Early yearsHe was not able to join the German Army in WW 1 because of thedisability in his leg (osteomyelitis, a swelling of the bone marrow.)In the 1920’s he was not able to accomplished his career as ajournalist, novelist and playwright.In 1922 he become a member of the National Socialist GermanWorker’s (Nazi) party.He become acquainted with Adolf Hitler.Goebbels gave Hitler the idea that words and images were potentdevices that could be used to brainwash the German people.Hitler was impressed with Goebbels ability to communicate histhoughts while Goebbels was enamored of Hitler’s talent for speakingin front of large crowds.
  4. 4. Rising in the Nazi party RanksIn 1928, Goebbels was elected to the Reichstag, the Germanparliament.Hitler name him the Nazi party propaganda director.He arranged massive political gathering at which Hitler waspresented as the savior of the new Germany.

Minister of public enlightenment and propagandaIn January 1933 when Hitler become the German chancellor, and inmarch of that years he appointed Goebbels the country’s minister forpublic enlightenment and propaganda.Goebbels had complete JURISDICTION (the official power to makelegal decisions and judgments) over the content of Germansnewspapers, magazines, books , music , films, stage plays, radioprograms and fine arts.His mission was to censor all opposition to Hitler and present thechancellor and the Nazi party in the most positive way while stirringup hatred for Jewish people

The works of dozens of writers were destroyed, including German- born authors. Such authors like: Erich maria rmarquw Arnald zweig Thomas mann etcIn September 1933, Goebbels became director of the newly formedReich chamber of culture.His mission was to control all aspects of the creative arts.

The power of the moving imageAt the start of WW II in 1939, Goebbels was given the task ofuplifting the German people and employing the media, andspecifically the cinema to convince the population to support the wareffort.One of the major project was the Der ewige jude AKA the eternalJew.A propaganda film that show the Jews as depicted as parasites whodisrupt the world.

Over viewIn 1933, the year Adolf Hitler (1889-1945) became chancellor ofGermany, he named Joseph Goebbels (1897-1945), his trusted friendand colleague, to the post of minister for public enlightenment andpropaganda. Goebbels was charged with presenting Hitler to thepublic in the most favorable way, regulating the content of all Germanmedia and fomenting anti-Semitism. Goebbels forced Jewishartists, musicians, actors, directors and newspaper and magazineeditors into unemployment, and staged a public burning of books thatwere considered ”un-German. Goebbels remained in this post andwas loyal to Hitler until the end of World War II (1939-45). On May1, 1945, the day after Hitler committed suicide, Goebbels and his wifepoisoned their six children and then killed themselves.
