Overview
The Sustainability and Energy Division of the D.C. Department of General Services (DGS) seeks a results-
oriented individual with excellent analytical, writing, and communication skills for a full-time, paid
internship position to support the agency’s recycling and energy reduction efforts in D.C. Public Schools.
A major new initiative of this program is the development of a comprehensive outreach strategy and
online communication materials to support the roll out of new instructions, trainings, and educational
opportunities related to recycling and energy reduction for the upcoming 2013-2014 school year.
The intern will work with the Schools Conservation Coordinator to compile and organize contact
information and other school-specific data; develop an information tracking system; and produce a
variety of high-quality and informative outreach materials to reach multiple audiences including
principals and teachers, custodial and food services staff, and students of various ages.
Location: Washington D.C.
Duration: 12 weeks starting no later than June 1, 2013.
Compensation: Hourly wage commensurate with qualifications.
Responsibilities
• Collaborate with agency staff to identify key audiences and messages for achieving recycling and
energy reduction targets in schools.
• Communicate as needed with representatives of other relevant agencies and organizations (e.g.
DC Public Schools, Department of Public Works, environmental education non-profits, etc).
• Compile and organize contact information and other school-specific data; develop consistent
methods for updating and tracking contacts and data.
• Develop clear, concise factsheets, instructional memos, and guidebooks; promotional materials
(e.g. for recycling/energy reduction competitions); fliers, posers, and banners; presentations and
educational materials.
• Create online repository and dissemination strategy for communications materials.
• Investigate innovative methods of disseminating online content; develop appropriate social
media strategy and/or use of data display or mapping technologies.
• Liaise with communications team, designers, printers as necessary to assure product quality.
• Support other activities as needed.

Qualifications
• Ideal candidate will have an undergraduate or Master’s degree in environmental studies or
science, public policy, communications, education, or other relevant field.
• Very strong writing skills and excellent academic performance.
• Attention to tedious detail and ability to compile and organize large amounts of data.
• Experience with online outreach, website development, and social media.
• Demonstrated interest and/or experience working on recycling and energy reduction.
• Demonstrated interest and/or experience working with D.C. Public Schools or other urban
schools.
• Excellent computer skills in Microsoft Office.
• Good eye for design and familiarity with programs such as Adobe Photoshop and InDesign
• Familiarity with online mapping applications and Geographic Information Systems is preferred.
• Ability to work well in a team, juggle multiple priorities, and work under tight deadlines.
