EDF, Fives and the Institut de la réindustrialisation are all
engaged in industrial development, in France and in other
countries. Initiated by Fives and supported by the other
partners, this project seeks to better analyze industrial
trends through the creation of a monitoring tool which
tracks industrial investments in the “factories of the
future” on a worldwide basis. In 2016, a platform was
created to record industrial investments and to rank each
investment alongside six Factory of the Future criteria.
In this platform, R&D, logistics, energy and
manufacturing projects announced worldwide (greenfield
or brownfield industrial investment project over $5
million,) are tracked through 200 000 sources, on a daily
basis.
For each project that we include in the database, we
collect information about location, investor, amounts
invested, jobs created, surface area, production type and
capacity, customers, suppliers…
The information is structured in such a way that users can
instantly obtain statistics and trends according to
products, sectors, countries etc.
In this report, we offer our readers our analysis of the
most important trends as they appear from our data.

Towards the Industry of the Future
The aim of our project is to promote innovation within the
world industrial landscape, by tracking industrial investments
and analyzing their characteristics
Each project we detect is scored alongside six criteria defined
by Fives and EDF :
- Flexibility: the ability to switch from a product to
another, enabling made-to-order manufacturing,
- Digitalization: the introduction of technologies such as
IoT, robotics, automation,
- Energy efficiency: every measure taken to lower energy
consumption compared with usual norms,
- Social efforts: measures undertaken for employees,
through working conditions, health and safety concern,
training, education and wages…,
- Territorial efforts: decisions aiming at improving the
relations between a production site and local communities
and stakeholders, such as favoring local suppliers, funding
schools, contributing to local social projects…,
- Environmental efforts: reducing carbon footprint and
pollution, water preservation…
Each criterion is ranked 0 (no mention in the news describing
the investment), 1 (some measures described) or 2
(quantitative objectives defined for the criterion considered or
insistence on it). Adding those 0-2 scores over six criteria gives
a total Factory of the Future score which varies from 0 to 12.

The insights provided by our data are only interesting if
our data correctly reflects worldwide trends.
For a better appraisal of the accuracy of our data, some
points must be known:
- We proceed mainly through a screening of English,
French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and German
sources: adding other languages such as Chinese,
Japanese or Russian will improve, in the future, our
ability to detect medium-sized projects in China,
Japan, Russia and other countries (the largest
projects being covered by international sources);
- We are beginning this exercise and it is too soon to
correlate our data with official statistics. It is much
too early to comment evolutions over time, except
for massive facts and abrupt changes;
- Our qualitative analysis of the Factory of the
Future criteria rely upon the information provided
by the media. We do not contact companies in
order to check and complete the information
collected. We think that it is already interesting to
know what the media and companies think worthy
of communicating to the public: this does reflect
their preoccupations, theirs goals and their
commitment towards new industrial practices;

A real time tool
- We track announcements, and those
announcements are made some months or years
before production begins. Since we are tracking the
news on a continuous basis, we adjust the
information we have when, for instance, a planned
investment is canceled. From our experience with a
previous database about investment in France, we
think that the overall data reflects correctly the
general trends, even if some news are incomplete
or inaccurate.
Thus, we think that our real time tool, with all these
limitations, provide precious information about
industrial trends worldwide. To sum up, we are
confident that even if absolute measures are
underestimated because we cannot collect all the data
available - specially small and mid-sized capital
investments - proportions between countries and
sectors are correct.

Overview
We are capturing 7% of the world Gross fixed capital
formation (GFCF) in 2016-2017 (2018 numbers are not yet
published). GFCF does include expenditures that we do not
track: commercial and residential real estate, notably, but also
railroads, motorways. The representativity of our data varies
between countries and sectors, depending on our ability to
track information through web publications. The weight of
large investment projects helps tracking the most important
trends.
It is much too soon to comment on time trends at a
global scale, and we are still collecting data about
investments announced in the past years. We do think
however that some trends are already appearing in our
data at sectoral levels – see our case with the Electric
vehicle.

