Doctor Without Borders Research Paper
Doctor Without Borders, which is also known as MГ©decins Sans FrontiГЁres (MSF), is a non–governmental organization. They help people
worldwide regardless of their race or religion and provide them with medical aids especially for those who are affected by war, natural disasters,
diseases, and other crisis. The organization was founded in 1997 by a small group of french doctors. The MFS organization is independent which mean
it limits the amount of fundings received from the government.
The goals of these doctors are, to always be their for those who are in need of medical help. Most of the MSF's projects are in conflict zones. In these
places people can't get the urgent health care that they need. This allows MSF to work in places other organizations

Financial Aid Case Study
Humanitarian rush to save the starving children, fleeing refugees, marginalized women, generally, to diminish crisis worldwide is often a
straightforward response which can cause bigger dilemmas. Financial aid can alter the self determination in the developing country; food donations are
likely to destroy the local economy making aid a permanent matter. It is likely that governments may use humanitarian relief to not intervene military.
The unknown level of corruption in certain developing countries may land the aid into the wrong hands. The lack of accurate and visible data available
worldwide may cause inconsistency in statistics which could cause issues in preventions later on. Lastly, the self interests of governments may interrupt

As straightforward as the above understanding of protection may seem, complications rise due to a number of variables. It is no surprise that the
attempt of many NGOs and international organizations to intervene through peacebuilding operations are failing in the public's opinion and are no
longer preventing conflict; on the contrary creating more complications within. According to the United States Census Bureau, only 34% of the
population has trust in the government on all of the organizations and their objectives. In the following paper, the analysis of US interventions
politically, socially and economically will be closely analyzed. The thesis will be divided into multiple parts. Part I will closely looks at specific
NGOs, what they are and their missions. Part II will look at the extent of NGO marketing and its audience. This will help the readers understand
what it is that attracts the prospective interns and employees to become part of bigger organizations. Part III of the paper will analyze the data
collected from individuals. The data will be closely analyzed and will not only give me insight on the day to day practices of NGOs but how it
impacts the individuals who are depended on such organizations. On the broader spectrum the methodology section will help answer the thesis
question. Section IV will reason out why there is an NGO failure on the publics' eyes by looking at world

Ebola Virus Disease Epidemic Summary
The airline restrictions harmed West Africa's already fragile government by hampering the flow of aid and trade. The "Analysis of the West African
Ebola Virus Disease Epidemic" shines a light on the need for reform in the Global Health System by emphasizing the failures of the government
officials and organizations. Unity opens many opportunities for a stronger government as Friedman and Gostin emphasized in their article. Friedman
and Gostin argue that the government failed to unity by saying "states imposed travel restrictions and quarantines contrary to the demands of WHO and
the United Nations (UN), hindering the response of aid and travel," but critics would argue that every state has their own security interest that are seen
as safety... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unity between all agencies and governments will allow for everyone's voice to be heard. Group compromise and discussion is possible when all
systems are working together for a common goal; such as, overcoming an epidemic. Forming a strong framework requires accountable leaders to work
constructively with other organizations as equal partners. When organizations unite, leaders are held responsible for their global practices, motivating
action rather than hesitation. Accountable leaders are essential in a strong government because they take action and motivate change. When a
government has weak leaders, actions are postponed and hesitation causes delays in funding, education, and volunteers. Civil groups, along with other
non–governmental organizations, need their opinions heard. Uniting together all forces, not only creates a stronger, trusting bond between countries,
but also creates an unstoppable fighting force against epidemics. In the article, Gostin and Friedman acknowledged the contributions a
non–governmental agency, MГ©decins Sans FrontiГ©res, made to help control the raging epidemic. A representative of MГ©decins Sans
FrontiГ©res said without accountable leaders "there is no one to take responsibility" which is what he claims to be a major issue in the Ebola crisis
(1904). Other government agencies; such as, Human Resources and the United

We Are Doctors Without Borders Essay
Verbatim, "We are Doctors Without Borders/MГ©decins Sans FrontiГЁres (MSF). We help people worldwide where the need is greatest, delivering
emergency medical aid to people affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters, or exclusion from health care." This goal is an astonishing one and with the
history and background of this organization, they are doing a phenomenal job at accomplishing it. The creators of this website have used logos, ethos,
and pathos to appeal to the viewer in a way to entice them to want to learn more about the organization, or better yet want to help in any way that they
can. When first opening the website, I noticed a chart of how the funding for the organization is utilized. A whopping 89% of the donations are used

"Medical aid where it is needed most. Independent. Neutral. Impartial." is the motto for MГ©decins Sans FrontiГЁres (MSF), also known as Doctors
Without Borders, found at the top on every page of the MSF website. MSF is a humanitarian organization focused on providing medi–cal relief and
projects worldwide. Through their amazing journey and help provided by MSF, it is possible to see why they are world–renowned.
