  2. 2. Introduction to DDR  Foot – eye coordination  Hit arrows when they match up on screen  We use IR sensors  One song, 4 difficulty levels
  3. 3.  Dance Dance Revolution has a history of helping students lose weight.  Games are on the rise and this is one way that we as physical educators can get the students moving .  Let’s get the students in shape and have fun doing Dance Dance revolution?  Dance Dance Revolution provides very good exercise, and even has an exercise program within the game that tells you how many calories you burn per song, and how long you work out.
  4. 4. Game Overview  IR Sensor Info determines location of user’s feet  Control Unit controls game flow  Audio handles song representation as arrows and audio playback  Video produces display viewed by user
  5. 5. Data Flow IR Sensor Info Control Unit Video Audio
  6. 6. Video ~ Menu Screen
  7. 7. Video ~ In-Game Mode
  8. 8. Video ~ End-Game Mode
  9. 9. Infrared Sensors  Setup: -3x3 grid of sensors allows location of foot to be found  Hardware: -Sharp GP2Y0D02YK IR Sensor - 31" Trigger -Produces digital output indicating if beam is interrupted 30” IR1 IR2 IR3 IR4 IR5 IR6
  10. 10. Control Unit  Two main functions: – Game mode – Scoring  Game mode: – Sends a 2-bit signal to determine mode  Scoring: – Calculates score based on how close arrows are when position is reached – Accuracy level displayed during game, overall score given at end. Reset Location! IR1 IR2 IR3 IR4 IR5 IR6
  11. 11. Audio  Audio Playback – Song stored in ZBT memory – Played through speakers using AC’97 codec  Representation of song as arrows – Row of arrows represented as a 4-bit number – Each row corresponds to a beat of the song – [left arrow, up arrow, down arrow, right arrow] – If arrow represented by a 1, then it will appear in the row beat row 1 0101 2 1000 n 1001
  12. 12.  DDR is basically a dancing game. You select a song, and then arrows pop up on the screen while the song plays. The object of the game is to step on the arrows on your dance pad (which corresponds to the game), as they move down/up the screen. There are not really any rules for this game-just try your best to step on the arrows, and you’ll get better in time.
  13. 13.  Many schools use DDR as a physical education activity in gym,and in Norway.  Caltech allows its students to use DDR to fulfill part of its physical education requirement, as students may design their own fitness program.  University of kansas (KU) has a class for Dance Dance Revolution open for students to take as a 1 credit hour course.
  14. 14.  Facilitates self-awareness  Enhances self-esteem  Reduces anxiety  Encourages reminiscing  Maintains and/or increases mobility  Enhances body-mind connectivity  Focuses on non-verbal communication as method of therapy  Alternative method of therapy if traditional talk therapy has not been effective ADVANTAGES OF DDR
