  1. 1. JANUARY 21 , 2011 W E E K LY U P D A T E GRADE 5A @ CDNIS The Rights of the ChildDear Parents, Students are in full swing as they investigate our current unit, the central ideabeing, “Actions can support or deny access to children’s rights and equalopportunities.” Our second meeting for our Literature Circles took place yesterday aswe all engage with the book “The Breadwinner.” I have continued reading aloud thestory of Iqbal as well. We are making connections to our own lives, deconstructingrecount texts and beginning to ask important questions that directly relate to thecentral idea. This week students conducted research on a variety of child heroes andare currently completing profiles of them; hopefully they will be posted on our blogsearly next week. I encourage you to look at the class blog. The students have started discussingIqbal via blog commenting. Feel free to add your own thoughts and questions. This week were fortunate enough to have a visit by a pair of authors, SarahHolbrook and Michael Salinger. We completed our work on fractions this week (finally!!) and have now moved intodecimals and percentages. Students completed a summative project of their ownchoosing to demonstrate their understandings of fractions. Please refer to the CDNIS website for information on Chinese New Yearcelebrations for next week. The entire week is a Dress Down Week ONLY if studentschoose to wear Chinese clothing; if not, school uniforms are expected. The CNYFlower Fair will be held on Tuesday. Please refer to the note on the school websiteregarding our green initiatives for ordering tokens; all ordering is encouraged to bedone electronically to set a positive example for our students.Kind Regards,DJ MacPhersondonaldmacpherson@cdnis.edu.hk & http://sites.cdnis.edu.hk/teachers/donaldmacpherson//