MSF started out with a journalist from Tonus, a medical review, who wanted to create a group of doctors who could help people suffering worldwide
from major disasters. On Decem–ber 22nd in 1971, MSF was officially created which consisted of 300 volunteers, doctors, nurses, and other staff,
including the 13 founding doctors and journalists. These volunteers believed, "All people have the right to medical care..." Their first mission was in
1972 when an earth–quake struck Managua, Nicaragua. The first missions were not organized and lacked prepara–tion, support for doctors and
supplies were not arriving quickly. To put an end to these prob–lems they took a vote to become organized and less of a small independent group. The
people involved voted against the idea to stay a small independent group, so Bernard Kouchner, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For when emergency responses are needed, they have pre–packaged disaster kits that include a complete surgical theatre, an obstetrics kit, and an
inflatable hospital. After immediate emergencies pass MSF sometimes adapt to help the area long–term. Sometimes that includes providing day–to–day
healthcare, building or renovating health clinics, bringing in ambulances and/or helping with a treatment program. MSF has worked in some countries
for decades like in Malawi, where they have worked since 1986. In Malawi, MSF has helped with the preventing and treating of HIV/AIDs,
tuberculosis, hepatitis B and STIs in cities, towns, villages and even

Doctor Without Borders Research Paper

  • 1. Doctor Without Borders Research Paper Doctor Without Borders, which is also known as MГ©decins Sans FrontiГЁres (MSF), is a non–governmental organization. They help people worldwide regardless of their race or religion and provide them with medical aids especially for those who are affected by war, natural disasters, diseases, and other crisis. The organization was founded in 1997 by a small group of french doctors. The MFS organization is independent which mean it limits the amount of fundings received from the government. The goals of these doctors are, to always be their for those who are in need of medical help. Most of the MSF's projects are in conflict zones. In these places people can't get the urgent health care that they need. This allows MSF to work in places other organizations ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Financial Aid Case Study Humanitarian rush to save the starving children, fleeing refugees, marginalized women, generally, to diminish crisis worldwide is often a straightforward response which can cause bigger dilemmas. Financial aid can alter the self determination in the developing country; food donations are likely to destroy the local economy making aid a permanent matter. It is likely that governments may use humanitarian relief to not intervene military. The unknown level of corruption in certain developing countries may land the aid into the wrong hands. The lack of accurate and visible data available worldwide may cause inconsistency in statistics which could cause issues in preventions later on. Lastly, the self interests of governments may interrupt ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As straightforward as the above understanding of protection may seem, complications rise due to a number of variables. It is no surprise that the attempt of many NGOs and international organizations to intervene through peacebuilding operations are failing in the public's opinion and are no longer preventing conflict; on the contrary creating more complications within. According to the United States Census Bureau, only 34% of the population has trust in the government on all of the organizations and their objectives. In the following paper, the analysis of US interventions politically, socially and economically will be closely analyzed. The thesis will be divided into multiple parts. Part I will closely looks at specific NGOs, what they are and their missions. Part II will look at the extent of NGO marketing and its audience. This will help the readers understand what it is that attracts the prospective interns and employees to become part of bigger organizations. Part III of the paper will analyze the data collected from individuals. The data will be closely analyzed and will not only give me insight on the day to day practices of NGOs but how it impacts the individuals who are depended on such organizations. On the broader spectrum the methodology section will help answer the thesis question. Section IV will reason out why there is an NGO failure on the publics' eyes by looking at world ... • 3. Ebola Virus Disease Epidemic Summary The airline restrictions harmed West Africa's already fragile government by hampering the flow of aid and trade. The "Analysis of the West African Ebola Virus Disease Epidemic" shines a light on the need for reform in the Global Health System by emphasizing the failures of the government officials and organizations. Unity opens many opportunities for a stronger government as Friedman and Gostin emphasized in their article. Friedman and Gostin argue that the government failed to unity by saying "states imposed travel restrictions and quarantines contrary to the demands of WHO and the United Nations (UN), hindering the response of aid and travel," but critics would argue that every state has their own security interest that are seen as safety... