I strongly believe that self-development is one of the best actions a person can take and that self-improvement will ultimately lead to more achievements and happiness in a person’s life thananything else. One must realize that self-improvement takes time and planning. I want to share with you what Ibelieve to be a good self-improvement plan.Like it or not, you can’t achieve meaningful changes overnight. It’s just not that simple. Developing a new skill or attitude requires changing your thinking. Andchanging your thinking takes time, practice and repetition.Changes can take months…generally 6 to 12 months. And the more aspects you need to change, the longer it will take. As long as you know this fact, you can move on to the next step.Ask yourself “If I could change one thing about myself, what would it be?” Once you identifythis one thing you can work on creating that change. Once that change is achieved, ask the samequestion again and move on to the new change. This is how you make the best use of your time and energy and the most importanttransformations happen first.Instead of saying “I want to have more confidence when speaking in public.” Use this phrase, “Iwant to feel comfortable, energized and coherent when I speak in front of 100 people andprovide those people with amazing information. Can you see and feel the difference? The first phrase sounds vague and unemotional. It doesn’t motivate or inspire. The secondversion is clear, concise and inspires you to act right now. This is how you want to phrase your self-improvement goals. Be sure to write them down andread them often.
Now that you have your self-improvement goals, it’s important to break them down into smallersteps. Establish daily activities to perform to reach your goals. Now that you have those dailyactivities, you will be able to take action. For instance, for the public speaking goal, you can set specific activities such as reading a bookon public speaking, practice speaking in front of a mirror and then speaking in front of a smallgroup such as friends or family.By doing these daily actions, you can make true progress towards your goals. And soon you willfind you have reached them.In order to stay motivated to make these changes, be sure to reward yourself for the progress youhave made. Progress is motivating but sometimes you need a little more.So in the situation where you need more motivation to continue with your self-improvementplan, think of the things you enjoy and offer them to yourself as rewards for doing your dailypractice activities. The key is to offer yourself instant gratification. As soon as you’ve done something, you rewardyourself. This should keep you moving forward. With the right expectations, goals and incentives, you’ll make your self-development journey funand productive. You’ll transform yourself and your life, and you’ll enjoy the process as well. After all, self-improvement is a life-long journey, so you enjoy it!
