Basically to provide readiness and ensure fitness. This slide says it in terms a civilian would understand. Bottom line: Ensure Dental Care to all those entrusted to our care: AD Sailors Marines and their Family members! Talk about the “humanitarian mission” on this slide, as well as our mission with the Marines and the surface fleet.

This is applicants vs applications. Guessing that each applicant for the more popular residencies applies to an average of 5 different programs, you can deduce that the actual numbers of applicants (compare apples to apples) is:
This slide shows the average stipend paid and the average cost to the resident for specialty training.
This slide shows the differences between stipend and costs to the resident, when compared to an active duty officer who is also going through training. Add in the other benefits that the AD officer has, and it’s a really good deal.