Agriculture is the most digitized sector (31% of
projects) because agricultural investments over $30 M
are more likely to be made by innovative companies.
Ynsect (France), for instance, will invest in a farm
growing worms, monitored, fed, warmed and so on by
sensors and other electronic apparatus.
The retail sector is here because of logistics:
warehouses tend to make a heavy use of sorting
machines, robots, laser tags, RFID…
In other sectors, such as paper or forest products,
digitization is incorporated in new machines.
Production is monitored in real time, samples are
tested systematically.
There are sectors such as mining industries where
digitization is less prevalent and no mining sector has
more than 5% of projects involving digital
technologies.

Flexibility
In the waste management industry, flexibility is being
able to treat different kinds of waste, be it solid or
liquid.
In pharmaceutical industries, our flexibility criteria is
exemplified by technologies in which medicine is
produced under various forms (capsules, gelatins,
pills…), or where quantities produced can be changed
quickly, or lastly by factories able to produce more
rapidly different versions of a vaccine.
Sometimes flexibility is just a way to offer a wider
selection to customers, in terms of colors, sizes and
shapes.

Energy efficiency
In the paper and cardboard sector, energy efficiency
measures consists often in reusing organic waste (wood
and paper) to produce energy. Some paper mills will be
able to sell energy produced in excess of their own needs.
In the IT sector, energy efficiency comes mainly from
reducing the energy consumption of data centers.
Sometimes we found very innovative processes, using
seawater, ice or snow to cool the servers that store the
growing amount of data.
In the energy sector, energy efficiency is maximised by
robots cleaning solar panels, in the solar industry, but also
by an increasing re-use of exhaust fumes and gases.
More factories are also powered by solar energy, or by use
of biomass-based fuels.
Finally, new technologies offer motors, turbines, kilns and
machines needing less energy than previous generation
models.

Environmental efforts
Environmental measures are sometimes required by law. In
India, for instance, industrial plants are required to come
with a « green belt »: trees must surround the facility within
a given perimeter.
Some coal mines will also use solar energy to power their
activities. Some of them will also make use of zero liquid
discharge systems: water used to wash production will not
be lost.
Various technologies are used to reduce carbon footprint
of new factories: use of LED’s for lighting, solar powered
engines replacing diesel, use of rainwater…

Territorial efforts
Territorial efforts target local communities.
There is probably a tendency to boast about territorial
efforts in countries where taxes are low and/or when
companies are operating in low-income local
communities. In many countries it is not expected
from companies to fund schools, churches or local
sport clubs, because those fundings are provided
through existing tax systems (standard deviation of
the territorial score is much lower between sectors
than between countries).
Local sourcing is one of the most frequently
mentioned territorial efforts, together with funding of
local services.
One company offers heat coming from its plant to
local farmers, for their greenhouses.

Social efforts
Social efforts are the least often mentioned by
companies among our six qualitative criteria.
The most frequent measure is to pay workers above
the average level of their industry.
There are, in some countries, measures aiming at
encouraging women to work: companies announce
specific efforts to reach a certain percentage of
female workers.
Some companies are aiming at increasing worker’s
safety and reduce painful working conditions.
One company distinguished itself by encouraging
hiring of veterans.
Finally, some companies communicate about perks
such as training, free education, health coverage,
leisure centers.

Our global map shows that average scores are
relatively low, even in countries with the highest
scores: out of a maximum score of 12, Denmark, the
country with the highest score, reaches an average of
2,2. It means that a lot of companies do not
communicate about their investments. Another point
is that scores vary more between countries than
between sectors: technologies seem to be less
important than local customs and regulations.
Finally, the map we obtain seems linked with GDP levels.
An interesting point is that when distinguishing between
domestic investment and FDI, domestic investments obtain a
Factory of the Future score that is 8% higher than foreign
investments (except for the territorial efforts criteria, which is
12% higher for foreign investments).

