Jesus – Prophet, Priest and King – Part 5
In God’s scheme of redemption we have seen how
important the prophets, priests and sacrifices were. But it is also
important for us to recognize the place of the king. This is impor-
tant primarily because Jesus, God’s prophet, our high priest and
the perfect sacrifice, is also our King. In the Old Testament the
king was the male ruler, usually hereditary, of a city, tribe or na-
tion.
The Hebrew word for king, melekh, may mean
“possessor, stressing physical strength, or counselor, decider,
stressing intellectual superiority. The prophet presented God’s
will to man, the priest made sacrifices to God for man and the
king was the one who would rule.
God was the Jews’ King! In Psalms 10:16 we read,
“The LORD is King forever and ever; The nations have per-
ished out of His land.” God is the King of glory. Psalms 24:7-
10 – “Lift up your heads, O you gates! And be lifted up, you
everlasting doors! And the King of glory shall come in. 8
Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty,
The LORD mighty in battle. 9 Lift up your heads, O you
gates! Lift up, you everlasting doors! And the King of glory
shall come in. 10 Who is this King of glory? The LORD of
hosts, He is the King of glory. Selah.” God is king of all the
earth. Psalms 47:7 – “For God is the King of all the earth;
Sing praises with understanding.”
Thus when the Jews asked for a king like the nations
around them and Samuel felt hurt, God told him, “Heed the
voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have
not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should
not reign over them” (I Sam. 8:7).
The three great kings, Saul, David and Solomon all had
their faults and were guilty of sin. Saul disobeyed the Lord’s
command when he failed to kill all of the Amalekites and all of
their animals. Solomon married many foreign women and later
built altars for them to worship their idols (I Kings 11:1-8).
David, better than Saul or Solomon (I Sam. 15:28; I Kings
11:4), was a man after God’s own heart (I Sam. 13:4). But David
sinned! He was guilty of lust (II Sam. 11:2); he committed adul-
tery (II Sam. 11:4); and he committed murder having Uriah put
to death in battle (II Sam. 11:14- 21).
In God’s scheme of redemption all of these offices
would be combined once more in one individual – His Son Je-
sus. Among the Gentile nations the king often had priestly duties
but in the Jewish monarchy these powers were kept separate.
As we have noticed before, Saul was not allowed to make sacri-
fices (I Sam. 13:8-14), and Uzziah was not allowed to burn in-
cense (II Chron. 26:16-21). The king was the political and mili-
tary leader. He was expected to help further the cause of relig-
ion, but he was not to act as a priest.
Jesus was prophesied to be a king! We see in Zecha-
riah 9:9 that God promised the Jewish people that their King
would come to them riding on an ass, and that this was fulfilled
in Jesus’ final entry into Jerusalem. In the New Testament Jesus
is presented as King. “And they began to accuse Him, saying,
"We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding
to pay taxes to Caesar, saying that He Himself is Christ, a
King” (Lk. 23:2, NKJV) We see this also in Jesus’ trial before
Pilate. For example in John’s account we are told, “From then
on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out say-
ing, "If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar's friend.
Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Cae-
sar." (NKJV) – “When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he
brought Jesus out and sat down in the judgment seat in a
place that is called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.
14 Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and
about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, "Behold your
King!" 15 But they cried out, "Away with Him, away with
Him! crucify Him!" Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your
King?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king but
Caesar!” (John 19:12-15).
