did God Make These Distinctions Between Clean And Unclean Foods? • KJV Exodus 19:5 …if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar [KJV’ism] treasure unto me above all people… • KJV Deuteronomy 14:2 For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God, and the LORD hath chosen thee to be a peculiar people unto himself, above all the nations that are upon the earth. • Deuteronomy 26:18, Psalm 135:4, 1 Peter 2:9
    34. 34. Why Did God Make These Distinctions Between Clean And Unclean Foods? • Exodus 19:6 and you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words that you shall speak to the sons of Israel.“ • Obedient, unique, separate, distinct, holy, consecrated, apart from the nations to be in His presence, to receive His Word, Messiah, etc. • Romans 3:1 Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the benefit of circumcision? 2 Great in every respect. First of all, that they were entrusted with the oracles of God.
    35. 35. Clean And Unclean Creatures
    36. 36. Clean And Unclean Creatures
    37. 37. Good News For You Lobster/Catfish Eaters • Genesis 9:3 "Every moving thing that is alive shall be food for you; I give all to you, as I gave the green plant.
    38. 38. Good News For You Lobster/Catfish Eaters Acts 10:9 …Peter went up on the housetop …fell into a trance; 11 and he saw the sky opened up, and an object like a great sheet coming down, lowered by four corners to the ground, 12 and there were in it all kinds of four-footed animals and crawling creatures of the earth and birds of the air. 13 A voice came to him, "Get up, Peter, kill and eat!" 14 But Peter said, "By no means, Lord, for I have never eaten anything unholy and unclean." 15 Again a voice came to him a second time, "What God has cleansed, no longer consider unholy."