India has a better national average than China (0.89 vs 0.76). Some Indian or Chinese regions are on par with or even
better than European countries. The best Chinese region, Hunan, obtains the same score than Germany (with only 15
investments however). The best Indian region, Punjab, would come in third place between European countries.

There is a clear advantage for northern
countries in Europe. Denmark, Austria and
Finland obtain the top 3 factory of the
future scores. Italy obtains a better score
than France and the United Kingdom. The
Swiss score is surprisingly low but it comes
from the fact that one third of investments
projects there are from small biotech
companies which did not communicate at
length about their projects.

Europe (detailed)
Factory of the future scores by country varies in Europe from 0.39 to 2.19. Other indicators are surprisingly different: 100% of
investments projects in Czechia come from foreign investors, whereas this share is only 48% of investment projects in Austria
(European average is 73%). Another way of analysing investment dynamics is to consider the nationality of the company:
German companies invest in their own country only in 17% of their investments (European average is 32%).

The electric vehicle
We divided investments in three groups for the automotive industry:
- fossil and unspecified: fossil fuel powered cars and buses, and investments where the
nature of the energy used is not determined (tires, parts);
- Transitioning: hybrid cars and mixed plants producing fossil, hybrid and EV
simultaneously;
- Electric Vehicle (EV): fuel cell and battery powered electric vehicles
To analyse the automotive industry we have added to the automotive sector (917 projects)
other investment by suppliers of the automotive industry (488 projects). We only kept
investments exclusively made for the automotive industry (plastics, metal, tires, batteries...)

Indian software major Wipro has set up a new automotive engineering centre in Detroit
(United States).
South Korea's LG Electronics has set up a new R&D centre in Coventry, West Midlands
(UK), for automotive components and batteries.
Uber Technologies is setting up a new autonomous vehicle research centre in Wixom,
Michigan (United States).
Google's subsidiary Waymo, is planning to invest nearly 14 MUSD to set up a new self-
driving car facility in Michigan (United States), which could create 400 jobs.
As the automotive industry is moving towards a more intensive use of electronics, big players
from the electronics industry are increasing their presence in the automotive markets.

Japanese automaker Toyota Motor is going to invest
238 MUSD to increase vehicle production capacity at
its plant in Georgetown, Kentucky (United States).
The plant also builds Camry, Camry Hybrid, Avalon, Avalon
Hybrid, and Lexus ES models with an annual capacity of 550 000
vehicles. The RAV4 production does not signal a shift away from
sedan production at the plant, company executives said.
Instead, it reflects the company’s plan to build multiple vehicles
at its plants to better insulate each facility from downturns in
market cycles.

The company has been opening a series of R&D centres, each of which it

Seawater cooled data center
U.S. tech giant Microsoft has set up a new underwater
data centre ("Northern Isles") off the coast of Orkney,
Scotland (United Kingdom).
The data centre is powered by renewable energy sources. Also, as a
submerged data centre can be cooled by seawater, it does not need
mechanical chillers, which are some of the biggest consumers of
energy in a traditional data centre.
The company uses artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor the servers
and other equipment for signs of failure and to seek to identify any
correlations between environment and server longevity.
The company is also exploring using underwater data centres as
artificial reefs, which can be used to promote marine wildlife.

Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing Institute is
setting up a new R&D centre for advanced
manufacturing in Pittsburgh
The facility will house research, development, and office space for
the nonprofit Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing Institute.
The institute is an independent non-profit entity and was launched
with a grant from the U.S. Defense Department and various partner
organisations.
Its aim is to help bring manufacturing back to the U.S. and get small
companies to embrace manufacturing. It focuses on critical growth

Big data on big scale
South Korea's Hyundai Motor Group has set up a new
centre to process and analyse big data near
Guiyang, Guizhou (China).
The facility will serve as the foundation for the company’s "Car
Cloud", focused on the Chinese market – the largest automotive
market in the world. It will be used to process massive volumes of
data collected from the company’s fleet of connected cars. It will be
able to monitor customer driving patterns, diagnose potential
problems, and offer vehicle software updates. The company has
also signed an MoU with China United Network Communications
Group (China Unicom) to co-develop a predictive analytics
platform.

