This was at a time when Israel had felt that God owed her something, but not trusting in God to help her she had gone into sin by making alliances with Egypt. Today it seems that we in America are experienc- ing the same thing. I hear people talking about the election and about what will happen to us regardless of who is elected. There has been talk on radio about the dangers of Isis attacks at some polling places in Washington D.C. or at the inauguration of the new president. There are some who speak of the fear of some major war breaking out. What we need to do is to remember that God is still in control of this world. God is still sovereign! In Isaiah’s time Babylon was the nation that ruled the world. They had conquered Israel and carried them into captivity. Everything looked bad for Israel but the people of God at that time needed to remem- ber that God will allow nations to do what they will but He will have the last word. Babylon was a great power but God was still in control. God was the originator of the na- tions (read Gen. 10, 11). God was and still is in control of everything. In the time following the return of Judah from Baby- lonian captivity the people had failed to rebuild the temple as God had commanded. Haggai was sent to encourage the people to carry out the work that God had given to them. In the second chapter Haggai reminds them of God’s sover- eignty. Haggai told the people, “And again the word of the LORD came to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of the month, saying, 21 "Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying: 'I will shake heaven and earth. 22 I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms; I will destroy the strength of the Gentile kingdoms. I will overthrow the chariots And those who ride in them; The horses and their riders shall come down, Every one by the sword of his brother. 23 'In that day,' says the LORD of hosts, 'I will take you, Zerubbabel My servant, the son of Sheal- tiel,' says the LORD, 'and will make you like a signet ring; for I have chosen you,' says the LORD of hosts." In this passage God reveals three important facts about His power. First, Haggai and the nation of Judah are reminded that God has power over nature. He “will shake heaven and earth.” Secondly, He has power over rulers He “will overthrow the throne of kingdoms.” Thirdly God re- minds them that He has power over the enemies of His peo- ple. He will over throw the chariots and those who ride in them; the horses and their riders shall come down.” In the book of Romans Paul reminds us that “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31). I remember reading of a painting that showed an elderly man holding the hand of a child as they stood in front of the smoldering ruins of their house. The caption shows the man saying to the boy, “Hush boy, God ain’t dead.” In times of troubles when we begin to wonder what is going to happen to us in a world gone mad we need to remember that God is still here, we are His people and he is still in control. God still has sovereignty over this world. -to be continued • “You are my God.
