  1. 1. FEBRUARY 25, 2011 W E E K LY U P D A T E GRADE 5A @ CDNIS Spring Into Reading and Unit Wrap-upDear Parents, The week started in a very fun way with 5A reading to buddies in Reception as part of ourSpring into Reading activities. Today, of course, was one of the more relaxed days of theschool year with the students arriving to school in their pajamas and eating pancakes forlunch! Yesterday, we had the opportunity to listen to the storytelling of Lynne Kirk; thechildren were in awe of how well she told her story. There was hardly a sound in the LLACas she spoke! This week students worked diligently to wrap up our unit, “Sharing the Planet.” They havebeen involved in planning, researching and organizing information to create an originalimaginative recount that demonstrates their understanding of our central idea. They alsohave selected a right from the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and created a PublicService Announcement to educate society more deeply about its meaning and how we cansustain it. Next week these PSAs will be posted on our Grade 5 Youtube channel as well ason the students’ blogs so you can see their excellent work and provide valuable feedbackthrough blog comments. Next week we will begin our next unit, “Where we are in place and time,” which willexplore the big idea of what is history and how we know about history. We’ll kick off the unitwith a visit to the Happy Valley Cemetery, where students will be encouraged to use theresources there to construct a history of Hong Kong. Our unit will focus on the sources weuse to uncover and interpret history. More information on this unit will be given to you nextweek. On Tuesday we will celebrate World Maths Day by engaging in Mathletics competitionswith students around the world. Next Friday, March 4, from 8am-9am, students will participate in the Book Swap. Pleaserefer to previous posts for more information. Please note: Swimming for Grade 5 will begin on Thursday, March 2 and will follow thesame timetable as last semester.Spring into Reading information and documents can be downloaded through the linksfound in last week’s blog post.Kind Regards,DJ MacPhersondonaldmacpherson@cdnis.edu.hk & http://sites.cdnis.edu.hk/teachers/donaldmacpherson//
