Separate Track Assemblies
1. Put the machine on a flat level floor.
The grease in the track adjusting cylinder is under high pressure.
Grease coming out of the relief valve of the track adjuster, which is
under high pressure, can penetrate the body causing personal injury or
death. When loosening the tension on the track, loosen the relief valve
only one turn. Do not visually inspect the relief valve to see if grease is
being released from the track adjuster. Instead, watch the track to see if
it loosens. If the track does not loosen after opening the relief valve,
move the machine forward and backward to release the tension.

2. Release the tension on the track. Loosen relief valve (1) only one turn. If the track does not
loosen after opening the relief valve, move the machine forward and backward until the tension is
released.
3. Using Tooling (C), remove eight bolts (2) that hold two track shoes (3) located directly above
the master pin.
4. Fasten a hoist to each track shoe (3), and remove them from the track assembly. The weight of
each track shoe is 27 kg (60 lb).
5. Move the track assembly until the master pin is in a position between the center track carrier
roller and the rear track carrier roller.
NOTE: During removal of the master pin with Tooling (A), use a 5F-9455 Pilot Pin (4) to
replace the master pin. The 5F-9455 Pilot Pin is part of the 5P-2380 Master Pin Press
Arrangement.

6. Use Tooling (A) to remove the master pin from the track assembly. Make sure the pilot pin is
installed correctly in the track assembly prior to removing Tooling (A).
7. Start the machine, and move pilot pin (4) to the position shown at the rear of the machine.
8. Move the machine to the rear onto Tool (B) just enough to take the load off of pilot pin (4).
9. Remove pilot pin (4) from the track assembly.
10. Move the machine forward to clear the track assembly from the track roller frame assembly.
11. Remove the washers and spacers from the track assembly at the master pin joint.
12. Fasten a hoist to the rear of the track assembly. Raise the track assembly, and remove Tool
(B). Lower the rear of the track assembly to the floor.

1. Install Tooling (A) in the track link and on the final drive sprocket as shown.
2. Start the machine. Move the machine forward until the track assembly is pulled up on the final
drive sprocket and the end of the track assembly is forward of a vertical centerline through the
center of the sprocket. Remove Tooling (A).
3. Install Tool (B) between the first bushing in the track link and the rear carrier roller.
4. Move the final drive sprocket forward. Use Tool (B) to guide track assembly (1) over the track
carrier rollers and the front idler.
5. Fasten a hoist to the front of the track assembly, and raise it. Put Tool (D) in position under the
track shoe as shown.

6. Put 5P-0960 Multipurpose Grease in the bores in the track links. Install washers (2) and
spacers (3) in the counterbores as shown. Use Tool (C) to hold the washers and spacers in place.
7. Connect the ends of the track assembly. Make sure the pin bore in each end of the track
assembly is in alignment with each other. Install the 5P-9455 Pilot Pin (part of 5P2380 Master
Pin Press Arrangement) in the track assembly to hold it together. Make sure the pilot pin is
centered in the track links.
8. Using Tooling (E), reinstall the master pin to hold the track assembly together.
9. Reinstall the two track shoes on the track assembly. Use Tool (F) to tighten the track shoe
mounting bolts.
10. Tighten the tension of the track. Refer to the topic "Tracks" in the 350 & 350 L Excavators
Operation & Maintenance Manual.

Remove & Install Front Idlers, Recoil Spring Assemblies &
Hydraulic Track Adjusters
Start By:
a. separate track assemblies
1. Using the hydraulic track adjuster, extend the front idler, recoil spring assembly and hydraulic
track adjuster in the track roller frame out as far as possible.
NOTE: It may be possible to slide the front idler, recoil spring assembly and hydraulic track
adjuster out of the track roller frame using a pry bar. However, if the guides in the track roller
frame are rusted or there is an accumulation of dirt or rocks in the guides, the unit may have to be
pulled out.
2. Fasten lifting slings and a lift truck to the front idler as shown. Slowly pull front idler, recoil
spring assembly and hydraulic track adjuster (1) partially out of the track roller frame as shown.

