Schools being left largely to their own devices to meet the costs of careers education and guidance for young people. TES figures 29/4/11 suggest - Nearly four in ten schools are planning to reduce staff numbers over the next 12 months as headteachers struggle to balance their books, according to a survey of senior leaders. A joint survey by heads’ union the NAHT and The TES has revealed that 37 per cent of schools are expecting to see their staff headcount fall. One “conservative” analysis suggests that this will see the overall national figure for school staff drop by over 17,000. Local Authorities being told there will be no more guidance to LAs or to schools. Priority to establish a competitive market and to disengage it from govt, where possible. Questions about accountability - the destinations analysis will be published as part of school league tables will be the key – but questions about how that might look suggests that it was not much more than the current annual return ... (probably worse as confusion reigns vis a vis who will do the tracking in the future?) CRM / CCIS? Colleges being supported through LSIS materials online whilst also experiencing cuts in staffing – growing evidence of CEG curriculum affected by this. HEI under increased pressure to focus on students’ employability.

Reference: rising unemployment 1 in 5 and rising…… The latest official statistics showed that youth unemployment rose by 66,000 to 965,000 in the three months to the end of December, the highest level since comparable records began in 1992. The record number of just under a million includes students in full-time education who may be looking for part-time work. Princes trust – enough young people to fill every football stadium in the Premier League. The unemployment level for 16 to 24-year-olds not in full-time education was 691,000 - the highest since 1994. There are also 793,000 people in the 16 to 24 age group who are economically inactive, and are not in full time education. They do not appear in the unemployment figures as, by definition, they are they are not looking for work. CBI ‘hot of the press’ - Inadequate Careers advice in schools and Colleges - Poor Literacy and Numeracy skills-means remedial training Employers are concerned with the basic skills levels of school and college leavers, the CBI / EDI annual Education & Skills survey 2011 revealed on Monday Careers Advice : The survey shows that young people are not in a position to make informed choices about their future career because of inadequate advice in schools and colleges. Only 6% of businesses are confident that advice is good enough, while 64% think advice must improve. There is an appetite among employers to play a greater role in delivering careers advice, with 54% willing to do more, rising to 66% of large firms. Lack of Employability Skills Companies also found school and college leavers lacking in important employability skills, with 69% saying they have inadequate business and customer awareness, and over half (55%) experiencing weaknesses in school leavers’ self-management skills. Two thirds (70%) want to see these made a top priority at school and college. Employability skills are the single most important consideration for 82% of businesses when recruiting graduates, followed by degree subject (68%) and relevant work experience (67%). Levels of employer satisfaction with the employability skills of graduates are higher than for school and college leavers, but 70% of employers say that university students need to do more to prepare themselves to be effective in the workplace.
