Today’s Routine
Routine can be defined as a customary or regular course of procedure. Commonplace
tasks, chores, or duties as must be done regularly or at specified intervals; typical or eve-
ryday activity. Some might even consider routine as mundane or ordinary. How many in
the past have allowed routine to be considered as cause for boredom and therefore a de-
fining reason for droll monotony?
That was before the pandemic. That was before we heard statements like “the new-
normal” and we shudder to think of that acceptance. We only want what we used to do.
We only desire what was once commonplace. Our masked faces long for the routine, that
ironically, once left us long in the face. I will not be unhappy with ordinary. I will no
longer be ungrateful for consistency.
So, may we learn our lessons, and thank God for this day He has given us. I heard a
prayer recently given that thanked God for today, because we had never seen it before. He
thanked God for this day because, “We will never see it again!” This gives me cause for
celebration regardless of routine, regardless of inconvenience, even regardless of tragedy.
God has given us a purpose today.
“This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day that the Lord has
made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Save us, we pray, O Lord! O Lord, we pray, give us
success! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! We bless you from the house
of the Lord” (Psalm 118:23-26).
“Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to
fall away from the living God.But exhort one another every day, as long as it is
called ‘today,’ that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. For we
have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the
end. As it is said, ‘Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebel-
lion’” (Hebrews 3:12-15)
So, allow your routine to be one of thanksgiving for each day that comes. May our routine
be to allow God’s Word, and His hand, to soften our hearts. May this be

A Successful Church
We began this study by suggesting that if the church is to
be successful the absent need to show up. Too many
congregations have a low percentage of its members
attending regularly. The Sunday evening attendance in
many instances is only about half of that for the morning
services. Why is attendance so important? Why should
we attend?
First we should attend because it is a command.
The author of the letter to the Hebrews wrote to those
Jewish Christians and encouraged them to faithful wor-
ship attendance. “And let us consider one another in
order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsak-
ing the assembling of ourselves together, as is the
manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so
much the more as you see the Day approach-
ing” (Heb. 10:25). It was the practice of those Christians
to gather regularly on the first day of the week. They
gathered together to “lay something aside, storing up
as he may prosper” (I Cor. 16:2). They gathered to-
gether “to break bread” [partake of the Lord’s Supper]
(Acts 20:7). Brother Burton Coffman pointed out in his
commentary on Hebrews that Pliny wrote to the Emperor
Trajan to report on the actions of the Christians of whom
he said, “On an appointed day they had been accus-
tomed to meet before daybreak." Faithful Christians have
always followed the commands and the approved exam-
ples of the apostles to regularly assemble on the first day
of the week to worship God. When we abandon obedi-
ence to this command of God we have left the way that
pleases God.
Secondly, we need to be present that we might be
taught and gain the knowledge that we need of God’s will
for us. Peter closed his second epistle with these words,
“You therefore, beloved, since you know this before-
hand, beware lest you also fall from your own stead-
fastness, being led away with the error of the wicked;
18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord
and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both
now and forever. Amen” (II Peter 3:17, 18). In the
opening chapter of this same epistle Peter had instructed
these Christians saying, “But also for this very reason,
giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue
knowledge” (II Peter 1:5). When Paul wrote to Timothy
he told him “Till I come, give attention to reading, to
exhortation, to doctrine” (I Tim. 4:13). The Revised
Standard Version and the New American Standard Bible
translate this as give attention to the “public reading of
Scripture” (NASB). We need to be in attendance at the
worship hours to study God’s word. If we, as the church,
are going to be successful, then the absent among us
must show up!
