BIBLE IN FIVE Pastor Dave Kooyers Valley Bible Fellowship Box 433 Boonville CA 95415 http://www.slideshare.net/dkooyers www.ValleyBibleFellowship.org (707) 895-2325 God bless you as you examine His Word, Your servant in Christ, 2Cor. 4:5, Dave Matthew 10:8 …Freely you received, freely give. These Microsoft PowerPoint presentations are provided "for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ" (Ephesians 4:12-15). To help Christians to "to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ." So that "we are no longer...tossed here and there...by every wind of doctrine." They may be downloaded and modified free of charge.
    3. 3. Acts Big Picture • Chapters 1-12; Records the first 12 years of church history. As it grows from Jerusalem to Antioch. This is the history of the ministry of Peter as he planted and then spread the church among the Jews. • Chaps. 13-21, Records the missionary journeys, giving the history of the expansion and planting of the church among the Gentiles by Paul. • Chaps. 21-28, Records Paul's arrest and trip Rome, and the events which led to this.
    4. 4. Acts 3:1-5, • Acts 3:1-5 One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer — at three in the afternoon. 2 Now a man crippled from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. 3 When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. 4 Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, "Look at us!" 5 So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them.
    5. 5. I.S.B.E., "The Beautiful Gate" • Nine gates, with two-storied gatehouses "like towers" (Josephus, BJ, V, v , 3), are mentioned, four on the North, four on the South, and one on the East-the last probably to be identified, though this is still disputed…with the "Gate of Nicanor" (Mid.), or "Corinthian Gate" (Jos), which is undoubtedly "the Beautiful Gate" of Acts 3:2,10…This principal gate received its names from being the gift of a wealthy Alexandrian Jew, Nicanor, and from its being made of Corinthian brass. It was of great size-50 cubits high and 40 cubits wide-and was richly adorned, its brass glittering like gold (Mid., ii.3)...The other gates were covered with gold and silver (Josephus, BJ, V, v , 3).
    6. 6. Acts 3:6-10 • Acts 3:6-10 Then Peter said, "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk." 7 Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man's feet and ankles became strong. 8 He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God. 9 When all the people saw him walking and praising God, 10 they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.
    7. 7. A Real Healing • A healing Pastor came to a church. There was a long line to see him. It was a little boys turn in line and he said he wanted prayer for his hearing. So, the healing Pastor grabbed his ears and said a prayer. The Pastor let go and asked, "how’s your hearing now''. • "I don't know.. it's not till Friday," replied the boy.
    8. 8. He Received A New Life • He asked for money • He received a new life • They didn’t just help him exist in his broken condition. • By the authority of Jesus Christ he was saved.
    9. 9. Off Duty=No Authority • My neighbor Larry, a fish and game warden, decided to go fishing at a local river on his lunch break. Upon arriving, he met up with another angler at his favorite spot. "You can't fish while you're on duty," the angler said as Larry cast his line. "I'm not on duty," Larry said. "It's my lunch break." After a while, Larry decided to check that the fisherman had a license. "Can I see your license?" he asked. • "No," the sharp angler refused. "You're not on duty."
    10. 10. Acts 3:6, 16, “In The Name Of Jesus” • This phrase “in the name of Jesus” is not a magic incantation or mantra. • It is not a “secret key” to force God to answer our prayers. • “Halt in the name of the law.” • Jesus is our only access to Holy God. • It gives Christ the credit and recognition. • 34 of the 36 NIV uses of “name” in Acts are with reference to Jesus’ power & authority, 9 of those are in chs. 3-4. • It is biblical;
    11. 11. Acts Uses, “In The Name Of Jesus” • Acts 2:38…Repent and be baptized…in the name of Jesus… • Acts 3:16…By faith in the name of Jesus… • Acts 4:18…commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus… • Acts 5:40…they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus… • Acts 9:27…he had preached fearlessly in the name of Jesus… • Acts 10:48…he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ… • Acts 16:18…said to the spirit, "In the name of Jesus Christ I command you… • Acts 19:13…They would say, "In the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out…
    12. 12. “In The Name Of Jesus” Is Biblical • Matt 7:22…prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons… • Matt 18:5…whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me… • Matt 18:20…two or three come together in my name… • Matt 21:9…Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!... • Matt 28:19…baptizing them in the name of the Father… • Mark 9:39…No one who does a miracle in my name can…say anything bad about me…
    13. 13. Acts 3:6, 16, “In The Name Of Jesus” • Mark 9:41…anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name… • Mark 16:17…In my name they will drive out demons… • Luke 24:47…forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name… • John 1:12…to those who believed in his name… • John 14:13-14…I will do whatever you ask in my name…You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.
