A Changing Fire
Seasons change, but God does not.
Spring is just around the corner. Getting summer clothes out and putting winter
clothes away is naturally what one does. However, right now, we are experiencing
what some have called “the spring of deception.” We need space for both types of
garments. We need air conditioning at the ready and the fireplace stacked, ready for
heat. I call this a changing fire.
Jehoiakim (king of Judah) attempted to start a changing fire. Only the change he
sought to experience was not the weather, but rather, the word of God. He sat by the
fire, warming himself with strips of paper from a scroll.
“It was the ninth month, and the king was sitting in the winter house, and there was
a fire burning in the fire pot before him. As Jehudi read three or four columns, the
king would cut them off with a knife and throw them into the fire in the fire pot,
until the entire scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the fire pot” (Jeremiah
36:22-23).
The scroll that Jehoiakim turned into kindling was the word of the Lord (Jeremiah
36:1-2), ironically concerning the destruction of Judah by fire. God gave Jeremiah
the reason for this scroll:
“It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the disaster that I intend to do to
them, so that every one may turn from his evil way, and that I may forgive their
iniquity and their sin” (Jeremiah 36:3).
God did not desire to destroy them by fire. He desired that all of the people
would repent. He made that known in every strip of paper that Jehoiakim burned in
his changing fire. Yet, no matter how much he burned, those words were
unchanged. God’s word was not burned. It was simply hidden from God’s people.
Today we understand that a different fire is waiting for all who do not repent. We
understand that because of words like:
“But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire,
being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly” (2 Peter 3:7).
However, there are many who want to tear out this sentence and start the
changing fire. They would burn up the truth, and dispose of it in strips to present an
easy packaged message with no need for repentance.
May we never take the words of the Lord lightly, nor seek to be warmed by them
like Jehoiakim in our disobedience. We can be deceived by the changing of the
weather, but may we never be deceived by a changing fire for the Word.
Seasons change, but God does not.
