Hoover Church of Christ

Bus will leave at 4 PM
In 1969, Woodlawn Church of Christ sent Luther
Savage to then British Honduras. He was the first mis-
sionary to the country now called Belize. Quoting Luther
Savage, “when I went to Belize the Church of Christ was
not there”. Due to difficulties from the Belizean govern-
ment, diseases, etc., Luther Savage stayed about 1 year.
The day he was scheduled to return home, he baptized
Melvin Davis in May of 1970. He had no way of know-
ing the influence Brother Melvin would have establish-
ing the Church in Belize.
From 1979 to 1981, Melvin attended Preston Road
School of Preaching in Dallas, graduated and became the
minister in Belize City in 1981. The Church prospered in
Belize City under Melvin’s leadership and by campaigns
conducted by Woodlawn Church of Christ each year.
Young men from the Belize City church, matured in the
church and they in turn began establishing congregations
in areas around Belize City and throughout the country.
James Garay became minister in Hattieville, his son,
Jason Garay in Belmopan, Lincoln Jones in Burrell
Boom, Albert Longsworth in Ladyville & Crooked Tree,
Rayon Gordon in Dangriga & Silk Grass, and Ray Kelley
in San Pedro.
In 1983 Campaigns from Roebuck Parkway
Church of Christ continued in these established
Churches. On one of these campaigns, Brother Leroy
Owens baptized Cecil Gill who became the minister in
Independence and later his son, Kenyon Gill became the
minister in Punta Gorda. In 2004 during a campaign in
Independence, a young man named Clayton Guzman,
who was a member there, decided he wanted to become a
preacher. Roebuck Parkway sent him to preaching school
and after graduating, Clayton became the minister in
Corozal & Libertad. Today there are 10 preachers in 12
congregations throughout Belize that began in Belize
City along with Roebuck Parkway campaigns. David
Smith is currently the minister at Belize City Church of
Christ.
Deerfoot Church of Christ will be going to
Corozal on March 22 where the minster is David Diego.
Richard Diego, David’s brother is preaching at Libertad.
Libertad Church of Christ is only a few miles from Coro-
zal Town. We will be working both areas this year.