Leapfrogging: high tech for catching up with
advanced countries
Swiss-based Afrotech, in collaboration with other Swiss,
British, African and U.S. universities, NGOs and businesses, is
planning to set up a new drone port ("a Red Line") near
Cyangugu (Rwanda).
Afrotech seeks to pioneer high intensity cargo drone routes in the lower
sky in Africa and other emerging economies, thereby improving health
and economic outcomes. Transport drones could be used in the future to
supply remote areas. A network of airports is to be set up in Rwanda. It
defines a Red Line as a cargo drone route for medical and emergency use,
often in remote locations. A Blue Line is a commercial cargo drone route,
often in and around cities. The proposal – by architecture firm Foster +
Partners, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne and its
linked Afrotech initiative– hopes to see drones with a three-metre (10-
foot) wingspan able to carry deliveries weighing 10kg.

Less parts, and not only for EV
The Government of Germany, along with several state

companies, is initially investing 98 MUSD in a new
innovative car body plant at Wolfsburg (Germany).
As an example, an automotive body-in-white, which is made of 200
to 300 individual components and various materials today, could be
manufactured from 20 to 30 hybrid components in the future. This
not only saves material but also reduces production time.

Japanese company Daido Electronics, a unit of Daido
Steel, plans to set up a new high-performance
neodymium magnets plant in the United States in
three years.
Daido Steel, with Daido Electronics, and Honda Motor became the
world’s first companies to achieve practical application of a hot
deformed neodymium magnet containing no heavy rare earth and
yet with high heat resistance properties and high magnetic
performance required for the use in the driving motor of a hybrid
vehicle.

German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI)
has recently opened the competence center Smart
Agriculture Technologies (CC-SaAT) at Osnabrück
(Germany) to develop and apply innovative artificial
intelligence technologies in the field of agriculture.
The focus of the centre is in particular networking and communication
technologies, autonomous control and robotics, as well as georeferenced
Smart Services, automated Big Data analysis, and Deep Learning. The
area of application considers agriculture in a broad sense and covers a
wide range of topics, including arable and livestock farming, horticulture,
forestry, viticulture, and fishery. Project stakeholders include Google,
SAP, Microsoft, Intel, Airbus, Volkswagen, and BMW.
It will perform national and European research projects as well as direct
contract work for industrial customers.

Sanmina is going to mass-produce E4 robots, used to
clean solar cells, for Israeli company Ecoppia using
Eccopia's technology in a new plant near Chennai
(India).
"Ecoppia's technology can clean an entire solar site in just a few

seen demand grow across the board in 2015 - but India remains our
top market and the natural choice for us to build a state-of-the-art

This project, which has been awarded 7.8 M€ by the “Programme Investissement
d’Avenir” (PIA), aims to develop, during 5 years, innovative courses leading to

Manufacturing, Predictive Maintenance…);

apprentices… are expected to enroll in these courses. Special actions will be undertaken to

The Institut de la réindustrialisation has been created in 2015 by two engineering schools, EPF and
CESI, and two professional associations: GIM and Syntec Ingenierie. The Institut aims at producing

farm in Hamilton, Ohio
The site will be the first fully automated indoor farm in the U.S. It will feature robotics, artificial

optimize every aspect of growing produce indoors. The company CEO says that the company uses
"renewable energy, very little water and no pesticides". The company uses energy-efficient LED lights

A new paper machine incorporates cutting-edge production technologies capable of manufacturing

