J__________ P___________ from the B____________ John ___:___-___ Mark ___:___-___ Matthew ___:___-___ John ___:___ 1 John ___:___ Am I Worthy? When we look back on our lives, it becomes clear: God has blessed us greatly and has carried us through our darkest times. When you think about how much God has blessed you and watched over you throughout your life, it is only natural to ask, “Am I worthy?” When Jacob reflected on his life, and how God had brought him through every difficulty, he said, “I am unworthy of all the lovingkindness and of all the faithfulness which You have shown to Your servant…” (Gen. 32:10). These feelings are obviously relatable, but are they true? Are we all truly unworthy? Do we earn worth or merit worth through our own faithfulness to God? Jesus directly answers the later question in Luke 17:7-10. He points out that servants who do as they are supposed to do, do not merit any special gratitude or privilege for simply doing their job. In application to His disciples, Jesus finished this point by saying, “So you too, when you do all the things which are commanded you, say, ‘We are unworthy slaves; we have done only that which we ought to have done’” (Lk. 7:10). So when we do as we are designed to do (Eph. 2:10) and commanded to do, we do nothing to merit worthiness of blessings, favor, or gratitude from God and Jesus. Does this mean that we are indeed unworthy?! Well, there is more to the story… God’s Word calls us to “walk in a manner worthy of the Lord” (Col. 1:10). When we do, God qualifies “us to share in the inheritance of the saints of light (Col. 1:12). When we do good and work in faith, God counts us as worthy (2 Thess. 1:5, 11). These Scriptures tell us clearly that God designates us as worthy when we chose to live in a worthy manner. You truly stand before God unworthy of anything, nor can you be worthy of anything by your own power. Your life, abilities, family, possessions, and all other things are unmerited blessings from God. But when you do as you are commanded to do and walk in a worthy manner, God Himself will declare by His own goodness and power, “You are worthy.” ~Jeffrey Howell
