Chap15

  1. 1.  Describe the process to acquire video from various sources using appropriate software
  2. 2. In This Chapter, you’ll learn on:  Acquire and convert between different video formats o Lossy compressed video formats o Lossless compressed video formats o Video format for mobile
  3. 3. Acquiring Video  There are a few ways you can acquire video files o Purchase video clips from online video stores o Purchase movies from movie stores o Extract or import video from movie CDs, DVDs existing video o Capturing with a video camcorder / camera
  4. 4. Digital vs. Analog Video  Analog video uses an electrical signal to capture images on magnetic tape. The video tape formats associated with analog video are VHS, VHS-C, 8mm, Hi8, Video8, Betamax and SVHS.
  5. 5.  A digital video signal is a pattern of 1’s and 0’s that represent the video image. There is no variation in the original signal once it’s captured, and the image does not lose any of its original sharpness or clarity---it’s an exact copy of the original. Digital Video formats include MiniDV, Digital8, MicroMV, DVCam tapes, DVD and mini DVDs and hard drive based camcorders.
  6. 6. Advantages of Digital Video VS Analog Video  When you records digital video, the quality begins with and remains digital. There is no need for conversion thus no quality loss.  Digital video can transfer directly from your digital camcorder to the computer via FireWire or USB while Analog video requires a special video capture card in order to import video onto your computer
  7. 7.  Digital video resolution is higher than analog because you can choose how many pixels per Digital CCD (charged couple devices).  Analog recordings are highly prone to deterioration as compared to Digital recording.  It is much easier and more convenient for Digital video cameras to connect to computers, therefore facilitate easy video editing and duplication. Plus the cameras have more features, are lighter, and more compact.
  8. 8. Video Compression  When digital video is created, it was stored in its pure, uncompressed format; much like digital audio (e.g. CDs were pure uncompressed digital audio data), A raw video file of around 10 seconds would take up to almost 800mb of space. Then along came video compression and over the years in advancement in technology, it is possible to store a 10 seconds video at around 800kbs.  It is possible to achieve a lower file size with video compression, but that would also means there will be a loss of either quality or image size. Similar to the audio codec, a video codec is provides encoding and decoding which may or may not include the use of video compression and/or decompression for digital video.
  9. 9. There are three major groups of video file formats:  Uncompressed audio formats, such as AVI, DV  Formats with lossless compression, such as x264, FFmpeg  Formats with lossy compression, such as RealVideo, Cinepak, Windows Media Encoder and DivX.