3. Fasten lifting slings and a hoist to the front idler and recoil spring assembly (1) as shown. Slide
the front idler, recoil spring assembly and hydraulic track adjuster out of the track roller frame as a
unit. The weight of the unit is 699 kg (1540 lb).
4. Turn front idler, recoil spring assembly and hydraulic track adjuster (1) 180 degrees. Leaving
the hoist attached, install the front idler partially into the track roller frame leaving the bolts that
hold the recoil spring assembly to the front idler exposed.
5. Fasten a lifting sling and a hoist to hydraulic track adjuster (3). Remove two setscrews (2) that
hold the hydraulic track adjuster to the recoil spring assembly. Remove the hydraulic track
adjuster. The weight of the hydraulic track adjuster is 54 kg (120 lb).
6. Fasten a lifting sling and a hoist to recoil spring assembly (5) as shown. Remove four bolts (4)
and the washers that hold the recoil spring assembly to the front idler. Remove the recoil spring
assembly. The weight of the recoil spring assembly is 288 kg (635 lb). The weight of the front
idler is 356 kg (785 lb).

NOTE: The following steps are for the installation of the front idler, recoil spring assembly and
the hydraulic track adjuster.
7. Make sure the mating surfaces on the bearings of the front idler, the support of the recoil spring
assembly and the cylinder of the hydraulic track adjuster are thoroughly clean and free of dirt and
debris prior to assembly.
8. Fasten a lifting sling and a hoist to the front idler. Put the front idler in position in the track
roller frame with the mounting surfaces for the recoil spring assembly facing out.
9. Fasten a lifting sling and a hoist to the recoil spring assembly. Put the recoil spring assembly in
position against the bearings on the front idler. Make sure all four bolt holes are in alignment.
Install the four bolts and washers that hold the recoil spring assembly to the front idler.
10. Fasten a lifting sling and a hoist to the hydraulic track adjuster. Put the hydraulic track adjuster
in position on the recoil spring assembly. Make sure the fill valve and relief valve of the hydraulic
track adjuster will be facing toward the outside (opening in the track roller frame) after final
installation of the unit in the track roller frame.
11. Put 9S-3263 Thread Lock on the threads of the two setscrews that hold the hydraulic track
adjuster to the recoil spring assembly. Install the two setscrews, and tighten them.
12. Put a thin coat of 5P-0960 Multipurpose Grease on the top and bottom side of the bearing on
each side of the front idler. Also, apply grease to the bearing channel guides in the track roller
frame. The addition of the grease will aid in sliding the front idler, recoil spring assembly and the
hydraulic track adjuster into the track roller frame.
13. Refasten the lifting slings and the hoist to the front idler and recoil spring assembly. Open the
relief valve on the hydraulic track adjuster only one turn. Position the front idler, recoil spring
assembly and the hydraulic track adjuster in its correct position in the track roller frame. Using a
pry bar, slide the unit the remainder of the way into the track roller frame.

Front Idlers

Disassemble & Assemble Front Idlers
Start By:
a. remove front idlers, recoil spring assemblies and hydraulic track adjusters
1. Thoroughly clean the outside of the front idler prior to disassembly.
2. Remove the fill/drain plug from the front idler. Drain the oil from the idler into a suitable
container for storage or disposal. The capacity of the idler is approximately 680 ml (23.12 oz.).
3. Put the front idler on its side as shown. The weight of the front idler is 356 kg (785 lb).
4. Remove two spring pins (1) from bearings (2). Fasten a hoist to two bearings (2), and remove
them from the shaft of the front idler. The weight of each bearing is 34 kg (75 lb).

5. Remove Duo-Cone seals (3) from bearings (2).
6. Remove shaft (5) from the front idler.
7. Remove two O-ring seals (4) from shaft (5).
8. Remove Duo-Cone seal (6) from each side of the front idler.

