week seven discussion questions Discussion Question 1 ? Due Date: Day 2 [Main forum] ? Post your response to the following: Systems of equations can be solved by graphing or by using substitution or elimination. What are the pros and cons of each method? Which method do you like best? Why? What circumstances would cause you to use a different method? ? Consider responding to your classmates by indicating pros and cons they may not have considered or persuading them to see the value of the method you like best (if you chose different methods). Describe situations in which you might use their methods of solving. Each method has its place in mathematics. It depends on how you want to view the results. Substitution and elimination are used to solve a system of equations. They both get you to the destination, so to speak, but by going from different directions. Substitution and elimination are used to solve a system of equations. They both get you to the destination, so to speak, but by going from different directions. Like going downtown via two different streets. Graphing, on the other hand, let us see a trend in changes of one value with respect to changes in another. Graphing is best if you want to predict an outcome based, for example, on data or to see where two equations are equal. Graphing: equation 1: 14x+2y=20 Equation 2: 5x-y=8 First step is to get one of the variables to cancel out so leave the first equation alone put change the second in this problem so: 5x-y=8 becomes 2(5x-y=8) which equals 10x-2y=16 The next step is to subtract them like this: 14x+2y=20 10x-2y=16 The +2y and the -2y cancel out so the answer then would be 4x=4 which means 1=x Then you plug the answer 1 in for x into one of the equations to find y so: 5(1)-y=8 = http://uopexam.com/product/mat-116-week-7-discussion-questions/
