But instead Paul tells the church to, Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!” Christianity is to be marked by the joy it brings to its people. The Christian should be identified by the Bible in his hand, the spring in his step and the smile on his lips. God’s joy given to us helps us through our times of trouble. In the time of Nehemiah, when the exiles had returned from Babylonian captivity, Ezra read the Law of God to the people. The people began to weep when they heard the law, because they realized that they had not been obedient to God’s will. So Nehemiah “…said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength” (Neh. 8:10). Another word of encouragement is seen in the sixth verse when Paul wrote, “Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God” (4:6). “In nothing be anxious” (ASV). Such anxiety shows a lack of trust in God’s care. Instead of being anx- ious, Paul says that we are to pray. Pray to God about our problems and worries and then forget about it. This is what we see in the example of Hannah. Hannah was tormented by the fact that she was not able to have chil- dren. Her rival, Peninnah, “provoked her sore, to make her fret, because Jehovah had shut up her womb” (I Sam. 1:6). So Hannah prayed to God saying, “O LORD of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head” (1 Sam. 1:11). Eli watched as she prayed. He saw her lips moving but heard no sound so he thought that she was drunk and he rebuked her. Hannah ex- plained to him what she was praying about, “Then Eli answered and said, ‘Go in peace; and the God of Is- rael grant thy petition that thou hast asked of him.’ 18 And she said, ‘Let thy handmaid find favor in thy sight.’ So the woman went her way, and did eat; and her countenance was no more sad” (I Sam. 1:17, 18). The result of such a prayer life is that we receive the “peace of God that passes understanding.” We can receive the “peace of God” only when we have made “peace with God.” “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Rom. 5:1). Such peace can be found only in Christ (Phil. 4:7 ASV). Thank you A special thank you to our summer interns, Aaron Dykes, Nolan Couch, Marley Glenn and Lindsey Tatum. Also to Joshua Dykes for being our preacher intern. They did a great job organizing and helping with campaigns, camps, washing buses, and gospel meeting activities. They are all headed back to high school and college. We wish them a great year.
