  • Current IT architectures have to build in excess capacity to anticipate computing demand spikes throughout the year. For instance an online retailer will experience their peak computing demand 3 months out of the year – Oct-Dec – or the holiday season. During the other 9 months of the year, this computing power is underutilized and potentially costing more in power and cooling costs than necessary.
  • However, when an organization can leverage the cloud for these capacity spikes, the amount of underused resources is smoothed out and natural efficiencies are realized, therefore reducing the amount of total costs associated with this architecture.

  • You may have heard the term “Software as a Service” or SaaS. There are several “as a service” terms associated with cloud computing: Infrastructure as a Service, or IaaS, is where you pay for infrastructure resources such as servers, storage devices, and network equipment. Platform as a Service, or PaaS, is where you pay for a platform that includes an operating system and application stack. PaaS is inclusive of IaaS. Software as a Service, or SaaS, is where you pay to use an application. SaaS is inclusive of both PaaS and IaaS.An example of PaaS is Windows Azure.An example of SaaS is Microsoft Exchange Online.

    9. 9. • The data centre – one of the largest construction projects in the Republic of Ireland over last 12 months • has taken approximately one million man-hours to complete and involved a workforce close to 2,100 at peak.
    10. 10. • Making use of the low ambient air temperatures in Ireland, the facility uses „free air‟ cooling almost exclusively. • This means the operating environment can be maintained without mechanical or refrigerated cooling systems for over 95% of the time. • Mechanical cooling typically represents ~38% of the power consumed in traditional data centres.
    11. 11. • This cooling system eliminates the necessity for chilled water cooling systems, used in traditional data centres. This saves ~18 million litres of water each month.

De opkomst van cloud computing brengt hier verandering in. Alles wordt flexibel, vraagt niet langer om activa en is beschikbaar zodra het nodig is. Cloud computing vormt een uitgelezen kans voor IT-afdelingen die van plan zijn te reorganiseren: ze helpt namelijk om grote investeringen in back-end infrastructuur en software (en alles daartussen) niet meer te hoeven doen. De cloud zet de traditionele industrie rond IT-diensten op zijn kop. “Cloud computing betekent grote verandering in de manier waarop bedrijven IT- services betalen en benaderen”, zegt Susan Tan, onderzoeksdirecteur bij Gartner. Gartner voorspelt dat over twee jaar 20 procent van bedrijven wereldwijd nauwelijks tot geen IT-activa zullen bezitten. Cloud verandert de wereld – voor leveranciers van allerlei allooi, van traditionele onshore en offshore IT-dienstleveranciers tot system integrators en nieuwe spelers in nichemarkten.
