Fractional appointment negotiable Classification: Academic Level C Remuneration: A salary package consisting of: $86,936 to $100,243 per annum base salary and $101,715 to $117,284 per annum including employer superannuation of 17% salary. An additional dental loading of $11,688 is payable to staff who are registered as dental practitioners. For staff entitled to 17% employer contributions, UniSuper does not mandate a level of member contribution to superannuation. UQ is a leading source of expertise in the local, national and international dental community and has been a key contributor to achieving effective solutions to contemporary issues and challenges. The School has strong collaborations within and outside the profession of dentistry. As part of the Faculty of Health Sciences, the School of Dentistry employs innovative learning techniques for its undergraduate and postgraduate students and for the dental profession, and participates in interprofessional education opportunities. The School is responsible for education of oral health professionals, through the Bachelor of Oral Health, as well as for dentists, through the Bachelor of Dental Science and specialist post-graduate offerings including the Doctor of Dental Science. The School of Dentistry also has an active and growing cohort of research higher degree students.

The high clinical capabilities of UQ students are well known, and objective benchmarking shows that the UQ dental educational process is at the leading edge both nationally and internationally. The School is unique amongst ANZ dental schools in that it follows an innovative approach to dental education and research. Its leadership is entrepreneurial and very much geared around a private sector mentality, which has been sharpened by professional training in business as well as considerable experience in the private sector. Teaching and Research Academic staff members in the School contribute to the identified research priorities: the diagnosis and prevention of oral disease; advanced technologies and biomaterials; and links between systemic and oral health. Teaching focussed academics are involved in progressing the scholarship of teaching and learning, and play significant roles in program administration, curriculum development and the development and evaluation of new approaches to teaching and learning. Teaching Undergraduate Programs Offered by the School The School offers a five-year undergraduate course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Dental Science (BDSc) which qualifies a graduate to register and practice as a dentist in all Australian States and New Zealand. The BDSc program has a history of some 75 years of producing leaders in the dental profession. The BDSc degree is awarded at pass and honours levels, the latter being a special stream of on-course activities which engage students in formal research over years 4 and 5. The BDSc follows a unique 4+1 educational model which gives the graduating students extensive experience through clinical placements in their fifth year prior to their graduation. The School’s approach to placements has been highly successful and has been copied or adopted by other ANZ dental schools. The School offers the Bachelor of Oral Health (BOralH) degree, which produces graduates who are trained across dental therapy, dental hygiene and health promotion. The School's Oral Health program was the first of its type in the ANZ region, and once again this has been copied or adopted by other ANZ dental schools. Particular strengths of the UQ program are its integration with the early years of the BDSc, its strong focus on building professional identity, and its substantial public health component, features not found in other oral health programs. Employment rates for graduates from the School's two major undergraduate programs are extremely high, and the School has a strong relationship with its Alumni. The School has been in a leading position nationally for teaching quality for several years, as assessed by recent graduates in independent surveys conducted by the Graduate Careers Council of Australia. Based on these data, UQ School of Dentistry graduates are the best prepared for the workplace of any in the country. The School also offers a Bachelor of Dental Studies (BDentSt) program. This can be taken by BDSc students as a one-year intermitting degree after their third year, or by BDSc graduates. It fosters a student's capacity for research and prepares them for subsequently undertaking a PhD or other postgraduate programs.

Postgraduate Research Programs Offered by the School Research higher degrees offered by the School are the Master of Philosophy (MPhil), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), and Doctor of Dental Science (DDSc). The latter is a higher doctorate (post-PhD) and is based on contributions to the international literature over an extended period of time. Students undertaking MPhil and PhD programs are formal members of the School’s research programs, and also contribute to the life and activities of the School through sessional teaching or clinical work. Postgraduate Coursework Programs Offered by the School The School is Australia’s largest single provider of continuing professional development (CPD) courses in the ANZ region, with some 39 courses on offer in 2009. The School has linkages with the Australian Dental Association Queensland Branch (ADAQ) and the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (RACDS) such that particular courses offered by the School are recognized within ADAQ and RACDS educational pathways. The UQ School of Dentistry is an accredited CPD provider. As well as contributing to the School’s CPD program, academic staff of the School feature prominently on the national and international lecture circuits. The UQ Master of Clinical Dentistry (MClinDent) program is a two year part-time program which provides intense exposure to an area of clinical practice, and this forms a pathway which articulates into the professional doctorate, the Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (DClinDent), a three year full time program which is the education pathway for dental specialists. The School has developed a unique ladder progression model from CPD through to the MClinDent and then to the DClinDent, and has formal arrangements with the RACDS for special stream recognition of its DClinDent graduates. Research The UQ School of Dentistry has a proud history of high quality dental and oral research which has impacted on the practice of dentistry and on dental public health both nationally and internationally. For its size, the School performs exceptionally well in benchmarking exercises in terms of publication number and quality compared with international dental schools. The School has three strategic research themes which form the core of its research efforts. These themes drive the development of individual research programs, as an overt strategy for consolidating the School’s research strengths for the future, and building on critical mass so that programs of international quality and complexity of scope can be undertaken. The 3 themes are: • Diagnosis and prevention of oral disease • Dental biomaterials and advanced technologies • Oral and systemic health interactions The School has a number of research programs. These teams comprise senior and junior academics, postdoctoral research fellows, and Research Higher degree and Honours students. Each researcher investigates an aspect of a larger problem with their insights contributing to the resolution of the larger problem under the coordination and guidance of the research program leader. The program leader formulates the overall research agenda, manages the team’s research, and draws together the work of the team. Clinical operations The School’s clinical operations, located in the Brisbane central business district, represent Australia’s largest private patient treatment facility, with some 100 chairs. The School offers a complete range of levels of care. The School independently owns and runs its own clinical facilities. It is currently involved in a range of building projects for satellite clinics in suburban and rural areas in Queensland to extend its base of operations, and has developed formal links with a large private clinic and with a large public sector clinic for progressing its agendas in both postgraduate clinical education and in research. The School is currently building the UQ Herston Oral Health Centre, a world class dental facility with some 187 chairs on a major tertiary hospital campus. This will be funded by a grant of some $ 104 million from the Australian government to UQ to support this project, and by additional funding from UQ and from Queensland Health. The Centre will be sited on UQ land, and will be run and operated by the School as the major hub of its operations from 2012 onwards.

