We Will R__________________. Revelation ___:___ & ___ Luke ___:___-___ The Gift of Life Life is a gift. This belief is fairly common. Nevertheless, not everyone views life as a gift. Some in our culture view their life as a personal entitlement, not as a gift. And ironically, many of these same individuals view some lives as not possessing a personal entitlement to life. These two incompatible views are held by many individuals in this country. But regard- less of what people believe, this leads us to the important question: Is life actually a gift? Is it more than just a belief? To determine objectively if life is a gift, let’s begin with this question: Can people do anything to cause, earn, or deserve their existence? The obvious answer is no. We enter this earth to a time we do not choose, to parents we do not select, and to circumstances over which we have no say in or control over. We begin our existence on earth without having done anything prior, and therefore, without causing or earning our existence. For most people, this is an undeniable fact. And this does mean, evidentially speaking, life is in fact not a personal entitlement. In order for it to be a personal entitlement, one would have to earn, deserve, or cause his own ex- istence. But simply proving that life is not a personal entitlement does not prove that life is a gift. Every gift has a giver, as we all know. Does life itself have a giver or givers? Regardless of what any person believes, the answer is yes. Even for those who do not believe in God, life is undeniably a gift. The atheist and agnostic must acknowledge these facts: 1. They did nothing to cause, earn, or deserve their existence. 2. Life was given to them at the very least by their parents – by the transference of life. 3. And the life that their parents possess was also something that they received and did not earn or cause. So even if one believes that the source of all life is nothing more than an inexplicable mystery or a mere accident, the reality of life being given and not caused or earned is undeniable. And since life is given, then it is indeed a gift by definition. This fact of reality has huge implica- tions. It means that no one is personally entitled to their existence, and everything that comes with it. And that no one has existential rights over their own life, or anyone else’s. And there- fore, no person or even institution has an existential right to eliminate any person’s life. But when we account for God’s existence, we see that life is something that God grants hu- manity, not an entitlement (Job 10:12). We can understand that all existing life continues to be in God’s hands, not our own (Job 12:10). And that even though we each possess a soul, God still retains absolute ownership of all human souls (Ezek. 18:4). Life is a gift. A gift that God has given us to use, but still retains absolute ownership over. God never once said to humanity that the gift of life involved a transfer of permanent ownership as opposed to being a temporary privilege we possess. And for this reason, we should never treat our lives or others’ lives as something that we own or have complete authority over. God grants life, rights, and authority. And all lives and people belong to Him. “The earth is the LORD’S, and all it contains, The world, and those who dwell in it” (Psalm 24:1). -Jeffrey Howell
