  2. 2. <ul><li>Increased dopamine activity in the brain is found in schizophrenic individuals. </li></ul><ul><li>People with schizophrenia are likely to have additional conditions (major depression and anxiety disorders) </li></ul><ul><li>Occurs equally in males and females </li></ul><ul><ul><li>appears earlier in men. </li></ul></ul>
  3. 3. Symptoms <ul><li>Auditory hallucinations </li></ul><ul><li>Paranoid or bizarre delusions </li></ul><ul><li>Disorganized speech and thinking </li></ul><ul><li>Social or occupational dysfunction </li></ul>

Types <ul><li>Paranoid </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Delusions and hallucinations are present but thought disorder and disorganized behavior are absent </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Disorganized </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Thought disorder present along with a lack of emotions </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Cationic </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Almost immobile or exhibit agitated, purposeless movement </li></ul></ul>

Diagnosis <ul><li>The most widely used standardized criteria for diagnosing schizophrenia come from DSM-IV. </li></ul><ul><li>Diagnosis is based on the self-reported experiences of the person. </li></ul><ul><li>Clinical assessment by a psychiatrist, clinical psychologist or mental health professional. </li></ul>
  6. 6. Causes <ul><li>Factors include </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Genetics </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Prenatal </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Social </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Substance Abuse </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Drugs such as Amphetamines, hallucinogens, and marijuana. </li></ul></ul></ul>

Treatment <ul><li>Medications </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Antipsychotic medications (chlorpromazine) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>type of drug works by suppressing dopamine activity </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Psychotherapy </li></ul><ul><li>Electroconvulsive therapy and psychosurgery </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Not recommended, rarely used. </li></ul></ul>
  8. 8. Positive and Negative Symptoms <ul><li>Positive symptoms - delusions, auditory hallucinations, and thought disorder. </li></ul><ul><li>Negative symptoms - flat or blunted affect and emotion, lack social relationships, and lack of motivation </li></ul>
  9. 9. Confusions <ul><li>Schizophrenia has often been confused with other illnesses </li></ul><ul><ul><li>bipolar disorder </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>borderline personality disorder </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>drug intoxication </li></ul></ul>
  10. 10. Look-alikes <ul><li>Some symptoms may seem to indicate schizophrenia, when it is not. Such as: </li></ul><ul><li>metabolic disturbance </li></ul><ul><li>Syphilis </li></ul><ul><li>Epilepsy </li></ul><ul><li>brain injuries </li></ul>
  11. 11. <ul><li>Taking certain medications can help suppress the symptoms of schizophrenia. There are an abundant amount of pills I have to take. </li></ul>
  12. 12. <ul><li>Schizophrenia often causes hallucinations of others who aren’t in reality. Sometimes I see multiplies of myself, telling myself to make certain decisions. </li></ul>
  13. 13. <ul><li>Sometimes I feel depressed, as if I am all alone and no one understands me. </li></ul>
  14. 14. <ul><li>Scan of my brain, deficit of my brain will continue on within the next years. I start to worry… </li></ul>
  15. 15. <ul><li>I hear many voices all the time, telling me what to do. I want them out of my mind. </li></ul>
  16. 16. <ul><li>Sometimes I don’t feel like myself..I feel like I’m watching myself on a movie screen </li></ul>
  17. 17. <ul><li>I’m so confused, I become frustrated with myself. Why is this happening. </li></ul>
  18. 18. <ul><li>I feel so many eyes on me. Everyone is looking at me. Is it because they think I’m a freak? I’m paranoid. </li></ul>
  19. 19. <ul><li>I always ask myself questions. They are left unanswered because no one has the answers. </li></ul>
  20. 20. <ul><li>I believe things that are unreal. But it keeps me from going crazy. If only I can just believe what I want to believe without others telling me what reality is. </li></ul>
