FOUR WISE THINGS
We live in a world where physical
suffering is a reality. Not only man but all of
the animal creation also suffers and that is a
bigger problem for some people. They want to
know why animals should suffer pain. But suf-
fering is a necessary thing. To be free of pain would mean be-
ing free of a physical body or free of a nervous system. But this
would be disastrous. In such a case an animal would not know
when to eat (there would be no hunger pains) and it would not
know to stop running when hurt. Pain serves as a useful pur-
pose. It serves as a warning that something is wrong.
But if it true that animals must suffer, why then do ani-
mals need to exist? There are a number of reasons why their
existence is needed. First, many animals are a valuable source
of food for mankind. Others provide mankind with clothing ei-
ther from their skins or wool. But the one factor for the exis-
tence of animals that I want to mention is that they provide God
with a medium for teaching many spiritual truths to man. For
example Jesus spoke of such in the Sermon on the Mount
when He said “Look at the birds of the air, for they neither
sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Fa-
ther feeds them. Are you not of more value than
they?” (Mt. 6:26). Jesus used the birds as a means for teach-
ing us the need to trust in God and not to worry. But there are
numerous such lessons to be learned from the animal creation.
In the book of Proverbs we are given lessons from four things
that God created. In the King James Version at Proverbs
30:24-28 we read: “There be four things which are little
upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise: 25 The ants
are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the
summer;
26 The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their
houses in the rocks; 27 The locusts have no king, yet go
they forth all of them by bands; 28 The spider taketh hold
with her hands, and is in kings' palaces.” Let us notice four
lessons to learn from the creations of God.
First, we need to learn the need for preparation. The ant
is given to us as an example the need to prepare for the future.
Earlier in Proverbs 6:6 we are instructed to “Go to the ant,
thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: 7 Which
having no guide, overseer, or ruler, 8 Provideth her meat in
the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.” From
the ant we are to learn the need for preparation for future
events. The ant knows that winter is coming and food must be
prepared and stored for future use. Certainly Joseph under-
stood the value of such. When he was in Egypt Pharaoh had a
dream that no one could interpret for him. However, God re-
vealed the interpretation to Joseph that there would be seven
years of plenty followed by seven years of famine. So Joseph
told Pharaoh, “Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint offi-
cers over the land, and take up the fifth part of the land of
Egypt in the seven plenteous years. 35 And let them gather
all the food of those good years that come, and lay up corn
under the hand of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the
cities. 36 And that food shall be for store to the land
against the seven years of famine, which shall be in the
land of Egypt; that the land perish not through the fam-
ine” (Gen. 41:34-36).
Likewise Noah, “being warned of God of things not
seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving
of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and
became heir of the righteousness which is by faith” (Heb.
11:7). Noah was made aware of the coming judgment of God
and he wisely took time to prepare for it by building the ark to
insure that he and his family would be well prepared for that
time.