9. Remove bushings (7) from each side of the idler.
NOTE: The following steps are for the assembly of the front idler.
10. Thoroughly clean all parts of the front idler prior to assembly.
11. Check the condition of bushings (7). If the bushings are damaged, use new parts for
replacement.
12. Lower the temperature of bushings (7), and install one in each side of the front idler with a
press.
13. Temporarily install a bearing (2) on shaft (5). Install the shaft in the front idler. Install the
other bearing (2) on the shaft. Check the end play of the shaft. The shaft end play must be 0.26 to
1.26 mm (.010 to .050 in). Remove two bearings (2) and shaft (5) from the front idler.
NOTICE
Refer to "Assembly And Installation Of Conventional Duo-Cone
Seals" in this module.
NOTE: The rubber seals and all surfaces that make contact with the seals must be clean and dry.
After installation of the seals, put clean SAE 30 oil on the contact surfaces of the metal seals.
14. Install a Duo-Cone seal (6) in each side of the idler with Tool (A).
15. Install a Duo-Cone seal (3) in each bearing (2) with Tool (A).

16. Check the condition of O-ring seals (4) used on shaft (5). If the seals are damaged, use new
parts for replacement. Install two O-ring seals (4) on shaft (5). Put clean SAE 30 oil on the seals.
17. Check the condition of spring pins (1) used to hold bearings (2) to shaft (5). If the spring pins
are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.
18. Install shaft (5) in either bearing (2). Make sure the spring pin hole in the shaft is in alignment
with the spring pin hole in the bearing. Also make sure the marking "R" and the milled surface if
the shaft is facing toward the rear of the bearing as positioned in the machine. Install a new spring
pin (1) to hold the unit together. Position the slit in the spring pin as shown in Illustration
C47928P1.
19. Install the shaft and bearing in the front idler.
20. Install the other bearing (2) on shaft (5) as in Step 18. Make sure the spring pin hole in the
shaft is in alignment with the spring pin hole in the bearing. Install a new spring pin (1) to hold the
bearing to the shaft as in Step 18.
21. Check the front idler for air leaks. Apply 260 ± 10 kPa (37.7 ± 1.5 psi) of air through the fill
plug hole of the idler. Hold this pressure for a minimum of 30 seconds. If the pressure gauge
reading does not change in a 30 second time period, it can be assumed there are no leaks in the
front idler.
22. Put the front idler in a vertical position. Fill the front idler with 680 ml (23.12 oz.) of clean
SAE 30 oil. Put a thin coat of 9S-3263 Thread Lock on the threads of the fill/drain plug, and
install it.

1. Prior to disassembling and assembling the recoil spring assembly, make sure Tool (A) is on a
level surface.
2. Thoroughly clean the outside surface of the recoil spring assembly prior to disassembly.

3. Install Tool (D) on Tool (B) as shown.
NOTE: Two adjustable supports (1), reaction plate (2) and movable plate (3) are part of Tool (A).
4. Adjust the spacing between reaction plate (2) and movable plate (3) so it is approximately the
same length as the recoil spring assembly. Also, make sure two adjustable supports (1) are
positioned between the reaction plate and the movable plate as shown. Level the two supports.
NOTE: The recoil spring assembly may have to be installed in Tool (A) from the end. In this
case, reaction plate (2) must be removed; then reinstalled after the recoil spring assembly is in
place on two adjustable supports (1).
NOTICE
Do not remove the hoist from the recoil spring assembly until it is
leveled, centered and locked in Tool (A).
5. The weight of the recoil spring assembly is 288 kg (635 lb). Fasten a hoist to the recoil spring
assembly. Put the recoil spring assembly in position on two adjustable supports (1) in Tool (A).
Adjust the two adjustable supports to align the centerline of the recoil spring assembly with the
centerline of Tool (A).

