Practice makes perfect. This is a saying many have used to describe the process of training. There
is debate concerning this phrase. Does practice really make one perfect? One could say, “Perfect
practice makes perfect.” Practice most definitely makes one better, at the very least.
We are told in scripture, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not
depart from it” (Proverbs 20:6). This passage describes the importance of practice for our adoles-
cents. Children need to hone and fine tune their skills in order to develop and grow. What happens
when we are “grown?” The passage quoted suggests “we will not depart.” This could almost indi-
cate an easy ride, a cruise control to autopilot the straight and narrow. This is just not the case.
What will we “not depart” from? We will not depart from “it.” The training process in the way we
should go. We will not stop training! We will not stop practicing! We never graduate from the
school of life. Do not give in to the idea that we can coast through life without striving to train our-
selves on the way we should go. This outcome will be far from perfect. If we believe that the train-
ing from childhood is enough to keep one from departing, then what happens when one departs
who has been trained from childhood? It undermines the belief that they will not depart.
It challenges the wisdom of Solomon. It demoralizes the parents, grandparents or village that
trained the child in the first place.
We must train our children to know that they must continue to train. One way to do this is show
them that we as adults still need to learn. Help your child see that you take notes during the ser-
mon. Show them how to follow along. Maybe grab a song book and show your small child how to
follow the format of the songs (even if they cannot read yet). Be vulnerable. Be willing to show
that you are still learning, and they will strive to learn by default. They will be trained by your ex-
ample, not your words. You will succeed in the wisdom of Solomon that says,
“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old,he will not depart from
it” (Proverbs 20:6).
So, practice does not make perfect. “Perfect” indicates a state of completion, or being finished with
the process of practice. One day our practice will come to an end. One moment our final breath
will escape, and our practice will be made perfect.
“
Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own,
because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own.
But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on
toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus“ (Philippians 3:12-14).
We are so blessed to have Rob Whitacre here today to complete the seminar he began on Friday.
If you missed the Friday and Saturday seminar, we have recorded the seminar and we want to en-
courage you to go back to our Deerfoot COC YouTube channel and watch them, share them, book-
mark them to watch over and over. I want to encourage you to get the booklets and train to use
them.
Practice makes proficient.
