The Oasis of Dubai

  1. 1. Welcome to the Oasis of Dubai / Ali El Jishi / We are privileged to live & work in the "Oasis" of Dubai where we are reminded daily of the beauty and success of this magnificent city. Dubai today ranks as one of the top 10 cities in the world and understandably there is a huge demand by young professionals to relocate here & enjoy the dynamism and safety of this city. On the flip side the attraction of Dubai is now becoming an HR nightmare ! As all of us who are in HR know more isn’t always better. Sitting here in Dubai's free zone in JLT & as I enter my 20th year in HR I am blown away daily by the number of people applying to each open vacancy - 100 within the hour; 1000 within a day; vacancy withdrawn by the end of the week.. Common Sense would dictate the more CVs - the more options - the better. Perhaps this principle would apply in "yo sushi" but unfortunately not in our game, as this is precisely what starts the vicious circle. The poor "HR Executive" normally a newly to HR, is handed the pleasure of selecting from the 1000 CVs, with all the good will in the world this new exec (what a fancy title) descends into a game of classification, commencing with "pick the pretty picture" to "pick the easy to read CV" and finally surrendering to "pick the no of pages“  This of course is tongue & cheek but not far off the reality. The circle then passes to the HR Manager/Director etc who only has the time to vet the 3 CV’s before having to allocate 3 hours for interviews (go forbid) ..... Then we are back to the beginning of the circle where 997 candidates are left frustrated half of which won't apply again (the good skilled ones) and of course the vacancy re opens the following month. See, with the all the advancements in technology we have automated many of the processes in HR, but there is one that can not be automated, HR stands for Human Relations not Human Resources for humans will never be resource. The oasis of Dubai needs top talent and top talent needs a human interaction & selection. See you in the oasis. Ali El Jishi
