Sustainable Solutions at Dell
Joy Carter
DBA Strategy
Dr. Denise Land
March 2010
Sustainable Solutions and Dell Computers In this tech–driven world, computers, and electronics are
the common denominators. Millions of people use computers and electronic devices multiple times
every day. Between innovation and use, the need to replace these devices is paramount and creates a
solid market for certain electronic manufacturers. One of the biggest environmental concerns is
toxic waste and plastics in landfills. A report about e–waste on the Greenpeace website states that
"more than 4.6 million [tons] of e–waste ended up in landfills in the United States in 2000. Toxic
chemicals in electronics products can leach into the land over ... Show more content on

In the last portion of the paper, various complexity analysis tools are examined in relation to Dell
and the computer/technology industry. The industry was examined in terms for the Fitness
Landscape, Boid Analysis, Industry Evolution Modeling, and Life Cycle Analysis. Examining Dell
in the context of multiple frameworks granted insights into key factors such as material inputs,
resource depletion, byproducts, waste and disposal options and stakeholder versus societal
obligations and responsibilities. An analysis of the Sustainable Value Framework, including a
detailed analysis of the sustainable value of Dell and its products and services rounds out the
research.
Key Take–aways
One critical factor repeatedly presented itself throughout this research project and that is the
absolute necessity for Dell to find a way to innovate in a sustainable manner. Having Chairman
Michael Dell at the helm again is beneficial to the growth and cohesive vision of the firm, but Dell
is losing ground to rivals such as HP in the areas of technological advances and sales. Another key
take away is that Dell leaders must invest in the training and re–educating of employees and invest
in the research and development of products in collaboration with the firm's key suppliers in its
network. Critical to the success

Case Analysis on Apple Inc
1.0 Introduction
Apple was founded in 1976. It is a relatively young company; a company with its own unique
philosophy as to the way things ought to be. Apple exerts significant creative influence on the
technology industry. Today, the company has three major products: Mac computers, iPod music
players, and the iPhone. In addition to these offerings, the company also offers operating systems,
developer tools, and database software.
Apple's recent success in the marketplace is founded on a philosophy that derives its insight at the
intersection of technology and consumer values. Apple's unique, defiant, and sophisticated
philosophy is all about revolutionizing life's experiences; convergence of digital consumer
electronics and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
2.4 Technological Forces
Technology forces is widely recognised by various literatures on strategic management (Capron and
Glazer, 1987; Johnson and Scholes, 1993; Jan, 2002), as part of the organization and the industry
part of the model as it is used for the creation of competitive advantage. Each year, integrated
circuits and other electronic components become better, faster, and cheaper, providing opportunities
for improving existing computers as well as designing a new kind.
As computer comprises of hardware and software, Apple is affected by technology innovation forces
around it. Rapid innovation on hardware by component producers (e.g. Intel, AMD) and software by
competitors (e.g. Microsoft) as well as complementary products from partner gives no choice for
Apple except responsively catching the new hardware technology and also continuously innovating
to sustain differentiation.
3.0 SWOT Analysis
One of the best ways to develop an overview of where Apple is standing and where they could be in
the future is using the SWOT method. This method is to analyse the internal and external factors
that can affect Apple. Below diagram 3.1 shown the SWOT matrix: Diagram 3.1 SWOT Analysis

Founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin met at Stanford University in 1995. By 1996, they had built a search engine (initially called BackRub) that used links to determine the importance of individual webpages. Google.com was registered as a domain on September 15, 1997. The name – a play on the word "googol" – reflects Larry and Sergey 's mission to organize a seemingly infinite amount of information on the web. Google is most profitable through its online advertising though it has also become very popular in many realms of the online world and technology both.
