Facebook and twitter

 1. 1. Topic of Discussion: Facebook and Twitter in Brunei Darussalam

Objectives

Tasks

Problems

Others

 2. 2.

To create awareness mainly for educators (the importance of having these social networking sites for education in Brunei).

To see how many people use social networks i.e. Facebook and Twitter (to identify which is the most preferable site).

To manage the effects of using them.

To determine which age of groups more frequently uses Twitter/Facebook.

 3. 3.

For survey purposes, we have decided to distribute our questionnaire forms to the following: government and non-government organisations, primary schools, secondary schools, sixth forms and university institutions.

We initially intended to create 500 copies of the survey forms (and we had done so), however, due to insufficient amount of time, we only managed to receive 222 completed forms back. The rest were discarded.

As soon as we obtained an exact amount of information, we constructed diagrams (as you can observe from the “Analyzed Data” ).

In the “Photos ” section, you can as well see scan images of how we analyzed our statistics and data.

 4. 4.

Here are four points that we can link to the problems of Facebook/Twitter:

How beneficial the social networking sites, i.e. Twitter; Facebook is (for education, entertainment, business and religious)?

The importance of having these sites (for education, entertainment, business and religious)?

How effective these sites is (for education, entertainment, business and religious)?

The long term (negative) effects of using these social networks.

 5. 5.

Some of the Sub-topics (to be included in presentation slides):

Why use Facebook? Pros: Application mashup (e.g. instant message and image/video sharing); Easy to use; Huge, rapidly growing installed user base; “True Friends” feature; Allows third party application, and Emphasize on connection (e.g. mutual friends)

Why use Twitter? Pros: Easy to navigate, update, promote; Reach far beyond your inner circle of friends; One feed pools all users; Rapid responsiveness; You can use an RSS reader for updates; Extensible messaging platform; Varieties of 3rd Party Applications; Potential SMS text messaging; Potential future advertising, and Potential cost advantage.

 6. 6.

Which is better? (Listing out the cons) Facebook: More difficult to navigate and update; Requires investment of time, Opt in model requires a user to allow others to connect; Less immediate response (unless you stay logged on continually), Overhead of mashup will slow down the system (takes time to load) and etc.

Twitter: Limited functionality (i.e. find people, send messages, and direct replies); Limited to 140 characters per update; Not all people see the usefulness of it; Over-emphasis on follower counts; Easily abused for spam and increase the noise level (e.g. out of capacity); Not readily apparent monetization strategy yet and etc.

What are the effects/impacts of both? Both positives and negatives such as strengthen relationships or vice-versa; consumes loads of times; crimes in social network (e.g. bullying, stealing photos, insulting another with fake accounts) and more.
