  6. 6. What is valuable? • You can’t be across it all • Make the choice of what to consume • What has the highest value? • If it is the highest value don’t collect it • What is going to generate you the most profit • Look at value in a business context and ROI
  7. 7. Focus • Don’t collect information • Process • Ask yourself what you do with the data that you collect? • It is very easy to collect ‘just in case’ • How do you increase its value? • You should review your collection regularly to determine whether it is still relevant and has value • There is cost to your time for everything you do, including collecting information
  8. 8. Tools for information collection • Requirements • Searchable • Easily backed up and restored • Available across various platforms • Supports and converts to many formats • Easy and quick to use • Having it somewhere handy is the key • Ability to structure • Shareable with others • Consider that the system you develop could then be on sold • Avoid unique solutions • Look for ‘generic’ common systems • There is no ‘perfect’ tool
  9. 9. Manual searching • This is ‘old’ way of finding information • Do you know how to use a search engine effectively? • Operators and Shortcuts (e.g. OR, AND, NOT) • Saving results • What do you do when have found something? • How do you catalogue it? • Does that method make sense to others? • Search Engine history • Review previous searches and visits • Use Google alerts for standing searches on topics • Save it, somewhere, anywhere
  10. 10. Modern way is to follow people • Look to the influencers • Look to people who know where the good information is • Look to people who broadcast quality information • Look to the source • Be pro-active and ask for information as most are happy to share
  11. 11. • Blogs • Social media • Product forums • Events Where are the influencers?
  12. 12. Secrets of social media for information • Don’t follow everyone and everything • Be selective • Focus on ROI for your attention • Use Automation • IFTTT, Zapier • Microsoft Flow • RSS feeds into Teams, Yammer, etc. Adds additional value
  13. 13. The best social media • YouTube • Microsoft Ignite sessions • Microsoft product channels • Create playlists • Use the play later option • Twitter • Short and sweet • Easy to triage • Blogs • Longer time to consume • Batch • GetPocket • Facebook • Friend but unfollow when too noisy
  14. 14. Podcasts • Listen at 1.5 – 2 x speed • Be selective
  15. 15. Test environments • Azure • Demos.microsoft.com • Action Pack benefits • Office 365 Targeted release • Office Insiders • Windows 10 Insiders • Windows Server Insiders • Make sure you are using your IUR
