Antonio Conselheiro formed a village called Belo Monte in Canudos. He gathered followers who lived in poverty in the backlands of Brazil's northeast. The Brazilian government sent troops to destroy the village of Canudos, killing over 20,000 people between 1896-1897 in the War of Canudos.