The School’s clinics provide treatments to fee-paying patients as well as to some patients eligible for treatment within the public dental services, the latter under a service agreement with Queensland Health. The School’s enormous exposure to fee-paying patients is a unique aspect of its situation compared with other ANZ and international dental schools. Students and staff of the School make a significant contribution to the treatment of patients within the public dental sector across Queensland, at hospital, community and school clinics. The School has a very close working relationship with Queensland Health, as well as with the Australian Dental Association and the dental profession as a whole. All of the School’s programs are designed to ensure a smooth transition from University studies to the world of professional practice. Many of the staff of the School work within the profession as general practitioners or specialists, and this brings a "real world" flavour to all of the activities of the School. ‘Engagement’ is a valued and legitimate component of normal School and University business. Engagement enhances the School’s reputation and in particular its position in research, technology transfer and commercialization. For these reasons, the School has entered into an increasing number of mutually beneficial partnerships to address matters of interest to business and industry. Its position of strength, size, and most of all, quality, sets the tone for how the School engages with the dental industry. Some of these engagements as focussed primarily on research while others are focussed on clinical teaching. The School has engaged with industry in mutually beneficial ways to support and enhance its current and future research programs, through Cooperative Research Centres (CRC), industry-funded appointments, technology transfer and commercialization activities, contract research and research consultancies, industry linkage grants, arrangements for supply or loan of specialized equipment for research, and donation of materials to support specific research projects. Each of these engagements around research is subject to specific written agreements, so that the obligations of both parties are clear. The School hosts a major node of the Cooperative Research Centre for Oral Health Sciences, which supports three of its five large research teams. DUTY STATEMENT Primary Purpose of Position This appointment offers a unique opportunity for highly experienced dentists with a passion for clinical dentistry to contribute to the School’s clinical teaching and learning, and to enhance the curriculum of its teaching programs, in addition to pursuing research interests within the School’s defined themes. The appointee will be expected to contribute to the further development of undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching, and to program curriculum and course development. Involvement in administration will also be expected, as well as clinical service work, as a part of the mix of duties for teaching and research academics in a clinical discipline.

Duties Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Teaching and Learning • Teach and contribute to programs offered by the School of Dentistry (in line with position descriptors, which detail contributions to face-to-face and organisational, development and leadership activities expected in teaching). • Undertake course and program coordination. • Screen and select patients for clinical teaching activities. • Undertake reflection, review and continuous improvement of curricula, teaching resources and teaching approaches. • Apply new ideas about teaching and new knowledge regarding best clinical practice into teaching practice. • Developing, practising, evaluating, and communicating improved pedagogies, learning processes, curricula, policies and learning materials. • Maintain high level involvement in activities which relate to training and standards in dentistry. • Develop and apply teaching and learning practices which breaks new ground, are innovative, can be replicated and elaborated, are documented, and are subject to peer review. Research • Undertake research which integrates with the School’s defined research themes. • Supervise students undertaking research, in conjunction with other members of staff. Community Service (Engagement) • Foster the School’s and Faculty’s relations with industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community. • Undertake clinical practice, including patient screening, which support clinical operations as assigned. SELECTION CRITERIA Qualifications Essential • A dental qualification which allows full general registration with the Dental Board of Queensland as a dentist, without conditions. • A history of active involvement in continuing professional development activities over the past 5 years. • Postgraduate qualifications such as a fellowship, advanced training in a clinical discipline and/or a postgraduate research qualification. Experience Essential • At least 7 years full-time or equivalent experience in clinical dental/specialist practice. • Experience with undergraduate and/or postgraduate student supervision in a clinical teaching environment. • Demonstrated activity in research. Desirable • Clinical practice across both the public and private sectors.