NOTE: The hoist has been removed from the recoil spring assembly only for better photo
illustration of level (4).
6. Put a level (4) on the recoil spring assembly. Reposition the recoil spring assembly until it is
level, and the recoil retaining rod and nut (6) are centered in the hole in reaction plate (2) as shown
in Photo C52009P1. The recoil spring assembly is leveled by moving adjustable supports (1) up or
down. After the recoil spring assembly is leveled and centered, install two pins (5) on the back
side of reaction plate (2) as shown. Operate Tool (B) a small amount to hold the recoil spring
assembly in position between reaction plate (2) and movable plate (3). Again, check to make sure
the recoil spring assembly is leveled and centered.
The recoil spring assembly is assembled under a force of several tons.
Do not put the recoil spring assembly under compression until covers
(7) on Tool (A) have been closed. It is possible for the recoil spring
assembly to twist and come out of Tool (A), resulting in personal injury
or death.
7. Close covers (7) on Tool (A). Using Tool (B), compress the recoil spring assembly a small
amount. Through the opening in the end of Tool (A), remove the two socket head bolts and the
lock strip from the end of the recoil spring retaining rod. Remove nut (6) with Tool (E). Remove
the washer from behind nut (6). Release the force on the recoil spring assembly.
8. Open the covers on Tool (A). Fasten a hoist to the disassembled recoil spring assembly, and
remove it from Tool (A).

9. Separate the components of the recoil spring assembly. Remove recoil spring retaining rod (12),
support (10) and spring (9) from support assembly (8).
NOTE: The following steps are for the assembly of the recoil spring assembly.
10. Check the condition of the threads on recoil spring retaining rod (12) and nut (6). If the threads
are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.
The spring in the recoil spring assembly is assembled under a force of
several tons. Do not put the recoil spring under compression or release
the tension with nut (6) on the end of recoil spring retaining rod (12).
Damaged threads on recoil spring retaining rod (12) or in nut (6) can
cause the assembly to come apart with force, resulting in personal
injury or death.
11. Check the inside of support assembly (8). Make sure the support assembly is clean and free of
dirt and debris.
12. Assemble the recoil spring assembly loosely. Install spring (9) in support assembly (8). Install
recoil spring retaining rod (12) and support (10).

NOTE: It may be necessary to use a pry bar between movable plate (3) of Tool (A) and the back
side of the recoil spring assembly to line up support (10) with support assembly (8).
13. Fasten a hoist to the recoil spring assembly, and put it in position in Tool (A). Center and level
the recoil spring assembly as in Steps 5 and 6. Operate Tool (B), and guide the end of the recoil
spring assembly through the hole in reaction plate (2). Again, check to make sure the recoil spring
assembly is leveled and centered in Tool (A). Make sure a vertical centerline through the two pin
holes is at a right angle to support (10) as shown. Install the support so the welds are positioned to
obtain dimension (Y), 50 mm (1.969 in). Remove the hoist from the recoil spring assembly.
14. Close covers (7) on Tool (A). Compress the recoil spring assembly with Tool (B). Open the
covers on Tool (A), and measure the assembled length of the recoil spring assembly. Measure the
distance from the end of the support assembly to the mark on support (10) as shown in Illustration
C72111P1. The assembled length [dimension (X)] of the recoil spring assembly must be 830 ±
1.00 mm (32.677 ± 0.039 in). If the assembled length is not correct, close covers (7) on Tool (A),
and adjust the spring length with Tool (B). If the assembled length is correct, install washer (11)
and nut (6). Tighten nut (6) with Tool (E).
15. Fasten a hoist to the recoil spring assembly, and remove it from Tool (A). Put 9S-3263
Thread Lock on the threads of the two socket head bolts that hold lock strip (13) in place. Install
the lock strip and the two socket head bolts that hold it. Bend the lock strip over the flats on nut
(6).