Hasrat Meranti has invested 16 MUSD to upgrade its industrial paper bags
manufacturing facility in Tapah, Perak (Malaysia).
The project will raise the company’s annual production capacity by more than 50% to 230 million
paper bags from 150 million currently. The investment consists of 5 MUSD for plant modernisation
and 11 MUSD for machinery and equipment. The company has introduced a state-of-the-art

converting plant in Circleville, Ohio (United States)
The plant is one of the company's most technologically and environmentally advanced tissue paper

Swiss-Swedish company ABB is going to invest 150 MUSD to set up a new state-of-
the-art plant for production of industrial robots in Kangqiao, Shanghai
The company announces it will be the world's most "advanced, automated, and flexible robotics
factory". Using a new, global design approach that the company announced earlier this year, the
factory will be able to dramatically increase both the breadth (type of robots) and depth (variants of
each type) of robots that can be made on-site, allowing greater and faster customisation to meet the
needs of customers.
Amada Holdings is investing 98 MUSD in a new machine tool factory with a fully
automated mold manufacturing system at Toki (Japan)
Amada stands to become the first to create an unmanned production line in this field: 42 robots, made
by Japanese companies Yaskawa Electric and Fanuc, will carry parts from one station on the line to
another. Quality checks will be performed with something called an image measurement system. The
plant will also connect with customers over the Internet. Advanced systems developed by Hitachi and
Fujitsu will allow online orders to automatically trigger production. The combination of networking
and automated production should cut delivery times from six to seven days to about three.

Klabin will open a pulp and flake mill in Ortigueira (Brazil) that can produce 1.5
million tons of pulp per year and will integrate its own electricity production (270
MWh capacity), investing USD 2.3 billion.
The new plant’s power system will allow the mill to generate excess electricity for sale back into the
grid. The mill will be self-sufficient in electrical power, generating 270MWh of energy. Of this total,
120MWh will be used for its own consumption and a surplus of around 150MWh - enough energy to
supply a city of half a million inhabitants - will be delivered to the market. All the energy produced by
Klabin will be clean, coming from renewable sources, without burning fossil fuels.
Georgia-Pacific is investing 438 MUSD in its Brewton (United States) paperboard
mill so as to upgrade it as well as to make it highly energy-efficient.
The mill now has the ability to generate its own energy using natural gas and biofuel residuals from
the paper-making process, also improving the mill's reliability and energy efficiency.
Japanese paper maker Paper Australia is planning to invest 423 MUSD to set up a
new captive waste-to-energy facility at Maryvale, Victoria (Australia)
The company says its project would save 650 000 tonnes of waste from going to landfill each year,
achieve a net reduction of 543 000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year (CO2 emissions
avoided), and generate 1 600 full-time jobs in the construction phase and more than 440 direct and
indirect jobs when the incinerator is operating. Most of Melbourne's waste currently goes to large
landfill sites in the outer west and north. The company will be using best available techniques in
emissions control to comply with stringent European IED limits.

Paper: waste to power production

Chinese-British company Global Switch is investing 225 MUSD to set up a new data
centre ("Sydney East") near Sydney, New South Wales (Australia).
The centre is designed for high power density systems with a target annual rating for power usage effectiveness
(PUE) of 1.35. The facility incorporates a number of environmental design features, including free cooling,
reconfigurable power, and cooling distribution. A green roof has been installed to provide thermal protection
and to cut solar glare. The company is seeking a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)
Gold rating.
Kyocera Communication Systems is going to set up a new snow-cooled data centre in
Ishikari, Hokkaido
The facility will be powered only by renewable energy. A private power line will be used to connect 2 MW
solar and 2 MW wind power plants installed by the company itself and a nearby biomass power plant that has
a partnership with the company. Electricity will be stably supplied by using an artificial intelligence (AI)-based

Kingston (Jamaica) to be powered by LNG as fuel.