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unity between all agencies and governments will allow for everyone's voice to be heard. Group compromise and discussion is possible when all systems are working together for a common goal; such as, overcoming an epidemic. Forming a strong framework requires accountable leaders to work constructively with other organizations as equal partners. When organizations unite, leaders are held responsible for their global practices, motivating action rather than hesitation. Accountable leaders are essential in a strong government because they take action and motivate change. When a government has weak leaders, actions are postponed and hesitation causes delays in funding, education, and volunteers. Civil groups, along with other non–governmental organizations, need their opinions heard. Uniting together all forces, not only creates a stronger, trusting bond between countries, but also creates an unstoppable fighting force against epidemics. In the article, Gostin and Friedman acknowledged the contributions a non–governmental agency, MГ©decins Sans FrontiГ©res, made to help control the raging epidemic. A representative of MГ©decins Sans FrontiГ©res said without accountable leaders "there is no one to take responsibility" which is what he claims to be a major issue in the Ebola crisis (1904). Impartial." is the motto for MГ©decins Sans FrontiГЁres (MSF), also known as Doctors Without Borders, found at the top on every page of the MSF website. MSF is a humanitarian organization focused on providing medi–cal relief and projects worldwide. Through their amazing journey and help provided by MSF, it is possible to see why they are world–renowned. MSF started out with a journalist from Tonus, a medical review, who wanted to create a group of doctors who could help people suffering worldwide from major disasters. On Decem–ber 22nd in 1971, MSF was officially created which consisted of 300 volunteers, doctors, nurses, and other staff, including the 13 founding doctors and journalists. These volunteers believed, "All people have the right to medical care..." Their first mission was in 1972 when an earth–quake struck Managua, Nicaragua. The first missions were not organized and lacked prepara–tion, support for doctors and supplies were not arriving quickly. To put an end to these prob–lems they took a vote to become organized and less of a small independent group. • 7. Pharmaceutical Companies Stand in the Way of Treatment Essay Pharmaceutical Companies Stand in the Way of Treatment Abstract This casebook concentrates on the negative effects that the pharmaceutical industry's trade and production policies have on third world nations suffering from disease epidemics. My position is that pharmaceutical companies are not concerned with the health benefits of their drugs, but rather with the market that their drugs generate. I illustrate this notion by describing the trade policies that pharmaceutical companies influence and the pharmaceutical companies' production policies which concentrate on producing life–style drugs rather than drugs that cure life–threatening diseases. Multinational pharmaceutical giants are occupied with producing drugs that yield the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But this is not necessarily true. Western governments are usually generous about funding drug industry research. These governments also allow the drug companies to market discoveries and new drugs that are produced in government and university laboratories. The most expensive aspect of producing a drug is the pre–clinical research, which is performed by the government and universities, not the drug companies. The Academic Search Premier on the Penrose Library website was the most useful research tool. Since this casebook topic covers an international concern that is current and at stasis, it was necessary to use current journal articles in attaining reliable and up to date information. The process of inquiry and acquiring information about this topic delineated the necessity of examining several different sources and being a critical reader. In analyzing different sources of information, it was crucial to note the validity and reliability of the source; many times it was useful to analyze both sides of an issue in order to gain a balanced understanding of the topic at issue. In 2001, the discovery of three letters containing anthrax spores caused widespread panic that swept across the US. Thousands of people flocked to clinics to be tested for possible infection and hundreds were affected by the shutdown of workplaces and public facilities. Though only a ... • 11. Medecins Frontieres Everyone deserves medical help whether they live in an emerging nation or in the heart of New York City. This is what Bernard Kouchner thought when he created Medecins Sans Frontieres, or Doctors Without Borders. Medecins Sans Frontieres goes to third world countries and helps deliver free medical aid to those in need. The amount of helpless people in third world countries shows that without the aid of Medecins Sans Frontieres citizens would be without the medical assistance that they deserve. The acts of Medecins Sans Frontieres results in the better being of others. This is demonstrated through their tireless efforts, resulting in less people at risk. While treating infected people Medecins Sans Frontieres takes readings, which are then sent off to a microscopy lab for microscopy quality control testing and then tested for anything pertaining to the medical issue at hand. "MSF uses the traditional protocol of reexamining 10% of negative slides and all positive slides..."(Klarkowski). Although this is not the most efficient method for examining illness this method delivers more data and doing so helps any Medecins Sans Frontieres team determine what is and isn't working with their treatments. This same approach was used for the mental health services department since March of 1998 in Bosnia. "Group interventions were prefered because of the secondary benefits of sharing and mutual support. MEdecins Sans Frontiers found that communities were generally supportive of each other. (Jong). While nearly 300 miles apart the same data was collected from differing victims. This method of testing multiple times is used everywhere but in a more advanced way with Medecins Sans Frontieres. As shown when a Medecins Sans Frontieres team stationed in Bosnia discovered that victims are more likely to talk in a group than alone. One reason for this is because men's competence is usually viewed as being more valuable compared to women's, even if they women may be doing better (European Commission, 2016). 