Hydraulic Track Adjusters

Disassemble Hydraulic Track Adjusters
Start By:
a. remove front idlers, recoil spring assemblies and hydraulic track adjusters
1. Thoroughly clean the outside of the hydraulic track adjuster prior to disassembling it. The
weight of the hydraulic track adjuster is 54 kg (120 lb).
2. Attach a grease gun to fill valve (3). Pump grease through the fill valve and into cylinder (6) to
remove piston (2). Remove the piston.
3. Remove the O-ring seals and back-up rings from the piston.
4. Remove the two bolts and stopper plate assembly (5) from cylinder (6). Remove fill valve (3)
and relief valve (4) from the cylinder. Remove lip-type seal (1) from the cylinder.
Assemble Hydraulic Track Adjusters
1. Make sure all parts of the hydraulic track adjuster are clean and free of dirt and debris prior to
assembly.

NOTICE
Install back-up rings (2) and (3) and O-ring seals (1) on piston (4) in
the positions shown in Illustration C71516P1. Back-up rings (2) and (3)
can be identified by their color. Back-up rings (2) are brown. Back-up
rings (3) are black. Do not interchange the positions of the back-up
rings and O-ring seals. When piston (4) is installed in cylinder (8),
make sure to keep it square to prevent possible damage to the back-up
rings and O-ring seals.
2. Install O-ring seals (1) and back-up rings (2) and (3) on piston (4) in the positions shown in
Illustration C71516P1.
3. Put a small amount of 5P-0960 Multipurpose Grease on the sliding surface of piston (4).
Make sure the grease covers back-up rings (2) and (3) and O-ring seals (1). Also, put grease on the
lower end of cylinder (8). This will prevent air from getting into the cylinder during installation of
the piston. Install piston (4) in the cylinder. It may be necessary to use a soft faced hammer to
install the piston in the cylinder.
4. Center the piston in the cylinder. Put a small amount of 5P-0960 Multipurpose Grease on the
inside diameter of lip-type seal (9). Install lip-type seal (9) in the cylinder with the sealing lip
facing toward the outside of the cylinder and until it is even with the outside surface of the
cylinder.
5. Install fill valve (5) and relief valve (6) in the cylinder. Tighten the fill valve and the relief valve
to a torque of 34 ± 5 N·m (25 ± 4 lb ft).
6. Install stopper plate (7) and the two bolts which hold it.