It is the first facility in the world to generate energy from the urban waste that has gone through five different

Dubai Municipality has set up a new hazardous liquid waste treatment plant ("Jebel Ali Hazardous Waste
Treatment Plant") at Jebel Ali, Dubai (United Arab Emirates).
With the ability to handle the variation in flow and load, the centre also provides tertiary treatment using reverse
osmosis (RO) system, enabling Dubai Municipality to reuse almost 75% of the treated wastewater for irrigation.
Veolia Water Technologies implemented the project for the municipality. The reject water from RO is sent to
evaporation ponds to evaporate the wastewater, which makes the plant "zero liquid discharge".
China Everbright Greentech is going to invest 45 MUSD to set up a new integrated biomass and
household waste-to-energy plant in Lintao County, Gansu (China).

Ireland's Smurfit Kappa Group has set up a new combined heat and power plant at its paper mill in Snodland, Kent
(United Kingdom).
The new combined heat and power plant (CHP), which provides steam and electricity for the mill's paper machine, will slash
the mill’s carbon footprint by at least 15%.
Singaporean company Horizon Pulp and Paper has invested 27 MUSD to set up a new biomass-fired combined
heat and power plant at its pulp and paper mill in Kehra, Harju (Estonia).
With the new CHP plant, more than 80% of the energy used by the pulp and paper mill is now produced from renewable
sources. Due to the CHP and other environmental investments, the mill's carbon footprint is reduced by 70% from the 2010
level.
Finnish company Metsä Board has upgraded its Husum pulp and board mill in Örnsköldsvik, Västernorrland
(Sweden).
The company placed an order with Clean Combustion for the supply of a 50 MW single-fuel lime kiln burner and
associated control systems. The mill is an integrated board and pulp mill producing fresh fibre folding boxboard, white
kraftliner, as well as bleached market pulp. The investment is part of the company’s long-term strategy to reduce
environmental emissions (NOx and CO) and to ensure continued environmentally friendly production at the plant. The
complete burner system ensures efficient production with reduced environmental impact at a lower production cost.

40 MUSD in an effluent treatment plant to boost production efficiency at its upcoming brewery Kisumu plant
(Kenya).
Once a third phase under construction is completed, the modern brewery will be able to reuse nearly 90% of the almost 2
million litres of effluent water. Additionally, Naphtali Ndungu, the head of brewery and quality, highlighted that the plant will
also ensure harvesting of carbon from the beer fermentation process in a bid to reduce the factory’s carbon footprint by
around nine tonnes daily. According to Jacob Bett, the head of engineering and packaging, the water treatment plant will
integrate high-efficiency multistage technologies focused on reduction of effluent’s carbon oxygen demand (cod) and
biochemical oxygen demand (bod).
Manufacturer and producer of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, Kasapreko Company Limited, has just
completed the construction of a solar plant on the roof of its factory in Accra (Ghana).
The solar plant will supply 570,570 kWh annually to support the needs of the bottling facility and help displace the power
supplied by diesel generators at the height of the day. Solar will also allow Kasapreko to reduce its carbon emissions by over
4,600 tonnes over the lifespan of the plant.
Liquor maker Oasis Distilleries is planning to invest 12 MUSD to increase capacity at its grain-based distillery at
Borali, near Badnawar, Madhya Pradesh (India).
The project will generate its own power by setting up a 3 MW captive cogeneration power unit. As per national norms, the
plant will operate on zero liquid discharge concept. The company has been asked to install LED lights, to source at least 10%
to 20% of its energy requirements from renewable sources of energy, and to harvest rainwater.
Belgium's Anheuser-Busch is setting up a huge, new, state-of-the-art brewery near Putian, Fujian (China).
The brewery will also make use of solar power panels that will ultimately reduce emissions equal to the environmental impact
of 780 000 trees, according to the company. The amount of water and heat usage at the required for brewing will also be
reduced through the use of more sustainable processes. The company will also be responsible for the management and
