We Love the Souls of Everyone
“This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to
be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:3–4).
Because we love the souls of men and want them to go to heaven, we preach the gospel of
Jesus Christ. Paul knew this burden and said, “I am under obligation both to Greeks and to
barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish. So I am eager to preach the gospel to you
also who are in Rome. For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for sal-
vation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek” (Romans 1:14–16).
Because we love the souls of men, we are not afraid to speak out against sin. We know that
passions of the flesh “wage war against the soul” (1 Peter 2:11).
Because we love the souls of men, we preach the need to follow Jesus. Jesus is the way, the
truth, and the life. “No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).
Because we love the souls of men, we point people to what is best. The Lord Jesus came to
bring us an abundant life (John 10:10). His yoke is easy, and His burden is light (Matthew
11:28-30). He is the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace
(Isaiah 9:6). He is “our wisdom and our righteousness and sanctification and redemption” (1
Corinthians 1:30). We can do no better than to preach Jesus and Him crucified to every soul
in every place who will hear.

The Gap Between Knowing and Doing
– Part 2
We ended our last article with the question,
“Why does this gap exist?” There are a variety of
reasons for the gap. First, the gap exists because
some people are double-minded. James speaks of
such a person saying “A double minded man is
unstable in all his ways” (Js. 1:8). A double
minded person is one who is not fully committed to
Christ. As brother Guy N. Woods said, He is
“attempting to pay homage to two masters (Matthew
6:24).” As a result he is unstable. Paul was a man
who was fully committed to Christ. He wrote to the
churches of Galatia telling them, “I have been cru-
cified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but
Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live
in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who
loved me and gave Himself for me” (Gal 2:20).
Paul was not literally crucified with Jesus, but just
as Jesus was literally crucified and became dead to
the literal things of this world, so Paul figuratively
has been crucified that he might be dead to his old
life. Paul is dead to that life and he has gone over
to Christ’s side. Now Paul is alive to serving Christ.
Now as a Christian Paul was so fully commit-
ted to Christ that he was willing to die for Him. On
one occasion Paul was warned by Agabus, a
prophet of God, that if he went to Jerusalem he
would be bound and handed over to the Gentiles.
Hearing that, Paul’s companions begged him not to
go to Jerusalem but he replied to them saying,
“What mean ye to weep and to break mine
heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but
also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the
Lord Jesus” (Acts 21:13).
Secondly, the double minded man is one
whose mind is not set on things above. Again listen
to Paul’s words to the brethren at Colossae, “If
then you were raised with Christ, seek those
things which are above, where Christ is, sitting
at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on
things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For
you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in
God” (Col. 3:1-3). In commenting on these verses
William Barclay said, “Sometimes we say of a man,
‘Music is his life’ – ‘sport is his life’—He lives for his
work’…”For the Christian, Christ is his life. Jesus
Christ dominates his thoughts and fills his life.”
On one occasion Jesus rebuked Peter telling
him, ““Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stum-
bling block to Me; for you are not setting your
mind on God’s interests, but man’s.’”(Mt. 16:23).