Put the machine on a flat level floor. The grease in the track adjusting cylinder is under high pressure. Grease coming out of the relief valve of the track adjuster, which is under high pressure, can penetrate the body causing personal injury or death. When loosening the tension on the track, loosen the relief valve only one turn. Do not visually inspect the relief valve to see if grease is being released from the track adjuster. Instead, watch the track to see if it loosens.   • 3. 2. Release the tension on the track. Loosen relief valve (1) only one turn. If the track does not loosen after opening the relief valve, move the machine forward and backward until the tension is released. 3. Using Tooling (C), remove eight bolts (2) that hold two track shoes (3) located directly above the master pin. 4. Fasten a hoist to each track shoe (3), and remove them from the track assembly. The weight of each track shoe is 27 kg (60 lb). 5. Move the track assembly until the master pin is in a position between the center track carrier roller and the rear track carrier roller. NOTE: During removal of the master pin with Tooling (A), use a 5F-9455 Pilot Pin (4) to replace the master pin.   • 4. 6. Use Tooling (A) to remove the master pin from the track assembly. Make sure the pilot pin is installed correctly in the track assembly prior to removing Tooling (A). 7. Start the machine, and move pilot pin (4) to the position shown at the rear of the machine. 8. Move the machine to the rear onto Tool (B) just enough to take the load off of pilot pin (4). 9. Remove pilot pin (4) from the track assembly. 10. Move the machine forward to clear the track assembly from the track roller frame assembly. 11. Remove the washers and spacers from the track assembly at the master pin joint. 12. Fasten a hoist to the rear of the track assembly. Raise the track assembly, and remove Tool (B). Lower the rear of the track assembly to the floor.   • 5. 1. Install Tooling (A) in the track link and on the final drive sprocket as shown. 2. Start the machine. Move the machine forward until the track assembly is pulled up on the final drive sprocket and the end of the track assembly is forward of a vertical centerline through the center of the sprocket. Remove Tooling (A). 3. Install Tool (B) between the first bushing in the track link and the rear carrier roller. 4. Move the final drive sprocket forward. Use Tool (B) to guide track assembly (1) over the track carrier rollers and the front idler. 5. Fasten a hoist to the front of the track assembly, and raise it.   • 6. 6. Put 5P-0960 Multipurpose Grease in the bores in the track links. Install washers (2) and spacers (3) in the counterbores as shown. Use Tool (C) to hold the washers and spacers in place. 7. Connect the ends of the track assembly. Make sure the pin bore in each end of the track assembly is in alignment with each other. Install the 5P-9455 Pilot Pin (part of 5P2380 Master Pin Press Arrangement) in the track assembly to hold it together. Make sure the pilot pin is centered in the track links. 8. Using Tooling (E), reinstall the master pin to hold the track assembly together. 9. Reinstall the two track shoes on the track assembly. Use Tool (F) to tighten the track shoe mounting bolts. 10. Using the hydraulic track adjuster, extend the front idler, recoil spring assembly and hydraulic track adjuster in the track roller frame out as far as possible. NOTE: It may be possible to slide the front idler, recoil spring assembly and hydraulic track adjuster out of the track roller frame using a pry bar. However, if the guides in the track roller frame are rusted or there is an accumulation of dirt or rocks in the guides, the unit may have to be pulled out. 2. Fasten lifting slings and a lift truck to the front idler as shown. Slide the front idler, recoil spring assembly and hydraulic track adjuster out of the track roller frame as a unit. The weight of the unit is 699 kg (1540 lb). 4. Turn front idler, recoil spring assembly and hydraulic track adjuster (1) 180 degrees. Leaving the hoist attached, install the front idler partially into the track roller frame leaving the bolts that hold the recoil spring assembly to the front idler exposed. 5. Fasten a lifting sling and a hoist to hydraulic track adjuster (3). Remove two setscrews (2) that hold the hydraulic track adjuster to the recoil spring assembly. Remove the hydraulic track adjuster. The weight of the hydraulic track adjuster is 54 kg (120 lb). 6. Fasten a lifting sling and a hoist to recoil spring assembly (5) as shown. Remove four bolts (4) and the washers that hold the recoil spring assembly to the front idler. Remove the recoil spring assembly. The weight of the recoil spring assembly is 288 kg (635 lb).   • 9. NOTE: The following steps are for the installation of the front idler, recoil spring assembly and the hydraulic track adjuster. 7. Make sure the mating surfaces on the bearings of the front idler, the support of the recoil spring assembly and the cylinder of the hydraulic track adjuster are thoroughly clean and free of dirt and debris prior to assembly. 