Spring is just around the corner. But right now, we are experiencing what some have called “the spring of deception.” So, while it is still cold, I like to sit by the fire with a good book and a coffee mug. Seasons change, sometimes daily, but God does not. There was another fire that Jehoiakim (king of Judah) sat by, warming himself with strips of paper from a scroll. “It was the ninth month, and the king was sitting in the winter house, and there was a fire burning in the fire pot before him. As Jehudi read three or four columns, the king would cut them off with a knife and throw them into the fire in the fire pot, until the entire scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the fire pot” (Jeremiah 36:22-23). The scroll that Jehoiakim turned into kindling was the word of the Lord (Jeremiah 36:1- 2), ironically concerning the destruction of Judah by fire. God gave Jeremiah the reason for this scroll: “It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the disaster that I intend to do to them, so that every one may turn from his evil way, and that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin” (Jeremiah 36:3). God did not desire to destroy them by fire. He desired that all of the people would repent. Today we understand that fire is waiting for all who do not repent. This fire is unlike the fire that warms us in the season of cold. It is unlike the fire in Jehoiakim’s fire pot. It will consume those who disobey eternally. “But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly” (2 Peter 3:7). May we never take the words of the Lord lightly, nor seek to be warmed by them like Je- hoiakim in our disobedience. Don’t be deceived by the changing of the weather. Seasons change but God does not.
