Just as Pheidippides brought the good news of the Greeks victory over the Persians to the people in Athens, we Christians are commanded to carry the good news of salvation through Jesus to all the world. Yet today the church is located primarily in the south and especially in the states of Texas, Tennessee and Alabama. The church has seen a decline in membership and atten- dance here in the U.S and that includes the three states with the largest memberships. What can account for that? Has the gospel lost it power? Or have we lost our zeal for teaching the gospel, de- fending the gospel and promoting the gospel as the solution to the problems of this old world? Quite frankly the gospel is just as powerful as it has ever been (Rom. 1:16). It is the power of God to salvation to everyone that believes. But as Paul said, “How shall they believe in Him of who they have not heard, and how shall they hear without a preacher and how shall they preach unless they are sent?” (Rom. 10:14). We need to stop and ask ourselves the question, “Is it because the “we” that are com- manded to go have stopped going. We are to take the gospel into all the world. The gospel is the “good news.” The good news brought by Pheidippides to Athens was news of the defeat of Persia and thus the survival of Greece and her way of life. The good news brought by Isaiah was the release of Judah from Babylonian captivity and a return to their home- land. Our message of good news, the gospel is the good news of release from captivity to sin. According to Paul we are the slaves to that which we obey. He said in Romans 6:16 – “Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one's slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedi- ence leading to righteousness.” No slavery can compare to the evil of the slavery to sin. Among other things, sin brings shame. After Adam and Eve sinned in eating the forbidden fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil the text tells us “Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves to- gether and made themselves coverings” (Gen. 3:7). -to be continue Wee Folks Meets today @ 5 pm BIBLES FOR BELIZE We are in need of new Bibles for Belize.