8. Fasten a lifting sling and a hoist to the front idler. Put the front idler in position in the track roller frame with the mounting surfaces for the recoil spring assembly facing out. 9. Fasten a lifting sling and a hoist to the recoil spring assembly. Put the recoil spring assembly in position against the bearings on the front idler. Make sure all four bolt holes are in alignment. Install the four bolts and washers that hold the recoil spring assembly to the front idler. 10. Fasten a lifting sling and a hoist to the hydraulic track adjuster. Put the hydraulic track adjuster in position on the recoil spring assembly. Make sure the fill valve and relief valve of the hydraulic track adjuster will be facing toward the outside (opening in the track roller frame) after final installation of the unit in the track roller frame. 11. Put 9S-3263 Thread Lock on the threads of the two setscrews that hold the hydraulic track adjuster to the recoil spring assembly. Install the two setscrews, and tighten them. 12. Put a thin coat of 5P-0960 Multipurpose Grease on the top and bottom side of the bearing on each side of the front idler. Also, apply grease to the bearing channel guides in the track roller frame. The addition of the grease will aid in sliding the front idler, recoil spring assembly and the hydraulic track adjuster into the track roller frame. 13. Refasten the lifting slings and the hoist to the front idler and recoil spring assembly. Open the relief valve on the hydraulic track adjuster only one turn. Position the front idler, recoil spring assembly and the hydraulic track adjuster in its correct position in the track roller frame.   • 12. 9. Remove bushings (7) from each side of the idler. NOTE: The following steps are for the assembly of the front idler. 10. Thoroughly clean all parts of the front idler prior to assembly. 11. Check the condition of bushings (7). If the bushings are damaged, use new parts for replacement. 12. Lower the temperature of bushings (7), and install one in each side of the front idler with a press. 13. Temporarily install a bearing (2) on shaft (5). Install the shaft in the front idler. Install the other bearing (2) on the shaft. Check the end play of the shaft. The shaft end play must be 0.26 to 1.26 mm (.010 to .050 in). Remove two bearings (2) and shaft (5) from the front idler. NOTICE Refer to "Assembly And Installation Of Conventional Duo-Cone Seals" in this module. NOTE: The rubber seals and all surfaces that make contact with the seals must be clean and dry. After installation of the seals, put clean SAE 30 oil on the contact surfaces of the metal seals. 14. Install a Duo-Cone seal (6) in each side of the idler with Tool (A). 15.   • 13. 16. Check the condition of O-ring seals (4) used on shaft (5). If the seals are damaged, use new parts for replacement. Install two O-ring seals (4) on shaft (5). Put clean SAE 30 oil on the seals. 17. Check the condition of spring pins (1) used to hold bearings (2) to shaft (5). If the spring pins are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement. 18. Install shaft (5) in either bearing (2). Make sure the spring pin hole in the shaft is in alignment with the spring pin hole in the bearing. Also make sure the marking "R" and the milled surface if the shaft is facing toward the rear of the bearing as positioned in the machine. Install a new spring pin (1) to hold the unit together. Position the slit in the spring pin as shown in Illustration C47928P1. 19. Install the shaft and bearing in the front idler. 20. Install the other bearing (2) on shaft (5) as in Step 18. Make sure the spring pin hole in the shaft is in alignment with the spring pin hole in the bearing. Install a new spring pin (1) to hold the bearing to the shaft as in Step 18. 21. Check the front idler for air leaks. Apply 260 ± 10 kPa (37.7 ± 1.5 psi) of air through the fill plug hole of the idler. Hold this pressure for a minimum of 30 seconds. If the pressure gauge reading does not change in a 30 second time period, it can be assumed there are no leaks in the front idler. 22. Put the front idler in a vertical position. Fill the front idler with 680 ml (23.12 oz.) of clean SAE 30 oil. Adjust the spacing between reaction plate (2) and movable plate (3) so it is approximately the same length as the recoil spring assembly. Also, make sure two adjustable supports (1) are positioned between the reaction plate and the movable plate as shown. Level the two supports. NOTE: The recoil spring assembly may have to be installed in Tool (A) from the end. In this case, reaction plate (2) must be removed; then reinstalled after the recoil spring assembly is in place on two adjustable supports (1).   • 17. NOTE: The hoist has been removed from the recoil spring assembly only for better photo illustration of level (4). 