    14. 14. Barnes' Notes • This is equivalent to saying on my account, or for my sake. If a man who has money in a bank authorizes us to draw it, we are said to do it in his name. If a son authorizes us to apply to his father for aid because we are his friends, we do it in the name of the son, and the favor will be bestowed on us from the regard which the parent has to his son, and through him to all his friends. So we are permitted to apply to God in the name of his Son Jesus Christ, because God is in him well pleased (Matt 3:17), and because we are the friends of his Son he answers our requests. Though we are undeserving, yet he loves us on account of his Son, and because he sees in us his image. No privilege is greater than that of approaching God in the name of his Son; no blessings of salvation can be conferred on any who do not come in his name.
    15. 15. The Bible Exposition Commentary • We must pray in Christ's name (vv. 13-14). This is not a "magic formula" that we automatically attach to our prayer requests, guaranteeing that God will answer. To ask anything of the Father, in the name of Jesus, means that we ask what Jesus would ask what would please Him, and what would bring Him glory by furthering His work. When a friend says to you, "You may use my name!" he is handing you a great privilege as well as a tremendous responsibility.
    16. 16. IVP Bible Background Commentary • Ancient Judaism used "name" in so many overlapping senses that the context tells us more here than the background. In the *Old Testament "name" often meant reputation or renown, and when God acted "on account of his name" it was to defend his honor. "In the name of God" could mean as his representative acting on his behalf (Ex 5:23; Deut 18:19-22; Jer 14:14-15), according to his command (Deut 18:5,7), by his help (Ps 118:10-11; Prov 18:10) or using his name in a miraculous act (2 Kings 2:24). (When *rabbis passed on traditions "in the name of" other rabbis it simply means that they were citing their sources, their basis of authority for the tradition.) In prayer, calling on a deity's name simply meant addressing him (1 Kings 18:24-26,32; 2 Kings 5:11; Ps 9:2; 18:49). In the Old Testament and later Judaism "Name" could also simply be a polite and roundabout way of saying "God" without uttering his name. • In this context "name" means something like: those who seek his glory and speak accurately for him, who are genuinely his authorized representatives. Nothing could be further from the pagan magical use of names that sought to manipulate spiritual forces for one's own ends.
    17. 17. Acts 3:11-16 • Acts 3:11-16 While the beggar held on to Peter and John, all the people were astonished and came running to them in the place called Solomon's Colonnade. 12 When Peter saw this, he said to them: "Men of Israel, why does this surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk? 13 The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go. 14 You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. 15 You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. We are witnesses of this. 16 By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus' name and the faith that comes through him that has given this complete healing to him, as you can all see.
    18. 18. Solomon’s Colonnade • Model of “Herod’s temple” which stood between 19 BC and AD 70. The Temple Mount was bordered by columned porticos(1) which on the east side, (immediate foreground) included Solomon’s Colonnade(2). Here Yeshua spoke with the Pharisees in John 10:22-39.
    19. 19. Solomon’s Colonnade • Painting
    20. 20. Acts 3:17-23 • "Now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did your leaders. 18 But this is how God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, saying that his Christ would suffer. 19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, 20 and that he may send the Christ, who has been appointed for you — even Jesus. 21 He must remain in heaven until the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets. 22 For Moses said, 'The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you must listen to everything he tells you. 23 Anyone who does not listen to him will be completely cut off from among his people.'
    21. 21. Acts 3:19, Repent And Return • NAU Acts 3:19 "Therefore repent [metanoeo] and return [epistrepho] … • <3340> μετανοέω metanoeo • Meaning: to change one’s mind or purpose… • <1994> ἐπιστρέφω epistrepho • Meaning: to turn, to return… • Repent and turn/return are not synonyms, or this would be redundant. Repent means to have a change of thought or mind, and turn/return means to change directions. The turn is the result of a changed mind, not the cause. It does no good to turn/stop sinning if your mind is not changed. The order is always #1 have a changed mind, #2 change directions
    22. 22. Acts 3:21, Until The Times Of Restitution Of All Things, KJV • Acts 3:21…restore everything…NIV • Isa 65:20 "Never again will there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, or an old man who does not live out his years; he who dies at a hundred will be thought a mere youth; he who fails to reach a hundred will be considered accursed.
    23. 23. Isa 35, Restitution Of All Things, KJV • Read all of Isa 35 for the Messianic Kingdom • Isa 35:4-6 say to those with fearful hearts, "Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you." • 5 Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. 6 Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy. Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert.
