What is Islam? Islam means: “submission to the will of God.” Islam followers: Muslims Monotheistic 610 C.E. the prophet Muhammad received a revelation from the angel Gabriel  Muhammad recorded these revelations in the Qur’an  Qur’an writings describe God’s powers and expectations, Judgment Day, etc.

The Qur’an Muslims accept the Qur’an as the word of God Cannot be changed Includes commandments and parables Religious beliefs, religious duties, and good works are important elements of Islam Other literature:  hadith based on what Muhammad said and did  Shows Muslims how a Muslim should live and behave  Sharia Islamic law

Five Pillars Pillars of faith: duties that a Muslim must follow First- a person openly declare his or her faith Second- Muslims pray often to Allah (custom is 5 times a day) Third- charity Fourth- fasting (during daylight hours during month of Ramadan) Fifth- pilgrimage to Mecca hadj at least once
