First completed project likely to have impact beyond Center grant <ul><li>Mertz and Grumbach’s pilot project: </li></ul><ul><li>Critique of federal criteria for defining dental shortage areas, known as Dental Health Professional Shortage Areas (DHPSAs) . </li></ul><ul><li>The report found fundamental flaws in the methodology and use of the criteria, upon which California bases many of its workforce programs. </li></ul>
  7. 7. <ul><li>In California, there is a shortage of providers willing to treat underserved populations. </li></ul><ul><li>California is one of the most diverse regions of the country. </li></ul><ul><li>Dentistry is the least diverse of all the health professions. </li></ul>
  8. 8. New funding received from California Policy Research Center This project (Mertz et al.) will study and quantify the effect of different approaches to recruiting oral health care providers to underserved areas in California.
