  4. 4. Its pervasiveness & power to reach global audiences instantly creates DRAMATIC impacts.
  5. 5. There are many reasons you can’t ignore it here’s ONE
  6. 6. #1 You can be drawn in
  7. 7. The reality is you’re already involved.
  8. 8. I could pick any number of examples to illustrate the point -
  9. 9. In 2012 an Australian radio show host said the then Prime Minister’s father died in shame because of her lies.
  10. 10. That was Sunday.
  11. 11. He later apologised “This was a throw-away thing at a private function, which – I thought it was a private function," he said.
  12. 12. Those who believed the gesture was not good enough coalesced online.
  13. 13. More than 56,000 people signed up to an online campaign, pressuring advertisers to withdraw.
  14. 14. That was Monday.
  15. 15. Many did.
  16. 16. Some of those who withdrew included...
  17. 17. Mercedes-Benz Hornsby, Woolworths, Freedom Furniture, Lexus of Parramatta, Coles, ING, Bing Lee, Mazda, 7-Eleven, Sydney Symphony Orchestra & HCF
  18. 18. BIG NAMES
  19. 19. That cost the radio station up to $80,000 per day.
  20. 20. These businesses announced their decisions online, mostly via Twitter
  21. 21. Inadvertently brands became associated with a statement they did not make, but which contradicted their own or customers’ values.
  22. 22. Those which did not withdraw came under pressure to explain.
  23. 23. No one in these businesses woke up that morning expecting to have to pull or justify their marketing.
  24. 24. Who does?
  25. 25. This is the speed & impact of connected communication.
  26. 26. So 3 questions for you -
  27. 27. 1.  How would your business respond to a similar incident?
  28. 28. 2. Has your Board or Executive got a policy on when you would & would not withdraw support?
  29. 29. 3. Where would you announce the decision?
  30. 30. Your executives should be able to answer every one of these questions
  31. 31. If they can’t & you’re reading this you probably have a role in driving that conversation.
