Christian Ethics in the Workplace
By: Tim Shoemaker
In the Bible, Christians are required to have the
highest of ethical standards in their work. In his letter to
Titus Paul instructed Christians saying, “And let us also
learn to maintain good works for necessary uses,
that they be not unfruitful” (Titus 3:14 KJV). The New
English Bible renders this verse as, “Our own people
must be taught to engage in honest employment to
produce the necessities of life; they must not be un-
productive.” The idea is that as Christians we must be
involved only in such works that are themselves lawful
and good. We must be sure that our actions in our work
are honest. We must be honest with our employer, our
employee and our customer.
Listen to what Paul had to say to the church at
Thessalonica. “And that you study to be quiet, and to
do your own business, and to work with you own
hands, as we commanded you; That ye may walk
honestly toward them that are without, and that ye
may have lack of nothing” (I Thess. 4:11, 12). “Nor
did we eat anyone’s bread without paying for it, but
with labor and hardship we kept working night and
day so that we might not be a burden to any of
you” (II Thess. 3:8). “For we hear that some among
you are leading an undisciplined life, doing no work
at all, but acting like busybodies. Now such persons
we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to
work in quiet and eat their own bread” (II Thess. 3:11,
12). It’s not just that Christians are expected to work to
provide for themselves but that we to be disciplined in
our work. Christians need to have the right motives for
their honest work. One man wrote that he was tired of
the rudeness of the customers where he worked, so he
would charge them extra or not bag one item they had
bought to get even with them. He was frustrated, but that
was not the solution to the problem. How are we to be-
have in such situations? Listen again to the apostle Paul
as he instructs the church at Ephesus. “Servants, be
obedient to them that are your masters according to
the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of
your heart, as unto Christ; Not with eyeservice, as
menpleasers; but as servants of Christ, doing the
will of God from the heart; With good will doing ser-
vice, as to the Lord, and not to men:” (Eph. 6:5-7). He
reminded the brethren in Colossae, “And whatsoever
ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto
men” (Col. 3:22, 23). Then again to the brethren in
Ephesus Paul declared, “Let him that stole steal not
more: but rather let him labour, working with his
hands the thing which is good, that he may have to
give to him that needeth” (Eph. 4:28).
