Jesus Calms the Storm in His time
To be with Jesus in the middle of a horrible storm would be an incredible experience. I
like to think that I would be calm, with a full assurance of my safety. I like to think that I
could even sleep in the middle of an otherwise life-threatening experience. I am not left to
wonder how I probably would have responded, because wonder is just what Jesus’ apos-
tles experienced.
First, they wonder why Jesus is sleeping when a dangerous gale-force wind threatens their
lives.
“And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other
boats were with him. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the
boat, so that the boat was already filling. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion.
And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perish-
ing” (Mark 4:36-38)?
Second, they wonder how the once-raging sea calmed at His word.
“And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind
ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you
still no faith?” And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is
this, that even the wind and the sea obey him” (Mark 4:39-41)?
Third, I am sure they wondered why they faced the storm in the first place. After all, they
were with the son of God who just calmed the storm. Couldn’t he have calmed it before it
started? Jesus was testing them to help them remove their wonder.
If we were with Jesus, we would struggle with the same things they did. It’s easy for us to
think we would never be left in wonder. When we face the storm, the test will come. It’s
natural to wonder in the midst of it. Allow the test to remove your wonder, and rely on
Jesus.
Jesus calms the storm in His time.

The Unwearied Runner
Part Four
This is the fourth article dealing with the words of
Isaiah 40:30, 31 – “Even the youths shall faint and be
weary, And the young men shall utterly fall, 31 But
those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their
strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and
not faint.” In this last article we will notice the prophet
Isaiah’s statement that “they shall mount up with
wings as eagles” We know that the eagle by molting,
the strength and beauty of the eagle is renewed annu-
ally. Likewise the Christian will have the strength to ele-
vate our desires, to think God’s thoughts, to contemplate
heavenly things. In his letter to the brethren at Colossae
the apostle Paul said, “If ye then be risen with Christ,
seek those things which are above, where Christ sit-
teth on the right hand of God. 2 Set your affection
on things above, not on things on the earth” (Col.
3:1, 2). Those risen with Christ are those who have been
baptized into Christ and have also been raised to “walk
in newness of life” (Rom. 6:4). The things above that
we are to seek are contrasted with the things on earth.
This is a reference to spiritual things contrasted with car-
nal things. Thus we are to seek spiritual things rather
than carnal things.
There will be the strength to run for the prophet
says, “They shall run, and not be weary…” There
will be power for critical times, for special service. In I
Sam. 17:48 we read of the time when David went to bat-
tle Goliath. “And it came to pass, when the Philistine
arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that
David ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.”
David was willing to meet the challenge of this warrior
and while many would have fled, David found the
strength to run not from but to the battle.
When Jesus arose from the dead we are told
that “Mary Magdalene and the other Mary” had come to
see the tomb. An angel of the Lord told them to “go
quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from
the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into
Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.”
To go quickly is to run.
There is also provided the power to walk
for we are told, “They shall walk and not faint.” This is
the power of patient endurance, of steady perseverance,
to carry on life’s daily obligations. This is the most difficult
part of life’s program. A maid working in a motel was
asked how she liked her job. “Oh it’s alright except that
it’s so daily.” The daily grind is the thing that often wears
us out. But God provides us the strength we need to walk
and not faint.
