The Cost of Ignoring Enterprise User Experience - Kevin Richardson, INVIDI Technologies

When we, the community of digital marketing, media, and advertising professionals, think about user experience, we tend to think about the experience of the viewer. I’d like to suggest that there is another audience, a forgotten audience, for whom UX is just as crucial – us. The consumer products that we use in our everyday lives – phones, cars, televisions (excluding remotes), B:C websites – have benefitted from 30 years of constant UX attention and have evolved to meet the needs of users in simple and understandable ways. Conversely, business software, tends to be very difficult to use, requiring complex manuals, expensive training, and in some cases, years of experience. We have come to accept this level of user hostility as inevitable, that somehow the rules of UX evolution do not apply to business software. Nothing could be further from the truth. As there is development process, so to there is UX process, which applies to all members of the project team. My presentation describes the business and personnel costs directly associated with poor design and demonstrates how these have been overcome across a range of industries, including ours. Key Takeaways: Attendees will learn: 1. why enterprise software does not have to be difficult to use, expensive to train, or focused on routine task completion, 2. how accepting the current state of enterprise software design limits the productivity of employees, and 3. what questions to ask to ensure that enterprise software supports employees, rather than the other way around.
