Atomic structure for AQA GCSE Physics

  1. 1. This presentation is all about atomic structure
  2. 2. The Specification says………..
  3. 3. Basic Structure is a small central nucleus composed of protons and neutrons Neutrons Protons
  4. 4. The nucleus is surrounded by electrons
  5. 5. Protons have a positive charge, electrons have a negative charge and neutrons have no charge
  6. 6. Protons and neutrons are a similar size. Electrons are much smaller
  7. 7. In an atom the number of protons = the number of electrons
  8. 8. The atoms has overall no electrical charge
  9. 9. Atoms may lose or gain electrons to form ions
  10. 10. Isotope of an element
  11. 11. Isotopes – atoms have same numbers of protons but can have a different number of neutrons
  12. 12. The total number of protons in an atom is called the atomic number
  13. 13. The total number of protons and neutrons is called its mass number
