• Give students class set of Lab reading, questions, and instructions (all one document)
• Students use a page in their notebooks and fold it in half. The front of the page should be labeled “Layers of the earth” (this goes on the front of the page, with the fold facing to the right)
• This goes on the front of the folded page, with the fold on the right
• Students should open the page that they labeled and divide it into four equal sections
• Teacher-point to different layers and cold-call students to make sure they can all name each one
• ### 9/9/11 and 9/10/11

1. 1. 9/9/11LEQ: Why is the inside of the Earth divided into layers?
(Reminder: Complete Sentences!!)
1. What is the science class big goal?
2. Why will achieving our big goal help you to live the life you choose for yourself?
3. What is one thing you are going to do to make a 3 or 4 on the science EOG this year?
4. Make a list (bullets are fine) of everything you know about the word “Density.” If you don’t know anything, take a guess at what you think it might be.
(Reminder: sit silently after you finish!)
2. 2. Today’s LEQ: Why is the inside of the Earth divided into layers?
By the end of today, you should be able to…
1. Define Density.
2. Explain the difference between objects that are more dense and objects that are the least dense.
3. Identify objects that are more dense and less dense in comparison to each other.
3. 3. What do we call this?
4. 4. What do we call this?
5. 5. Daily Vocabulary:
Density
Inner Core
Outer Core
Mantle
Crust
6. 6. Lab/Group Work Expectations
Importance of reading ALL INSTRUCTIONS.
Assign DIRECTION CAPTAIN.
Assign partner numbers.
All work goes in notebook
Collaboration vs. Plagiarism
Consequences for behavior that does not meet expectations.
7. 7. Density Classwork
Density Lab and Worksheet—Class Set
8. 8. Layers of the Earth Foldable
LAYERS OF THE EARTH
Complete as a class after lab is finished
9. 9. CRUST
MARKER/
COLORED PENCIL PROCEDURE
MANTLE
OUTER CORE
INNER CORE
10. 10. CRUST
MANTLE
OUTER CORE
INNER CORE
11. 11. LEAST DENSE
LEAST PRESSURE
COOLEST
MOST PRESSURE
MOST DENSE
HOTTEST
12. 12. HOW CAN WE REMEMBER THIS?
Hotter, Denser, Most Pressure  CORE
Cooler, less dense, less pressure  CRUST
The crust is always LESS of everything!
13. 13. GROUP PRACTICE Name That Layer!
With your partner: write down which layer you think the clue is talking about
Yes, you may use your notes!
When I count to 3, hold up your answer
We are shooting for 100% mastery
14. 14. Who Am I?
I am the outermost layer where life exists.
15. 15. Who Am I?
I am the layer above the mantle.
16. 16. Who Am I?
I am at the center of the Earth
17. 17. Who Am I?
I am the coolest layer
18. 18. Who Am I?
I am the layer with higher pressure than the outer core
19. 19. Who Am I?
I am the LEAST dense layer
20. 20. Who Am I?
I am the hottest layer of the earth
21. 21. Who Am I?
I am directly below the mantle
22. 22. Who Am I?
I am the layer directly above the inner core
23. 23. Who Am I?
I am the layer with the highest amount of pressure
24. 24. Who Am I?
I am the layer with lower pressure than the mantle
25. 25. NAME THAT LAYER!
26. 26. Summarizer: Complete sentences!!
What is the difference between objects with HIGH density and objects with LOW density?
Which layer of the earth is the most dense? How do you know?
Which layer of the earth is the least dense? How do you know?
Why is the earth separated into layers? Why do they not all just mix up together?
*REMINDER—DO BEHAVIOR AND MASTERY!*