6. Put a level (4) on the recoil spring assembly. Reposition the recoil spring assembly until it is level, and the recoil retaining rod and nut (6) are centered in the hole in reaction plate (2) as shown in Photo C52009P1. The recoil spring assembly is leveled by moving adjustable supports (1) up or down. After the recoil spring assembly is leveled and centered, install two pins (5) on the back side of reaction plate (2) as shown. Operate Tool (B) a small amount to hold the recoil spring assembly in position between reaction plate (2) and movable plate (3). Again, check to make sure the recoil spring assembly is leveled and centered. The recoil spring assembly is assembled under a force of several tons. Do not put the recoil spring assembly under compression until covers (7) on Tool (A) have been closed. It is possible for the recoil spring assembly to twist and come out of Tool (A), resulting in personal injury or death. 7. Close covers (7) on Tool (A). Using Tool (B), compress the recoil spring assembly a small amount. Through the opening in the end of Tool (A), remove the two socket head bolts and the lock strip from the end of the recoil spring retaining rod. Remove nut (6) with Tool (E). Remove the washer from behind nut (6). Release the force on the recoil spring assembly. 8. Open the covers on Tool (A).   • 18. 9. Separate the components of the recoil spring assembly. Remove recoil spring retaining rod (12), support (10) and spring (9) from support assembly (8). NOTE: The following steps are for the assembly of the recoil spring assembly. 10. Check the condition of the threads on recoil spring retaining rod (12) and nut (6). If the threads are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement. The spring in the recoil spring assembly is assembled under a force of several tons. Do not put the recoil spring under compression or release the tension with nut (6) on the end of recoil spring retaining rod (12). Damaged threads on recoil spring retaining rod (12) or in nut (6) can cause the assembly to come apart with force, resulting in personal injury or death. 11. Check the inside of support assembly (8). Make sure the support assembly is clean and free of dirt and debris. 12. Assemble the recoil spring assembly loosely. Install spring (9) in support assembly (8).   • 19. NOTE: It may be necessary to use a pry bar between movable plate (3) of Tool (A) and the back side of the recoil spring assembly to line up support (10) with support assembly (8). 13. Fasten a hoist to the recoil spring assembly, and put it in position in Tool (A). Center and level the recoil spring assembly as in Steps 5 and 6. Operate Tool (B), and guide the end of the recoil spring assembly through the hole in reaction plate (2). Again, check to make sure the recoil spring assembly is leveled and centered in Tool (A). Make sure a vertical centerline through the two pin holes is at a right angle to support (10) as shown. Install the support so the welds are positioned to obtain dimension (Y), 50 mm (1.969 in). Remove the hoist from the recoil spring assembly. 14. Close covers (7) on Tool (A). Compress the recoil spring assembly with Tool (B). Open the covers on Tool (A), and measure the assembled length of the recoil spring assembly. Measure the distance from the end of the support assembly to the mark on support (10) as shown in Illustration C72111P1. The assembled length [dimension (X)] of the recoil spring assembly must be 830 ± 1.00 mm (32.677 ± 0.039 in). If the assembled length is not correct, close covers (7) on Tool (A), and adjust the spring length with Tool (B). If the assembled length is correct, install washer (11) and nut (6). Tighten nut (6) with Tool (E). 15. Fasten a hoist to the recoil spring assembly, and remove it from Tool (A). Put 9S-3263 Thread Lock on the threads of the two socket head bolts that hold lock strip (13) in place. Install the lock strip and the two socket head bolts that hold it.   • 23. NOTICE Install back-up rings (2) and (3) and O-ring seals (1) on piston (4) in the positions shown in Illustration C71516P1. Back-up rings (2) and (3) can be identified by their color. Back-up rings (2) are brown. Back-up rings (3) are black. Do not interchange the positions of the back-up rings and O-ring seals. When piston (4) is installed in cylinder (8), make sure to keep it square to prevent possible damage to the back-up rings and O-ring seals. 2. Install O-ring seals (1) and back-up rings (2) and (3) on piston (4) in the positions shown in Illustration C71516P1. 3. Put a small amount of 5P-0960 Multipurpose Grease on the sliding surface of piston (4). Make sure the grease covers back-up rings (2) and (3) and O-ring seals (1). Also, put grease on the lower end of cylinder (8). This will prevent air from getting into the cylinder during installation of the piston. Install piston (4) in the cylinder. It may be necessary to use a soft faced hammer to install the piston in the cylinder. 4. Center the piston in the cylinder. Put a small amount of 5P-0960 Multipurpose Grease on the inside diameter of lip-type seal (9). Install lip-type seal (9) in the cylinder with the sealing lip facing toward the outside of the cylinder and until it is even with the outside surface of the cylinder. 5.
