Standing On the Shoulders of Giants.
Last Thursday I got to spend some time with George and Mary Lou Shoemaker on
their back porch. George is a fighter who loves this congregation.
He has expressed a desire for calls and to receive visits. He wanted everyone to know
that both he and Mary Lou have had their vaccines and want to see you. They request
you call before you come.
As I was leaving, Mary Lou mentioned in passing that her grandfather was a pioneer
Gospel preacher. I did not know this, and I asked her to tell me his name. He was
James Wilson (J. W). Brents. I called my dad, and he knew him immediately. He had
just within the year written an entire article about him on his website therestoration-
movement.com. He provided the location of the grave marker and included pictures.
To say we were thrilled as I showed sister Shoemaker the article is an understatement.
This does not happen every day.
We are all indebted to those who have come before us. I learned a story about brother
Brents that affects me personally. If it wasn’t for J.W., my Alma Matter, Freed Harde-
man University (F.H.U.), surely would not be the school it is today.
The story goes that Brents was preaching a weeklong Gospel meeting and he reported
the meeting results in the Gospel advocate. He said it was a “good meeting” but there
was only one baptism. A 13-year-old boy named H.A. Dixon. This boy would grow up
to be a Gospel preacher himself, and later succeeded N.B. Hardeman as the president
of F.H.U. One decision to preach a Gospel meeting 1500 miles from his home changed
countless lives. Where would we be without the influences we have had in our faith?
Without J.W. Brents, we also would not have Mary Lou Shoemaker. Our congregation
has been blessed by the efforts of this same preacher. How blessed are we to be where
we are?
All this goes to show that no small action, when done for the Lord, is small in the
broad scheme of things. One meaningful interaction can change the lives of countless.
We really are standing on the shoulders of giants.

The shepherds of Deerfoot Church of Christ
To the congregation at Deerfoot Church of Christ, from your elders:
The Governor of Alabama, Kay Ivey, has decided not to extend the mask mandate that expired on
April 9th.
However, the elders of Deerfoot Church of Christ strongly suggest we continue wearing masks and
maintain 6-foot social distancing (6SFD) for a few more weeks. We anticipate returning to normal
services and gatherings on May 16th, if conditions continue to improve.
The reasons we think it necessary to continue with masks and 6FSD are:
1) When worshiping and in Bible classes we are sitting in enclosed spaces. The reporting on how
the virus spreads indicates this is the kind of environment that presents a heightened risk. We have
modified the HVAC systems with additional filtering which is more effective with a smaller audi-
ence and less restrictive air flow.
2) When worshiping we are singing which is one of the most likely sources of increased exposure.
3) When we are together, we have several persons who are in the “at risk” category in the audi-
ence. We need to protect them as best we can while allowing everyone that desires to worship to-
gether.
4) By mid-May, everyone who wants an inoculation should have it by then. The so called “herd
immunity” should be in effect.
For those worshiping from home, we will continue to live stream the services and adult Bible
classes on our website, YouTube channel and Facebook page. If you are sick, if your health is vul-
nerable, or if you’re concerned about your health as we meet together, please stay home. You will
be part of our worship assembly by viewing our live stream during services.
We will continue to provide individually packaged Lord’s Supper unleavened bread & fruit of the
vine at the back of the auditorium for you to pick up as you enter. Empty containers can be prop-
erly disposed at the building exits. At the end of service, appointed men will be taking up the col-
lection for the saints at the same auditorium doors.
Prior to and at the conclusion of the service, please fellowship outside, allowing for the 6FSD for
others to move freely through the pathways, hallways, and lobby.
We anticipate returning to the normal compliment of Bible classes and worship services on Sun-
day, May 16th, including Sunday night and Wednesday night, and streaming of those services will
continue.

to these guidelines, including 6FSD, to ensure each other’s well-being and in keeping with Romans
