A Note From the Harp
The Way of the Honeybee
How do we know the way of the honey-
bee?
It gathers and toils, it focuses sleeplessly.
In rain or in sunshine it fulfills its task
Without her work there is no life to be
had.
Yet one bee is nothing without its queen
A bee alone is lost; upon the hive they lean.
As one body they work together
To fulfill their purpose, their nectar.
As one swarm they collect and labor
May their example point us to our Savior.
In rain or in sunshine we must fulfill our task
Our work brings life to the world downcast
We all strive to work hard but does it ever seem enough?
There are still souls in need of the truth of God’s love.
Alone we cannot make the difference that is desired.
Together we make up the swarm, the spiritual empire.
May we be busy bees in His Kingdom, His Church,
And none “bee” left alone to strive without nurture
We remember we are nothing without our King
We must work, never shirk, till we taste death’s sting.
Together may we gather and toil and focus sleeplessly
May we learn from the way of the honeybee.
And may we all Bee Kind

“Save Yourselves”
In our second article we were discussing the fact that
man has a part to play in his salvation. Peter told those
on Pentecost to “Save yourselves from this untoward
generation” (Acts 2:40). We are saved by grace but it is
through faith (Eph. 2:8). We must obey the teaching of
grace in order to be saved by grace (Titus 2:11, 12).
Jesus is our Savior (Lk. 2:11; John 4:42; Acts 5:31;
Eph. 5:23; Phil. 3:20 etc.). Jesus is the Savior of all men
potentially but He is the Savior in reality of all those who
will obey Him. The writer of the letter to the Hebrews
said of Jesus, “Though he were a Son, yet learned he
obedience by the things which he suffered; 9 And being
made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation
unto all them that obey him” (Heb. 5:8, 9). When the
Bible talks about the grace of God it is comprehensive in
that in includes all that God has done to provide for
man’s salvation. It includes the death of Jesus that was
necessary for our salvation and the revealing of His will
(the Bible) to mankind so that we could know His plan
for our salvation. Likewise the faith that saves us is com-
prehensive. It includes all that man must do to be saved
from his sins. It includes not only our believing in Jesus
but our repenting of our sins (John 8:24), our confessing
Jesus before men (Matthew 10:32) and our being im-
mersed in water for the forgiveness of our sins (Acts
2:38).
How were the people to whom Peter commanded
“save yourselves,” saved? First we notice that they re-
ceived the word. The next verse says, “Then they that
gladly received his word were baptized: and the same
day there were added unto them about three thousand
souls” (Acts 2:41). All who would be saved today must
receive the word of God for it is the power of God to sal-
vation (Rom. 1:16). Also James tells us to “to lay apart
all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive
with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save
your souls” (Js. 1:21). They had been told that Jesus was
both Lord and Christ (Acts 2:36) and they believed that
He was (Acts 2:37). Secondly, they were told to repent
and be baptized for the remission of their sins (Acts 2:38)
and they complied with that command (Acts 2:41).
The expression “for remission of sins” does not
mean “because of” but “in order to obtain.” When Jesus
instituted the Lord’s Supper He declared of the fruit of
the vine, “For this is my blood of the new testament,
which is shed for many for the remission of
sins” (Matthew 26:28). For whatever reason Jesus shed
His blood, it is for that same reason that we are to be
baptized. He shed His blood in order that we might have
the remission of our sins.
