http://www.depuyhipreplacementlawsuit.com/ The hip implant metallosis is one of the many complications that came up after DePuy Orthopedics Inc.’s recall of its Articular Surface Replacement (ASR) hip systems. The several lawsuits that were filed against Johnson & Johnson, DePuy’s mother company, contained among its several allegations, metallosis. Several of these lawsuits have been consolidated into a multidistrict litigation under Judge David A. Katz of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio who called for a status conference of the DePuy hip replacement lawsuit this month.

Defective DePuy Metal-On-Metal Hip Implants Might Result to Heavy Metal Poisoning

  2. 2. The hip implant metallosis is one of the manycomplications that came up after DePuyOrthopedics Inc.’s recall of its Articular SurfaceReplacement (ASR) hip systems. The severallawsuits that were filed against Johnson &Johnson, DePuy’s mother company, containedamong its several allegations, metallosis. Several ofthese lawsuits have been consolidated into amultidistrict litigation under Judge David A. Katz ofthe U.S. District Court for the Northern District ofOhio who called for a status conference of theDePuy hip replacement lawsuit this month.
  3. 3. The metal poisoning of cobalt and chromiumin the soft tissue known as hip implantmetallosis could have a patient feeling painand suffering potentially dangerous sideeffects. The defective design of the metal-on-metal (MoM) ASR hip implants allegedlycauses the heavy metal build-up, particularlyof chromium and cobalt, in the tissue. Areport in the New York Times stated thatorthopedic specialists said that they believedthat the design of the ASR cup, which isshallower than some similar devices, was atthe heart of the implant’s problems.
  4. 4. DePuy had intended a wider range of motion forpatients by designing a shallower cup andremoving the plastic liner from the inside of theimplant. Cobalt and chromium particles flakeoff from the device, as a result of the friction ofthe ball portion of the hip implant against thesocket, and into the soft tissue around the arealeading to metallosis.
  5. 5. Heavy metals cobalt and chromium are used onthe DePuy ASR hip implants because of theirstrength and anti-corrosion properties. Lowlevels of these heavy metals in the body isconsidered safe but when the levels start goingup, it could be toxic for patients because itcould lead to both cobalt and chromiumpoisoning. In cobalt poisoning, experts considerany blood serum concentration at or above sevenmicrograms per millilitre to be dangerous.
  6. 6. Included among the symptoms of cobaltpoisoning are:· Deafness· Cardiomyopathy· Optic nerve / vision problems· Neuropathy· Haemorrhages· Kidney failure· Gastrointestinal problems· Thyroid problems
  7. 7. While no specific concentrations have beenestablished to be considered as dangerous levelsfor chromium poisoning, experts at the MayoClinic Medical Laboratories believe that even lowlevels are concerning, "blood serumconcentrations greater than 1ng/ML in a patientwith Cr-based implant suggest significantprosthesis wear."
  8. 8. Symptoms of chromium poisoning may include:· Acute renal failure· GI haemorrhage· Impaired liver function· Increased risk of cancers
  9. 9. The two complications could be diagnosed via aregular blood test. Affected patients wouldneed to undergo a revision surgery to remove thedefective implants which is causing thepoisoning. The DePuy hip replacement recall isnot enough compensation in the face of thegrave danger that the defective implants pose toa patients’ health.
