1. 1. By Kara DeFrias | INSYS 527 | Summer 2006
 2. 2. Stop the Presses!

Congratulations, you’ve been hired by

Rolling Stone magazine! As their newest

features writer, your first assignment is to

cover the Southern California leg of the

Dave Matthews Band tour this summer.

The boys will be rocking San Diego,

Orange County, and Hollywood.

You have never visited the Left Coast,

though, so you’re really excited to see all

the sights in addition to covering the band.

You decide to do some pre-trip investigative

digging in preparation for a whirlwind

California adventure!

Stop the Presses! home
 3. 3. Your Assignment

Since you are an East Coast native, you are

pretty clueless as to how to get around sunny

Southern California. Your editor told you to

enjoy the sites and sounds while you’re out

there, so there’s a little wiggle room for some

R&R in between each show.

In order to be organized during your trip,

you need to create a travel booklet detailing your

itinerary – complete with maps, directions and

destinations – to keep as a handy reference as you

cruise the California coast.

(You may want to watch Almost Famous in preparation.)

Your Assignment home
 4. 4. Creative Direction

Find out which cities the band is playing in Southern California.

Reserve all your travel needs.

Map out point-to-point directions for your entire trip.

Have some fun ! Research three cool things to do in each town.

In Word or PowerPoint, create an itinerary booklet with all the above information in it.

Creative Direction home Helpful Links *

Google .:. 5. 5. Fact-checking

What airlines fly nonstop from Philadelphia to Orange County?

Name the major freeway that goes through all three areas.

List the cities you will be visiting – in chronological order.

What are the names of the venues?

List at least 3 approved items to bring into the Hollywood Bowl.

How many miles from the Coors Amphitheatre to Los Angeles?

Describe your favorite off-hours activity on your trip.

Is it humanly possible to get from San Diego to Hell-ay in 1.5 hours during rush hour?

Bonus question: What’s a dancing nancy?

Fact-checking home * View the answers .
 6. 6. That’s a Wrap!

Wow! Rolling Stone was really impressed by the

booklet you created detailing your SoCal itinerary.

In fact, your editor wants these booklets created for

all reporters who travel to cover a story – and they

are going to use yours as the template!

From your email, it sounds like you had a great

trip, too! Hopefully you learned how to book

your own airline, car, and hotel reservations;

listened to some good music; and found

some cool things to do in SoCal. Wait a

minute...did you even come back? I think

you’re still soaking up the fun in the sun!

That’s okay, just make sure you use your

newfound knowledge to make it back

from the Left Coast in time to review

the Tony Awards.

That’s a Wrap! home My SoCal Trip