    24. 24. Acts 3:21, Restoration Of All Things Lev 25:8-55, Year Of Jubilee • Lev 25:8-55 "'Count off seven sabbaths of years — seven times seven years forty-nine years. • Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. • It shall be a jubilee for you; each one of you is to return to his family property and each to his own clan. 11 The fiftieth year shall be a jubilee for you; do not sow and do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the untended vines. 12 For it is a jubilee and is to be holy for you; eat only what is taken directly from the fields. • He [slaves] and his children are to be released in the Year of Jubilee…
    25. 25. All The Prophets, Said Christ Would Suffer? • Which ones?
    26. 26. All The Prophets, Said Christ Would Suffer? • Gen 3:15 he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel." • Ps 2:2 The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against his Anointed One. • Ps 22:8 "He trusts in the Lord; let the Lord rescue him. • Hos 5:15 I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me early. KJV • Isa 53:5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. • IVP Bible Background Commentary says “Later teachers often said that a *Messiah would suffer and spoke of two Messiahs, one who would suffer and one who would reign, but the Christians seem to have been the first to proclaim the concept of a suffering Messiah.”
    27. 27. Repent, Then, And Turn To God • Acts 3:19 Repent, then, and turn to God… • 3340 μετανοέω metanoeo {met-an-o-eh'-o} • Meaning: 1) to change one's mind, i.e. to repent 2) to change one's mind for better, heartily to amend with abhorrence of one's past sins
    28. 28. A Prophet Like Me • Acts 3:22 For Moses said, 'The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me… • Deut 18:15 The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own brothers. You must listen to him.
    29. 29. In Closing
    30. 30. No Vacancies • We had been on the road for 15 hours en route from New York to California and were looking for a place to spend the night. At four different motels, though, we were told, "Sorry, no vacancies.“ Heading back to the car, my seven- year-old asked solemnly, • "Mom, are we vacancies?"
    31. 31. The End
    32. 32. Acts 13:8 1 Timothy 6:20 Romans 13:2 2 Timothy 3:8, 4:2 Acts 18:6 1 Peter 5:9 Ephesians 6:13 1 Thessalonians 2:2-25 Daniel 8:25, • If you are going to walk with Jesus Christ, you are going to be opposed.... In our days, to be a true Christian is really to become a scandal. • • --George Whitefield (English preacher who proved to be one of the vessels used by God in the Great Awakening)
    33. 33. Acts 3:2, The Lame Will Leap • NAU Acts 3:2 And a man who had been lame from his mother's womb was being carried along, whom they used to set down every day at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, in order to beg alms of those who were entering the temple. • NAU Isaiah 35:6 Then the lame will leap like a deer, And the tongue of the mute will shout for joy. For waters will break forth in the wilderness And streams in the Arabah. • Paul in Acts 14:8-10
    34. 34. Acts 3:2, Isaiah 35, In Context • NAU Isaiah 35:1 The wilderness and the desert will be glad, And the Arabah will rejoice and blossom; Like the crocus 2 It will blossom profusely And rejoice with rejoicing and shout of joy. The glory of Lebanon will be given to it, The majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They will see the glory of the LORD, The majesty of our God. 3 Encourage the exhausted, and strengthen the feeble. 4 Say to those with anxious heart, "Take courage, fear not. Behold, your God will come with vengeance; The recompense of God will come, But He will save you." 5 Then the eyes of the blind will be opened And the ears of the deaf will be unstopped. 6 Then the lame will leap like a deer, And the tongue of the mute will shout for joy. For waters will break forth in the wilderness And streams in the Arabah. 7 The scorched land will become a pool And the thirsty ground springs of water; In the haunt of jackals, its resting place, Grass becomes reeds and rushes. 8 A highway will be there, a roadway, And it will be called the Highway of Holiness. The unclean will not travel on it, But it will be for him who walks that way, And fools will not wander on it. 9 No lion will be there, Nor will any vicious beast go up on it; These will not be found there. But the redeemed will walk there, 10 And the ransomed of the LORD will return And come with joyful shouting to Zion, With everlasting joy upon their heads. They will find gladness and joy, And sorrow and sighing will flee away.
    35. 35. Acts 3:18-19, Isaiah 43:25 Your Sins May Be Wiped Away • Acts 3:18 "But the things which God announced beforehand by the mouth of all the prophets, that His Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled. 19 "Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord; 20 and that He may send Jesus, the Christ appointed for you, • NAU Isaiah 43:25 "I, even I, am the one who wipes out your transgressions for My own sake, And I will not remember your sins.