2. Traditions, stereotypes & discrimination: To this day, the reason why the issue regarding thegender pay gap still exists is because employers typically presume that men are better at certain jobs or process certain skills which makes them more superior to women (European Commission,2016). • 14. The Birth Of Florence Nightingale, A Pioneer Of The Modern... May 12, 1820 marked the beginning of a revolutionary and exciting era of nursing characterized by the birth of Florence Nightingale, a pioneer of the modern nursing profession for her work as a nurse, educator, researcher, and an environmentalist in the nursing profession (Alligood, 2014). Nightingale developed a number of nursing theories regarding the environment and effective care for patients and refined her theories to focus on the health of houses, personal hygiene, and petty management (Alligood, 2014). These canons were crucial in the creation of a nursing era focused on health promotion and disease prevention. One preventable disease from Nightingale's time that is still prevalent today is cholera. Cholera is a condition characterized by diarrhea, vomiting, and leg cramps, resulting in severe dehydration or death due to the bacteria, vibro cholerae (Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, 2014). Cholera is spread through consumption of water or food that has been contaminated with fecal bacteria, and as such is preventable through education programs, improved access to clean water, and proper personal hygiene (World Health Organization, 2016). MГ©decins Sans FrontiГЁres uses these measures, in addition to the administration of oral vaccines, to prevent Cholera in South Sudanese refugees. It was during one of my first few days there, that I found myself guarding the sole entrance to my company's operating base. In order to achieve my goal, I must first obtain either an Associate's Degree in Nursing or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Even though the College of San Mateo offers an ADN program, I have chosen instead to pursue a bachelor's degree. While the career opportunities for those with an ADN and BSN are the same, a few factors have influenced my decision. First, the prerequisites for CSM's program and many four year programs are both extensive and very similar. That is to say, completion of the associate's program will be just as time consuming as the several bachelor degree options offered in the Bay Area. For example, the CSM and SFSU prerequisites will both take at least two years to complete, and the programs themselves are each an additional two years ("Nursing at College of San Mateo"; "Bachelor of Science in Nursing"). What happens when projects and interventions undertaken by international NGOs go wrong? Although my scholarly source understands most of these organizations do not seek to do harm, nonetheless harm occurs. This article by global development believes with a few legal and regulatory frameworks setting out how communities can hold NGOs to account, and with even less support fro communities to engage in such a process, there is a significant accountability deficit at the heart of international NGOs. Here we talk about accountability in regards to how NGOs answer to donors or to the national governments of countries in which they are operating. NGOs should account for the money they spend as contracted agents of donors. And they should, of course, be working within the parameters of national regulatory frameworks and laws (although the fact that NGOs themselves often sit on the committees that draw up such regulatory systems is troubling). When development interventions go wrong, or do not work the way they were intended, it is often no one's fault, due rather to events beyond any individual or organization's control. But people's lives are affected, sometimes (as when cholera sweeps through a refugee camp) with the most tragic of consequences (Global Development). Systems for recognizing the "rights" of beneficiaries and the obligations of agencies do exist. The Sphere Project, for example, sets out in great detail the minimum standards to be expected in, say, a refugee camp. But there are few legal frameworks capable of holding NGOs to account, or setting out in detail exactly when, where and how communities might be able to hold an organization accountable for an intervention that has gone disastrously wrong (Global Development). Unless NGOs and humanitarian agencies can be legally challenged and held to account, such principles and minimum standards do not do enough to establish real ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 19. The Situation Of Sub Saharan Migrant Women It is a tragic situation. Sub–Saharan migrant women in these circumstances are subject to additional abuse of their human rights. African women are often exploited. A majority of reports on migration into Morocco on to Europe involve trafficking of women (Anyadike, 2015). Many women seek financial security in the form of a sponsor, usually from a man who will accompany and support them. But this type of aid has negative effects, it "has caused a stressing issue that creates "debt bondage in which they must pay off – most commonly through sex work" (Anyadike, 2015). Article four of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights prohibits slavery, another unethical practice that Africans have resorted to is in direct violation of the human rights. Again, it is rooted in the weakness of the migrants. Most that participate in sex work have no other options. And those who perpetrate this exploitation have created an unbreakable cycle, forcing African women to be in "debt" for as long as they can draw it out for. This problem is not going away with the industry of sex trafficking well and live alive, even today; the issue is expanding. And solutions are hard to come by, especially when the parties involved are limited with incentives or resources to help. It seems that the Moroccan population is unlikely to work towards a solution to the human rights abuse of the foreigners. On the other end, the Africans in the unethical, poor state that they are in are helpless. But is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

International Organizations: MГ©decins Sans FrontiГЁres International organizations today are categorized by two things; either they are here to help us make the world a better place or prevent it from happening. And if so, what makes an international organization good and how can we prove this? A fine example of an international medical humanitarian organization is Doctors Without Borders, also known as MГ©decins Sans FrontiГЁres. This organization was created by a group of French doctors and journalists after looking at the aftermath of wars that were happening around them at the time. This organization was made to help those in need, to victims of natural or man–made disasters regardless of their race, religion, culture, creed or political beliefs. The area is known for overpopulation and destitute sanitation, which provides an ideal breeding ground for the Vibrio cholerae bacillus. In 2014, along with the native residents, more than 185,000 South Sudanese refugees have been vaccinated against cholera. It was Ethiopia's first–ever mass cholera immunization that also reached South Sudanese refugees. Since then, the MГ©decins Sans FrontiГЁres (MSF) have provided medical care, water and sanitation services, not just to the Ethiopian people, but also to the South Sudanese refugees in Pagak and Matar transit centres as well as in Letchuor, Kule and Tierkidi refugee camps and in Itang (MSF, 2014; Web). The purpose of this paper is to discussFlorence Nightingale 's ((1820–1910) theories in the context of the MSF cholera immunization program in Ethiopia's Gambella region, focusing on the links between the issues of health, water, sanitation, and prevention of communicable diseases. It is argued that the solution to the contemporary deadly relationships between microbial life, poor water and inadequate sanitation in developing countries is based on 1) the sound principle of hygiene/sanitation (i.e. environmental nursing promoted by its heroine Florence Nightingale), and 2) prevention strategies carried by the communal partnership between various national ... Specific Intervention Activities: When assessing what intervention activities would be the most help in addressing Haiti's health problem many underlying factors were considered. For a full list refer to Table 1 included in the Appendix. However, the critical factors targeted in this intervention come down to four focus areas. These priorities are: 1) provision of safe water and sanitation infrastructure, 2) carry out health education among community members, 3) fill critical healthcare gap, and 4) improve and increase epidemiological surveillance In a blog post written by Sokari Ekine, the Nigerian social justice activist explains that cholera is an illness "exacerbated by heavy rains; poor sanitation; and limited clean water and associated poor hygiene" (Ekine, 2013). These components factor largely into the chosen intervention activities. Haiti is an island that experiences significant flooding due to its location in the hurricane belt; this flooding makes access to safe water a major issue in a nation with flimsy infrastructure (World Health Organization, 2011). This program plans to restore and improve water and sanitation facilities for they are the main mode of transmission for the cholera bacterium. The corresponding poor hygiene that stems from lack of safe water and sanitation will be addressed in the health education provided for community members. If one accept that it is by fate a crisis happens and do not have any precautionary measures, then the crisis management is doomed to fail. This holds true when dealing with humanitarian aids after a disaster, whether man–made or of natural cause. It is then of utmost importance that all the actors in the humanitarian community knows their roles and get their acts together harmoniously. In the past, health care for mothers was almost nonexistent. In 2008, a little over fifty percent of women received some kind of health care assistance from a skilled worker. Ebola is only communicable through direct contact with bodily fluids after a person has begun to display symptoms, the first of which is often a fever ("Ethics and Ebola: Public Health Planning and Response", 14–15). However, even at the start of symptom expression, people are unlikely to transmit the disease; virion count is so low during the first couple days after the onset of fever that the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test for Ebola often returns false negatives during this period (Drazen 1). Thomas Eric Duncan, the first case of Ebola diagnosed on US soil, is a prime example of the virus's low transmission rate at the onset of symptoms. His family, whom he lived in close quarters with for several days while symptomatic, never contracted the disease, whereas the nurses caring for him towards the end of his life when his virion count was high, did.
